Anyone have any suggestions for where or through whom we could rent a vacation home for along weekend this summer?

Three or four couples...not looking to spend a bazillion dollars...

Admin - if this isn''''t in the right area, please feel free to move it!

Thanks-
Lyss

How about Hangout? Mmmm....vacation.....

Hi!

I live in NJ, and my favorite places "down the shore" as we say in Jersey

include Spring Lake, Sea Girt, some parts of Manasquan, and if you want to go a little further south- the Stone Harbor/ Avalon areas. They are all gorgeous, and somewhat pricey....but ok if you are doing it just for a week. My friends and I rented a house in Point Pleasant (a few mins from Manasquan/Sea Girt) for a whole summer 4 yrs ago, and it was about $15K, and the place wasnt even that great- ughhh! But you can find some really pretty homes near the beach that would be worth it for the week- Good luck!

I love Avalon/Stone Harbor, we stay in Avalon where it''s a little quieter and nice, but then we can hop down to Stone Harbor for shopping or a night on the town, I highly reccommed that area.

I''m from Philly so it seems like EVERYONE here goes "down the shore" to NJ beaches, but I''ve grown up going to the Rehoboth/Dewey/Bethany area myself. One benefit of that area is the outlet shopping just outside of town... and golf for those who prefer!

Other than that, I''m a big fan of the overall laidback boardwalk scene of Rehoboth... although the bars and nightlife in Dewey are pretty easily accessible. One thing to consider... I know my parents rent their house by the week (Sat-Sat) only, no long weekends except in the off-season... I think that''s pretty common practice for most condos and houses in that area during the summer, so it might be a little more tricky finding a place that is willing to rent for just a weekend. But good luck!!!

Belmar!!!

Well, maybe I''m biased b/c I live here!

I honestly think it depends on what kind of shore vacation you want! Belmar is very popular with young couples and singles. Nice nightlife, if that your thing.

Have kids? Still nice, but Point Pleasant would be better.

Want a really classy place? Then Spring Lake/Seagirt would work for you.

Ocean Grove is cute, too. Lots of little Victorians and such, but not as exciting.

Plus, all I know is my little section of the shore. I''m sure there are others that have qualities that might fit your needs even better. What exactly are you looking for?

Fatafelice-

I like Belmar too for a fun night out, you are sure to run into many Joey''s and Vinny''s there though- you cant deny that!!! lol
Where do you live in Belmar?

I live in the Philly suburbs but grew up in LA. Down the shore was a new thing to be. Of all the places we love Stone Harbor/Avalon the best. There are other nice places too. I hear Spring Lake is nice but not that kid friendly. I love SH/A because you can walk all over, and it is calm and peaceful...no Atlantic City or busy roads etc...

How about Nantucket?? The prices at Avalon and Stone Harbor are getting crazy. Not to say Nantucket is cheap, it''s not. But a great spot, wonderful food and shopping. In NJ, I also like Bay Head, and Harvey Cedars...(SP??) Went there as a kid and loved it.

Kaleigh, my hubby read in Philly mag that shore prices are on the way back down...who knows? The stuff we have priced in Stone Harbor is insane. One house was new construction last summer, I thought the overall room sizes were so small as to be unesless. Someone bought it at the end of the summer. It is on the market again for something like 250,000.00 more than they just paid. Nothing was done to it, it was brand new! How insane is that...I love Nantucket and the Cape and we go every summer since my kids camp is up there, but it is a long way from here (suburban Philly)...and Nantucket is especially tough with the ferry and such. The Hamptons is lovely but not a klot easier to get to...if you fly, it is easier BUT the flights get booked up quickly and if there is fog you are stuck!

Wow. Thanks for the responses guys! I really appreciate it! I''ve definitely got more to go on now.

A little bit more about us:

There are going to be three or four couples. Maybe one infant...but kid friendly is definitely not a requirement. We all enjoy a drink every now and again and we also enjoy great food...but nightlife isn''t terribly important particularly since we will likely just sort of hang out with one another...

Honestly, I''d like a place near the beach, with a big porch...that is walking distance to some good restaurants.

We are coming from Southwestern PA, and we''d like it to be within driving distance...trying to save some money!

Keep the ideas coming! And I really really do appreciate your help.

You guys rock!

Dani - I live on the "wrong side of the tracks" in Belmar (LOL)...it would be hard to be much farther from the beach and still be within the town limits. If you know where the Windmill is, I am in that area. I am actually dreading summer a little for the exact reasons you mentioned. I MUCH prefer living here without the summer crowds.

Lysser - Hmmmm. Sounds like Belmar might not be the best place for you, though there are a couple good restauraunts on Main Street. Maybe something a little farther south. I don''t know much below Point Pleasant.

What about Long Beach Island? My friends have a house in Beach Haven and it''s just lovely there--low key, great beaches, decent restaurants and bars. Harvey Cedars is also nice but probably a bit more expensive but it''s also on LBI.
