First of all Happy Valentine's Day to all.

OK so I was just quite surprised at the cost of VD flowers. And it got me curious.
If you buy or receive flowers how much do they generally cost?

I know it depends on the size and specific flowers of course but just wondering

How much do your flowers cost?

HI:

I no longer buy flowers for VD b/c of the expense. But I buy flowers, otherwise, on a regular basis. Usually roses. $22 bucks at Safeway for a dozen.

cheers--Sharon

Happy Valentine's to you, your husband, and your lovely parents.

I got a dozen yellow roses last week for my anniversary and they're still beautiful.

They were probably $20- $25 from the fancy supermarket here. I love them.

Good for you! I buy roses on the regular, but never yellow ones anymore. They don't open up for me!!! My friend had the same issue!!! Too bad cuz I love yellow roses a lot.

I never buy flowers, I prefer to receive or give a plant in a pretty pot as a gift. My favourite to buy is an orchid. They last longer and next year you get more! I also love “striking” a new plant from an existing plant and giving it away. I’m on a Facebook group that centres around this thought of sharing.

Those are gorgeous @missy !

From the Supermarket so less than $25...and they're beautiful!

Wow! Those would never be 25$ here! Great deal. Everything marked up for VD like Mothers Day.

We don't buy cut flowers any more, but when we used to, it was under $25, from the supermarket.
Every spring we buy a potted hyacinth, preferably with multiple blooms. Later we plant the bulbs.

When our flowers are in season, we sometimes cut them and bring them in. Roses, hyacinths, lilies of the valley, little violets from our lawn, even a few dandelions! DH used to bring in daffodils but I find their fragrance overpowering.

As the recipient of both of these bouquets—I do not want to know. Lol.
The first are from DH for VDay and the others were delivered to me on Monday and are from my DD and her boyfriend.
I really appreciate that they make the effort to please me with flowers bc I am so cliche that I would be soo sad if I didn’t get flowers on Vday and Mother’s Day and my birthday. I didn’t expect the flowers from DD—so that was a sweet surprise—they were not for Vday , actually.

Flowers in my part of the world aren’t particularly expensive; even a bunch from a nice florist would be <$50. The prices don’t seem to change much for Valentine’s.

Flowers are so expensive here you wouldn't believe it though it definitely depends on the arrangement of course. Deli flowers are beautiful for what they are but cannot compare to certain flower shop arrangements.

I, for one, told my DH 25 years ago no more flowers. They make me sad. They die too soon. And now given the cost of them around here well no thanks. I will save that money for something more worthwhile to me (cat food for the ferals haha)

mum had the misfortune to die just before valentine's day and she wanted to go home to Dunedin and have the funeral down there, plus it was university graduation, we almost couldnt get any roses, flower princes shy rocket this time of year

- mum did allright, my dad always gave mum the hugest bunch on their anniverary that filled every vase in the house, so we got mum flowers so big they had to be transported to the cemetery in their own hearse
it was scorching hot weather and by the next day they were wilted

i love flowers, ive never had flowers on valentine's day
i couldn't tell you the last time i got flowers not even when mum died
a week latter my sister's house was full of flowers all dying so i tidied them up for her using flowers from her garden
work gave me a $40 supermarket voucher
i went and brought my own God dam flowers

nice flowers at the supermarket made by a florist are about $60 with nice wrapping
the grocery store next door to work with basic wrapping do a small bunch for $25 and one with more flowers for $35
about 20 years ago when i worked in central Wellington i worked opposite a wholesaler with a fancy retail grocery and fresh produce, i used to buy cut flowers every pay day

I can't top @Daisys and Diamonds, hitting all the emotions up there. I hope you get your flowers soon.

Is $0 a choice? My wife loves flowers and I seldom get them and VD is the worst time. She is more the TJs flowers type but a truly nice bouquet is a treat, too. Have not done that for years. I should do this at some low-pressure time of year but I keep hearing my dad's voice as he joked to my mom: "If I ever buy you flowers for no good reason, there'll be a good reason!"

This year we laughed as we exchanged similar but not-quite-identical brown boxes of expensive chocolates from our favorite local chocolatiers. (At least we didn't run into each other in the same shop like we did years ago! :lol-2:) So we've been sort of snowbound here with fancy chocolates.

Along the same lines, I want to know everyone's favorite Valentine's chocolates. Yesterday I came home from spending Valentine's Day at the hospital with my brother, to find no flowers and no chocolates. I wanted to cry (which I've been doing a lot, because my brother is very sick). DH said, "I'm sorry I didn't get you any flowers or chocolates. I thought about it, but you're so fussy. I was afraid whatever I got would be a disappointment." I reminded him that the specialty food shop up the street sells nice chocolates (Lake Champlain Chocolates co.). So he went out "for a walk" and came back with a box.

That makes him sound like a monster, doesn't it? He's very loving. This was a lapse.

I want to add. The cost of my flowers is Priceless!! I love to look at them and even after they die, they make for a good decoration. But also. Priceless bc I know my DH gave them to me with love. And also because I would rather get all the flowers in my life than at my funeral. Sad but true. Many get flowers only when they die. And finally. A nice dinner, chocolates, etc. any disposable expense in this life has a temporary effect. I will happily take flowers and glad I don’t have to choose.

@glitterata, I’m sorry your brother is very sick and you are feeling sad. Everything can feel overwhelming when you are dealing with a very sick loved one. It’s stressful on everyone. Have a good cry. Sometimes it helps just to get it all out. Sending you hugs.

Your husband doesn’t sound like a monster. He screwed up. Most husbands do every once in a while. Can the two of you go out to dinner and just spend time alone together? It might help to give yourself a break for a few hours.

Thank you, @Calliecake . I appreciate your kind words.

I want to know more about the chocolate @LilAlex and his wife love.

But I'm hijacking the flower thread, so I will stop now, with apologies.

@glitterata, I’m sorry if I overstepped. I’ve been where you are with a sick family member and you sounded so sad. Please don’t apologize. What you are going thru is so hard.

You didn't overstep at all! I hope I didn't sound sarcastic. I really do appreciate your kindness. It is so hard, and kind words help.

You are very valuable and loved. Post always. I am sorry for your DB health. May his improve and heling vibes across the miles. Chocolates and flowers and everything else.

I would say but they are local (both shops!) and I don't want to name my town. So I'll just throw out that our very favorite is Dandelion for their single-origin, two-ingredient chocolate bars that taste sensational and really convince you of the terroir of chocolate! Not cheap but a cheap luxury for sure. And not the best for VD since it is much more bar- than box-oriented.

About your spouse: so not a monster. I can empathize -- although I might not say it out loud like he did. The way he describes you is how I would describe her -- but about restaurants. I can eat at a food-cart pod or a Michelin-starred event and would do either ay any time of day with 20 minutes advance notice. (I mean it has to be good food, but that comes in all shapes and sizes and price-points.) I'm a little brother; I'll go anywhere. She, OTOH, has to be feeling a certain type of cuisine or part of town or atmosphere. If I suggest a place she'll think and think and finally say, "Oh! You know what's right down there that's supposed to be really good?" And I'll say, "That place I just mentioned?" And she'll laugh and tell me about a spot that was just written up or a friend talked up. So guess where we go? =)2

Awww Sammie is beautiful and indeed priceless ♥️

Definitely under $100, unless it was for someone else for a special occasion and had to be delivered by a florist, for ex.

Otherwise, I occasionally buy flowers from the grocery store for about $10. Interesting topic though because I'd feel like I wasted money to spend more than I do on flowers. Yet I/we often spend money on restaurant meals and other happy things that don't last very long, so IDK.

I think over time priorities change for better or worse. And there really is no right or wrong imo. For example we used to spend a small fortune on eating out at fancy restaurants. I calculated it one year and we spent over 30k. After many years of eating out three nights a week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) I had enough. I didn’t find it as enticing and then we just stopped. I don’t miss it at all. Now my number one disposable income priority is helping the animals. The ferals and the rescue animals looking for loving homes. We spend a great majority of our disposable income on them. And that makes me happy. They say there’s no such thing as true altruism and I agree. We feel good doing good. I can’t get that much joy from anything else including bling or buying any material goods

@Luce this is a stupid question please forgive me. My main experience is with dsh cats. Is Sammie a Siamese? Do they have any unique personality traits? She is so sweet looking ♥️
