So. I ordered my dress a month or so ago. The more I look at the pics the more I become uncertain about it.

When I fiirst found the dress, tried it on, I really loved it. Then I thought about it for a bit (checked it out online and such) and then ordered it.

But now, after seeing it online, i dont like the way it looks on me. Is that weird.

It looks all elegant and bell like on the model. I mean it slender up top and then balloons out a little at the bottom. Ballroom style like. On me it just looks like an A-Line dress.

Im not sure if this is because I weigh more then the model or if it is because I have a shorted torso then the dress intends.

It looks like (on the model) the dress top goes down to the hips, and the bottom part thats all pufffy starts at her hips. On me the top actually goes down past my waistline and over my hips. When I orignally tried it on, I liked it b.c i felt like it elongated my torso. But in doing so I lose the whole bell-shape of the dress. I feel now that the dress looks like it is wearing me.

Am I crazy?

I still have time to get another dress (wedding is not until october) Please give you your HONEST opinion.

Should I look around for a different dress? Or do you think this one looks nice and i am just having doubts b/c anyone who compares their pic to the model's online would have doubts.

I'll include pics of both.

here is pic from maggie''s website

here is a frontal of me

see how it doesnt look bell like. I know its longer then it should be so maybe that accounts for some bunching but... I dont know. Maybe I am just having the normal doubts all brides get.

Gwyn - I don't think the dress is wearing you. Could it be that it needs to be taken in at the waist some so it "pushes" the dress/skirt part to get the bell effect? How do you like the top part of it on you? Is the only problem you have losing the bell shape?

ETA: sometimes I have doubts about my own dress too. But for the most part, I really like it. Plus - not sure how much you should base how you feel about the dress looks on you based on a picture of a model.

I think it's a very pretty, flattering dress on you. On the model is does poof out a bit more; do you just need a crinoline? Yours is poofing a bit, though.

First of all, that is such a pretty dress. I love the way the fabric is shaped on the top. As far as differences between the photos, it looks like the dress you tried on needs to be taken in some, and you are not wearing a poofy crinoline slip (petticoat?) underneath, so it looks a-line still and not ballroom. As far as where the poof begins, it looks to be about the same place, but you should definitely bring the model photo with you when you go for your fitting and explain your concerns then (if you still have them) and they should be able to make any adjustments if you are both in agreement that they are necessary.

I DO NOT think you should look for another dress. Maybe go back to the shop and ask to try the dress on with one of those poofy things underneath? If you were wearing one (in the photos), then I really think it's a matter of adding more layers of poof. It can't be an issue of where the poof begins on your hip. In any event, it does sound like you are going through some buyer's remorse, which is totally normal. Maybe start looking at shoes and transfer your energies in that direction?

Honestly, I think it's a beautiful dress and you look lovely in it!

When I first saw you in the gown I thought GREAT DRESS... then, "Well I hope she''s going to wear either hoops or a POOFY crinoline cause that dress demands it"

I think you''ll love it once you try it on with the right POOF implement. It will make everything else look just right. It''s a great dress on you, just needs POOF!

I agree, try the crinoline! They have the ones that just have poof on the very bottom to add just a little kick. That might be enough. I love your dress! And I think it looks just as good on you as her. This is my HONEST opinion: do not look for a new dress, try the crinoline that has poof right above the feet.

ETA: You do not look like you weigh more than the model to me, but hey, who am I to say I am a plus size haha. I am so terrified of posting my dress pics when I get them. I am bigger than all of you girls.

I LOVE your dress. An I agree. Try a crinoline.

OK - I don''t know what a crinoline is but if it makes the skirt poofy, I agree! That''s what your dress needs to make it more like what you see in the picture.

Has it been altered? I think part of the problem is that it doesn''t come in right in the waist. I don''t know if the waist needs to be taken in or the dropped waist raised a little, but it does seem like there is something a little off. I think poffing the skirt is a good idea, but without a change to how it sits on you I am not convinced you are going to get the effect you want.

I''m in a agreement with what''s been said already - GREAT dress, just need some poof-power. I think there are a couple things you can do to get it. One, like has been said, try a crinoline. A big crazy over the top one, even. It looks to me like that''s what the model HAS to be wearing. I don''t care where her hips are, a dress doesn''t take on that shape without something helping it. Two, when you get your dress, in the right size (did you order something different than the sample? if so, bigger or smaller?), find yourself a good seamstress. I bet the waist can be brought up to sit more on your hips. There really isn''t any decoration there, just the pleating, so I think it should be possible.

When I look at the model pic for MY dress, I get the "man, I wish it looked like that" feeling, too. The model wearing my dress has the tiniest waist you can imagine (ok, the tiniest everywhere), and in comparison I have no waist at all. The models also have the aid of 15 people poofing the skirt just so (probably stuffing bubble wrap or paper under it, for all we know), perfect lighting, perfect photographers, and photoshop at their disposal.

So, in summary, I LOVE your dress on you, and I think you have ZERO reason to regret it. Stay put, focus on jewelry and shoes in the meantime, and fall in love with your dress all over again when it arrives.

It has not been adjusted yet. It is a two piece. The top piece comes down past my hips. I think you can kind of see where my waist is in the photo (i have a v. short torso). In the beginning I really liked the dress because I felt it make my torso look a little longer. But now I am afraid that, because the top comes down so far and not sitting on my actual waistline, that that is why the dress does do the puffy thing its suposed to. I also feel it makes me look a little heavier. Then again, that could just be my own psyche.

I am very short, just barely 5 foot, and I have always been pretty petite. I never weighed more then maybe 105 in my life. In the past year, since moving out here, I have gained about 20lbs! So maybe the reason it doesnt look right to me is just b/c I have not adjusted to how my own weight gain looks on me yet.

When the dress comes in, I will ask her about the crynoline/hoops thing. I think it may puff out more after that extra length is taken off the bottom (dress is about 1 foot too long LOL).

In terms of pulling it in more...Based off my measurements I ordered 1 size smaller then the dress in the photo. the top part of this dress is pulled as tight as it could be, the women in the store said it could be pulled in further if I got a smaller size, BUT, my hips have always been a good size and because the top goes down over them, I feel like pulling it tighter around my waist will just accentuate where my waist is in the dress and not make the area right above the skirt part smaller.

Do you think I need to have the waist adjusted? Make it so the top stops where my actual waist is? If you look at the photo, you can see my actual waist is where the diagonal fabric that goes up and around my chest comes down on each side. I dont know if that makes sense to anyone but me...Um it is slightly below where my elbows are which is a few inches above where the top of the dress ends.

I understand what you''re saying about gaining weight, but I think you look fantastic.

Gwyn, I''m pretty sure the dress on the model is sitting over/on her hips - it has to be, or she''s all out of proportion! It looks to me that her waist is under her elbows, so not too far off from where the ribbon wraps around. So, the dress CAN poof w/ the top down over the skirt. And, a two piece??? If you need it pulled up, it''s almost guaranteed a seamstress can make the top a petite version.
5.gif

Gwyn, I absolutely LOVE That dress. I love how the dropped waist elongates you, you look fantastic!

I don''t know a SINGLE bride who didn''t doubt her dress at some point. As I''ve mentioned before, the whole process is so bizarre: you try on dozens, none of which are the right size. They''re too big, too small, too long, or a combination of all of them in various places. Then you have to make a decision and you don''t even SEE the dress again for 6 months, which basically gives you six months to doubt your decision. Then when you get the dress and try it on again, the seamstress is immediately hovering over you pinching things here and there and highlighting all the things that look wrong. And it''s not like you get to take it home with you, you leave it there and when you see the dress and it fits (and you love it), you get to see it for a whopping 10 minutes.

By the time your wedding day rolls around you''ve spent a total of a half of an hour IN the dress and the other 8 months analyzing your decision.

And, of course, the day of your wedding you absolutely, positively love it and can''t believe you ever doubted it. I promise. It''s going to look fantastic!

And after all of those months of constant doubt and scrutiny, it just ends up in a garment bag with broken bustles and chocolate cake all over it. Or maybe that''s just mine.

=) thanks all

Alright then!

Moment of psychotic nervousness/doubt finished!

You are right, im only gonna wear the thing for a day anyway =) and in 30 years take it out and laugh at the fashions "back then"

NewEnglandLady, you said it so well, and put everything so in perspective...

Gwyn, is that the sample gown at the salon, or your actual gown? If it''s the sample, I wouldn''t be worried at all...and if it''s your actual dress, I think it just needs some good alterations and a crinoline, and you''ll be golden. It''s beautiful!

Gwyn,
I think what you''re seeing is that on the model it appears to be more of a "drop waist" while on you maybe the waist hits closer to your natural waist. Either way, I really think this dress looks AMAZING on you. Very flattering and lovely. Just enough detail! I wouldn''t worry about it a bit. Like the others said, maybe you could do something to make it more "poofy" but I think it''s really classy!

Gwyn, if you''ll indulge me...I''d like permission to add my opinion stilll? (It''s favorable towards you!)

Gwyn, I LOVE your dress! I think that in order to get that shape you should go with hoops instead of a crinoline. I wore hoops AND a crinoline over top of them for my wedding (didn''t order big enough hoops to get the poof I wanted. LOL). A crinoline will definitely give you poof, but the hoops are what you need to get that bell shape. There are tons of cheap ones on ebay. People on the knot rave about the seller angelsbridal or something like that. I didn''t get mine from there, but I can''t remember the name of the seller I did buy from.

I think the dress looks amazing on you and you can give it the same shape as in the pic from the Maggie site with the proper undergarments!

You just have to wear one of those crinoline under-skirt thingies....the term slips my mind...under the skirt. I bet the model is wearing one. The dress looks better on you than on the model. Seriously.

Hi Gwyn! So far as I know, no dress poofs without a crinoline. I'd also betcha that model is wearing one.

It's a lovely dress and you will look even lovelier in it once it's altered.

I would have to agree. You need what they call a "double crinoline slip". Trust me. I have been married twice and needed one for my first wedding. Your local bridal salon should have one, or they can special order it for you. This will give you the look you are trying ot achieve. You can get this look without needing the hoops and it might also be more comfortable. Good Luck!

honestly? well...i think the dress looks much better on you than on the model.

poof it out, you''ll be gorgeous, and everyone doubts their dress at some point, so don''t stress about it anymore because you look fabulous in it!
