Has anyone else found that when you reach a certain *child bearing age* that no matter what you feel like, some people decide it MUST be because you''re PREGNANT? Sick? Must be morning sickness. Happy and bubbly? Must be hormones bouncing out of control. Decide to wear new makeup? Must be the "mother''s glow."

I''ve not been feeling well lately, had stomach issues, hot and cold flashes, then today I mentioned I was craving some ice cream. Not twenty minutes later, a good friend at work comes to my office and says the women up front in reception have been asking if I could be pregnant, and how that''s disappointing because they thought I was a *good girl.*

Shame shame. I''ve not been feeling good, and I want ice cream in the middle of a HELLISH heatwave.

Why is it whenever a woman is under the weather or a little *off* from her regular demeanor, and between the ages of 22 and 35, she''s deemed pregnant by nosy, gossipers?

What about women who are trying to have a child, and haven''t been able to yet? Don''t they know that sort of talk would be really hurtful to them? And don''t they know that someone who''s opted not to participate in the activity that causes pregnancy would be somewhat baffled as to why someone would think she''s pregnant? I mean, my name''s not Mary! It''s just annoying when people like to speculate and cause chaos. And that *Dr. Appointment* I went to yesterday, it wasn''t pre-natal. It was the flipping dentist.

Work rumors crack me up.

Jen,

I know that feeling, and it''s a lousy one. People assume things and it can be infuritating!

When I was 16 I went to the doctor with nausea, stomach pain, frequent urination, slightly swollen belly, etc....

Several doctors decided I must be pregnant - which I knew to literally be impossible. But that was the easiest explanation so for a good while, that''s what they kept saying and trying to convince me of. Despite negative pregnancy tests!!

Darnit, I was NOT pregnant!!

Turns out it was a huge ovarian cyst (15cm) - but it took finally getting an ultrasound tech to tell my primary doctor he was wrong to convince him. Really, it was about the worst feeling in the world - I was a teenager, and clearly, that meant I had NO SAY in whether or not it was possible I was pregnant. I was irresponsible and clueless, obviously!

So keep you head up... in your non-preggers state : )

Ugh! I hate that! Towards the end of my time at my old job I was getting really bad migraines (they''ve stopped since I quit...connection?

). They made me feel nauseas, get really sweaty and dizzy, and the smells of certain foods made the nausea worse. Of course my boss was like, oh you must be pregnant. Um, no, thanks for saying that out loud to the whole department...in front of me...

My dad says stuff like that a lot too. Any time I call with any type of news his first guess is always "are you pregnant?" Guess he thinks very highly of me...

Same for me - I told coworkers that I had a terrible night with stomach ache and the fist comment was...maybe your pregnant...grrrrrr how narrow minded!

I feel your frustration!

My situation tends to be a little different... it''s always my BOYFRIEND that thinks I might be. If I have any tummy irritation, particularly in the morning, if I crave things, if I''m moody, his worst fear kicks in and he''s convinced I must be. Drives me crazy because we''re very responsible, I just tend to have a high sensitivity. When I tell him I got nauseous on the train he freaks, even though I ALWAYS get motion sickness... What makes it worse... I''ve been on the pill so long I''ve actually stopped getting my period every month, which my dr. says is FINE, but my BF begs me to take a test just to reassure him. It drives me crazy. Not enough to stop relations, but, well... it''s annoying.

I definitely don''t mention my tummy aches to my coworkers.

I totally agree, at my former work every time I went to the doctor my boss felt the need to make some comment... and often said things like if you are going to get pregnant just don''t do it before X deadline... like the deadline was first and foremost on my mind with my childbearing decisions. I''m married but that was still totally inappropriate! I dont miss that job a bit!

Hate it when people do that...

I love saltine crackers and one day I had a box at work and took a handful with me into a coworkers office. EVERYONE in the room staired at me and finally i screamed out, "IM NOT PREGNANT, LEAVE ME ALONE!".

I hate that too!!! I get that from my mother if I say that I have any cravings-its really irritating

HAHAHAHA...this is too funny! I was just a lunch with people from work, and through out the conversation there were several references to some really gross stuff such as a kid puking at dinner last night, someone lse found a worm in a raisin and roadkill in quite some detail...and because on all 3 occasions I asked them to please change the subject while we were eating, one of the women suggested I might be pregnant!!! Would this not make most people want to hurl??? Do yo have to be pregnant??? And actually I am pregnant, just not sharing it at work yet, but I''m quite positive this would have bothered me before as well...I don''t know what peoples obssesion w/ pregnancy is all about...it''s strange!!

Aw...i''m sorry fisher! Try not to let your gossiping co-workers get to you!

It doesn''t bother me as much as it makes me wonder WHY they seem so involved in other peoples'' lives. You know? Sort of makes me feel a little sad for them that they find enjoyment in dreaming up ailments and *conditions* for others. Crazy odd.

Another co-worker came in with a SINUS COLD today, and she was sniffling a lot, and the same woman asked if she might be *expecting." Silly me, I didn''t know sniffles were a symptom of pregnancy.

Some people.

Reminds me of my college clinic and mind you I went to a fancy ivy league school. I was literally DYING from the flu (ok not literally hehehe) so I went to the clinic. I said I felt most nauseous in the mornings. I told them I was NOT pregnant because I was not having sex. Did they listen to me? Nope. Had me pee in a cup and then sent me home! I was LIVID.

I refused to go back there and spent the next week miserable and without meds sweating and shaking in bed. I missed a week of class!

Not every women of child bearing age is pregnant people! Argh. LOL

magpye,
I went to an ivy also for a couple years...had a terrible cough and sinus infection that was making me nauseous b/c my balance was thrown off. Yep, doctor''s first reaction was that I was pregnant. Not physically possible for me to have been pregnant.

Hang in there fisher! Silly girls.

this is so annoying. i agree. i''m hypoglycemic so sometimes i really crave protein when i''m tired. And everytime i want string cheese i get this look. I feel like saying, "hey, just because there are a lot of pregnant women here doesn''t mean i''m one of them." grrrr

Eurgh. I don''t even mention it anymore when I''m feeling dizzy or something... Or else I get asked. And I''m not pregnant either!

People just assume it with me, especially those people who have known me through the 5 miscarriages I had before I had my 3 boys. I''ve been pregnant so often even *I* wonder if I could be when there''s no possible way!

But seriously, I think women especially get excited at the prospect of someone being pregnant, and as annoying as a doctor''s office visit can be or nosy coworkers, I''ve still found that most people (including myself) ask that question to people we care about for the right reasons. Sorry you have to deal with it, though, Fisher....in your shoes I would probably be pretty offended too!
