So, after 10 years of marriage, I am getting an upgrade We were pinching pennies when we got married (both in college) so although I have a very nice ring (.23 round center, approx SI2, G- according to jeweler, plus 12 pave 1pt. each, on a 14 kt gold setting with a leaf-like design ala Black hills gold) , I must admit that it's not exactly the ring of my dreams. I love oval diamonds- and would be ecstatic with a nice one that is around 1ct. BEcause the setting is hollow, several jewelers have told me that if they tried to add a larger center stone, The ring could be damaged in the process. Ideally, though, I'd love to have a 3-stone ring so I can keep the original stone (oval center set east-west and two .23-.25 rounds set at top left and bottom right.
I want to use the same setting for sentimental reasons. Some custom jewelers have said that they can melt the gold down and make it look similar to how it looks now. Not sure how I feel about that. In my fantasy world, I was hoping a jeweler could cut the setting in half, stretch the space in the center to fit in a larger stone, and make room for the two rounds. And somehow make it a little more cathedral style. That way the sides of the setting are not altered too much. Nutty idea? What is the best advice you can give me? Thanks!
