Hello Pricescope team,
Hope you’re doing well.

I am looking at this spinel currently and pondering if buying it or not.
Unheated Burmese, 2.22 carat. Seller asks for $3k, probably 10% negotiable.

What do you think ? I like that it’s very saturated and red. Would we say vivid red or red ?
I don’t like the cut and there is a small inclusion on the crown that I could do without but this one’s still ok.

Actually I’m thinking about it as a good candidate for a recut, what do you think ? Is the price fair enough to add a recut cost on it ?
I’ve seen recommendation of Ramon Tesoro here, I might check with him what we can do.

My other concern is do you think it will black out in low lighting ? I know spinels can do that.

Thanks for your input.
H

The link you posted doesn't go anywhere

Hello,
It seems that all Imgur links posted are flagged for approval as I got messages pending for a few days now.

Let’s try this roundabout to see if it works better like that, can you please copy and paste the link without the added spaces ?

It looks like a good stone and a good price to me. I probably wouldn’t mess with re-cutting it.

They do seem to be some extinction issues between 3 o’clock and 6 o’clock. If that’s the case, there may be a portion of the pavilion that is cut below critical angle and there won’t be enough meat to fix that.

The rest of the pavilion looks OK when he spins it, but that part is not clear. That may not be an accident.

Do you know the dimensions?

Thanks for your input, you got a great eye.
Dimensions are 7.98 x 6.96 x 5.42 mm

There’s a GGI (pakistani lab) certificate with it that states Red not Vivid red so maybe it doesn’t perform as well in real life than in those videos

Thank you for the link, @Dr_Diesel! OP, if the stone looks anything like the videos in real life, she's a beauty. Nice fluorescence and great price!! Of course, that's the damnable misery of it... we never know if the media we're provided is actually representative of the stone. So if you decide to buy, just be sure to have a generous return/refund policy in place. Good luck!

I've never heard of that lab, but not all of them use qualifiers when describing color. For instance, the GIA would also only use the shade descriptor "red" regardless of saturation level. So that wouldn't be an indication to me, unless I knew that lab often certified spinel as being "vivid."

I say 3k is 1k+ too much for this guy. Clarity to bad and cut is ok/good but over it comes very good and excellent. Buy a samller one with better cut and clarity, than you will have more worth and fun with the stone

Maybe I'm blind, but I see no price, carat weight or dimensions on this stone. Not even the seller. All I see is, "Unheated Red Burmese Spinel H 05022025." But apparently others do see more. Maybe I must be a member?

I've also never heard of "Imgur."

I would stay far away, who knows if it is synthetic or not???

If real, looks to be a nice stone but I would not chance it at all.

Buy from an established dealer.

Indeed.

That is a very significant oversight that you might want to correct swiftly, especially considering how widely used imgur is on PS.

I was speaking of the link itself, I did see what other's here wrote. I seen nothing for a seller, description, carat weight, dimensions and price. When I see no information on a stone's sales listing, I tend to be very skeptical, and as I wrote earlier, maybe it is because I’m not a member of Imgur, as I seen a sign in/sign up on that page.

I also don't know of Imgur, why would I?

Pricescope users may go there frequently and that is fine, I never have, why would I? I just comment from time to time here and visit Pricescope less and less. If I wanted to buy a stone or stones, I would go to my old suppliers, not a Pinterest looking website like this.

My comment earlier still stands. I would not buy from them.

The Stone has very very big inclusions, dont buy it. Looks a little bit like a glass filled ruby.
Do you want red as the main color and Spinel as Gemstone?
Do you collect gemstones or do you wanna wear it in a ring?
U live in the US?

Hello,
Hope you are doing well and wish a good start of the week

Just to clarify, Imgur is a website to share images and videos and I am the one who uploaded those on Imgur
Seller is OK and the stone is certified so it mitigates the risk of synthetic

In any case, I live in Singapore and will be recertifying it by NGI - if it fails I will return it

I collect them and set most of them in jewellery

I see a light inclusion in the crown facet but that’s about it

I see. I did not know you uploaded the videos. I thought it was a sales listing without a description as you asked people for their opinions, so I was suspicious. I've seen enough of them before without a single word, LOL!

Thank you for explaining this to me as I had no idea and no idea what Imgur is. I never used sites like these when I sold gemstones, hence my ignorance.

Looks like a beautiful Spinel.

I hope it all works out for you.

:)

The violet/purple part on the front and backside, the color is made from inclusions on front and backside i think.

I am a bit surprised by your initial comment on the inclusions. May I ask what makes you think there are big inclusions, especially give the low resolution of the videos and pictures?

I am just curious, because I don’t see any inclusion that bothers me particularly, but it’s a matter of tolerance of course.

Thank you in advance :)

When u zooming frontside/left u can see that the inclusion strang came out of the stone. On the backside the b/v color goes down do the bottom.
The inclusions create's the bluish violet color. The stone looks more like a very strong heated or glass filled Ruby as a Spinel.

Here are pics. The square is where the inclusion came out of the stone on the frontside.

It's just an app for uploading videos that can be easily shared, nothing more. It's not a website or app for buying/selling. Hope that clarifies.

I had a similar thought about the way it handles light. The reflections do not look like they typical crisp, defined flashes spinel is known for. It returns light in a way that looks more like corundum. If that is the case, I agree the inclusion you pointed out could represent glass infilling.

Thank you, I see it now. I agree, that’s a pretty significant one, and indeed the play of light is odd. But maybe it’s just the resolution of the video and light used? I don’t know, you can’t trust your eyes on the internet.

Many thanks :)

This image above. The two inclusions that looks like to be two feather inclusions at the top of the stone that are not circled. These look fairly substantial. I see them in the video very easily and would think they could be seen with the naked eye. These would be a deal breaker for me, especially with their proximity to the girdle. Not saying the stone would break if set but not saying it won’t. It all depends on the experience of the bench jeweler.

I should have looked at the video more closely instead of glancing at it, as these two inclusions pop right out at me and say, hello!

I take back what I wrote above. Looking at what I thought was feather inclusions are not. R Fisher, you are right. These are tweezer reflections. I looked at the video even more carefully and seen them move and fluctuate with the stone as it was cradled back and forth. I also seen the bottom of the stone, same thing. I must say it must be the resolution of the video because normally tweezer reflections are more defined, while these reflections are muddled from resolution.

My bad.

That’s actually what I like about this spinel, it behaves kind of like a ruby

Anyways, thanks for your valuable input everybody. I ended up not taking it, we didn’t agree on the price.

The hunt continues !
