Looking at all the beautiful gems and colors, one thing strikes me, how very poor and blah many of the cuts are. It seems that so many stones have these very asymmetrical deep ovalish cuts.

Can these stones be recut? How does one go about finding a cutter who can give something more unique?

What cuts/cutters do you like? The attached picture is from faceters.com. and Gram Faceting. Gorgeous, huh?

If you go to agta and peruse the spectrum award winners, you can get names of extraordinarily gifted cutters. If you like concave faceting, concavegems.com has great eye-candy and Richard Homer is the cutter. There are many more but the caffeine hasn''t kicked in yet and my brain is only up to 20% function.

Great sources for fantasy gem cuting are the websites of the annual AGTA Spectrum Awards (link)

and GANA (the organization of Gem carvers of North America).

Some random addresses I use to browse:

faceters.com - finished pieces and several dozens of cut designs explained

No, unfortunately I never got to see this one in real life. I did by Will Cox''s entry that year. It was the sunstone shell carving I posted awhile ago. I also own this carving by Sherris Cotter Shank. It is a 500ct Sweet Home Mine Rhodochrosite.
