I wanted to use a US link for this, but it seems to be largely unreported over here

Only one state bans the use of leg-irons on female prisoners when they are taken to hospital to give birth.

What is this, the Dark Ages?

I know nothing about the US justice system, I'm the first to admit it. I do know that most UK women prisoners are in jail for petty crimes such as shoplifting. Are there really large numbers of dangerous pregnant women in US jails?

I don't agree with the "human rights" groups who are campaigning against the "humiliating" orange jumpsuit uniform that prisoners have to wear; at the very least it means that if a dangerous criminal tries to escape, they're going to be spotted easily. If these rights groups need a cause to fight for, then surely this one (the pregnant women) is more important than an untrendy orange all-in-one?

Most women in jail in most states are there for serious crimes.
The prisons are way too over crowded to keep them in so they usualy get house arrest or treatment programs for anything but violent crimes in my state and a lot of other states.
