My grandfather recently gave me my grandmother''s engagement ring. The diamond is small at .25 ct or so, but as it is over 60 years old, I want to keep on it, and feel extremely honored that out of his 15 grandchildren that he chose to give it to me.

So I''m looking for some ideas on how that can be included in a wedding band. In addition, about how long will it take to get this ring included, want to make sure that i get it completed in plenty of time.

Ultimately my fiance will choose the design, but she has asked me for a few ideas, so I''m asking you guys for a few ideas now!!

Thanks!!

Paul

I don't know how contemporary your tastes but here's an example of a ring worn by Mara's husband with a single diamond incorporated.

Forgive me, but have you gotten permission to remove the diamond and change the actual ring from your grandfather? If not, don't make any plans till you ask permission. He might not want it altered in any way.

Yes, I have gotten permission. To quote him when he handed it to me... Here's the ring... You can use it if you want for the engagement ring, even though it's not exactly what you are looking for, a promise ring, or can include it in a wedding band, necklace, or if you really need the cash, you can sell it. (The last item was never an option for me...)

My grandfather is an 80 year old shoot it from the hip Hills of Kentucky type of person. He doesn't tell you something unless he means it. He was also with me when I did buy the engagement ring, and that lit up his eyes. Also when I told him what I intend to use the diamond for he became extremely happy. The existing setting is nothing special, just a 4 prong white gold head, with a yellow gold ring. I have only seen my grandfather brought to tears on 5 occasions. When one of his daughters died, when his wife died, when I graduated from college (1st of his grandchildren to do so), when he saw the ring for the first time, and when I told him my plans for the ring.

So no worries on the permission front. He's just happy that it will stay in the family. He feels extremely honored, and outside of me and my fiance, I would place him as the most excited person for our engagement. (Above our parents, simply cuz he normally doesn't show emotion over anything.)

Are you interested in something more modern or traditional for your wedding band? Superidealist posted "In praise of smaller diamonds" not so long ago. There was one set in that post where a small diamond was inset into a concave setting (4th or 5th pic down) - very, very nice indeed. I think that would look fabulous on a man's hand.

I'm fairly open. Since I've begun hunting, I saw some settings on Good Old Gold that were nice. AbsoluteTitanium also had some very nice ones. I prefer a wedding band with some meat to it though, not a big fan of a small thin wedding band.

Thanks for pointing me to that topic. I really like some of those also.

There was one very interesting band in here with a tiny diamond (.03ct) that was interesting. I am sure it could accommodate your diamond with some modification. This is if you are looking for something a bit on the unusual side.

I'd like to know how to get the link thing in so you would not have to copy/paste the url. Oh well...

Thanks all for the information. I now have a plethora of choices. Also, chances are I will be moving to WY, so Wink (who is the one in Boise) may get a closer look at also).

You can do links by clicking the far right button in the reply link or by typing the following name of website
