Hi,
We''re planning on doing a unity candle ceremony. Someone said to me that the mother''s are supposed to light the two separate candles after walking down the aisle and before being seated. Is this correct? Then we light the big candle during the ceremony?
Just wondering...
Has anyone had this in their ceremony? How was it? Any advice?

Also, did you buy a unity candle set? My thought was just to use regular candles vs buying a set b/c the sets seem expensive to me. I guess I just need candle holders for each candle and that should be it.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I just did a very quick search on the Knot and typed in "unity candle" in that search box in the upper right corner. The second hit seems to answer your questions pretty fully :) I''d link it right here but not sure on the policy of that.

As far as your question about purchasing a set, I''d say this was one DIY project that is 1)SO cheap, 2)requires VERY little research, 3)can be done ahead of time (no freezing at different intervals OR bucket of water standing nearby needed

) and is 4)easy easy easy. (I say all these things tongue in cheek because by now I feel I "know" how you and I are with our DIY projects!!!

I''d go look at them at Micheals, JoAnns, wherever, and look at what is on them and aim to emulate the one you like best. Get the candles (with a coupon of course) and buy some inexpensive brads or crystals or whatever you like and stick the buggers in the candle (or glue them w/hot glue gun). Done. For probably less than $5.

(I''m on my high horse now because I just DIY''d a beautiful memorial candle that sells for $45 freakin'' dollars for........oh...........$2?

Oh, I meant to ask if you''ve read anything about the sand ceremony as an alternative? I am looking into this as our outdoor spot doesn''t allow open flames and I don''t want to worry about buying hurricaines to cover the candles etc. I also thought it was a neat idea to have the mixed sand colors in a pretty vase to be able to look at and have forever, while not missing out on the ceremonial aspect at the wedding.

I haven''t dug into this idea fully yet myself because either way we''d have to rent another table and some linen on which to do either (bleh) but thought I''d put it out there in case you hadn''t thought of it and wanted to consider it

This is exactly what happened for us. We also had the bestman/groomsmen light the mother''s candlrd prior to the ceremony. We bough a unity set, but the church also offered using their candles as an option. I see no reason to specifically get a set unless you want one.

So Happy, thanks! I''ll have to read the stuff on the ceremony. I know I read something awhile back but clearly can''t remember it!

That made me laugh! Yes, I am thrilled w/the simpler DIY projects. This does sound like a pefect project! I just have to find a set that I like and go from there. What are brads? Congrats on your candle! Any pics??
I read a bit about the sand ceremony but my FI wants the unity candle so I didn''t look too much into it. I liked it though b/c it''s something you can keep as a little something from the ceremony. I think it sounds fun, and I think you should do it!

Would you really have to rent a table? Can you just use a coffee table or night stand or someone''s card table w/a pretty tablecloth on it?

Whatmeworry, thanks! I think it''s neat to have the mother''s and/or groomsmen light the candles. It adds a bit to the ceremony and is a nice thing for them. I think my mom will like it and I doubt she''s aware that she''ll take part in the ceremony. I''m going to wait until the rehearsal to tell her.
