Love it. I bought a light pen just so I could do this at home. I've played with all of my rings (with and without a loupe).

I love that. I need to buy a cheap light off EBay.

I should definitely get a light pen! I would never have thought to check my melee diamonds. It is a cool little secret!

I love your spinel ring @mochiko42

:lickout:I bought an LED flashlight from Walmart for around $9.00. It works like a charm. I have a scattering of blue and orange fluoresce in my jewelry box...so cool!

What is interesting is my ER GIA cert states no fluorescence but it is indeed!

How fun!

Fun!!

It still always surprises me how stones that look so similar in normal light can be so different under UV!! :cool2:

My halos have the odd fluorescent diamond. It's so cool.

Very cool. Next time I change my gell polish I'm going to try this!

I love this, I have a watch with at least one that is super orange, so cool!

I want to see! That shouldn’t happen and I’m intrigued.

The mele on the shank of my E ring also has varying levels of flour. I need to get a better UV lighht so I can take pictures

Fun. The orange fluoro is cool. I love how rubies (and apparently spinels) glow too.

Best when you shut off the uv light, and it still glows! Phosphorescence.

Here is a photo of the fluorescence. It is hard to capture. You can see the baguette and round in one side also glow!

I'm confused. Is it a UV or LED light that shows fluoro? I want to buy a cheap light and want to make sure I am buying the right type. Thanks.

My e-ring (AGS with negligible fluor) is definitely a slight-medium fluor, and one of my earrings glows like a Xmas tree, along with a bunch of my melee too. Fun!

Ultraviolet is the light it's emitting, LED is the type of 'bulb' (Light Emitting Diode).

There is a large range of colours that LEDs are made to give off (infrared through to ultraviolet, I believe).
You can get UV lights made from different light sources (such as those retro 'black light' strip lighting tubes).
You need an LED light that emits UV! :)

I wouldn't recommend using them too much, though - (some?) wavelengths of UV light damage the retinas in your eyes over time, and I wouldn't place money on LED diodes knocked out cheaply in a factory in the Far East being guaranteed to not emit those wavelengths... lol

This would do the job, I reckon, and I don't think you could get one any cheaper!

I figured I'd add my spinel rings to this thread. They glow bright red under my uv light and are so cool to look at that way. There seems to be some red interference but it's just kick back from the spinels. My camera was having a hard time taking pics.

- this halo ring has one brightly fluorescent diamond and two light ones (doesn't show those well in pics).

- the CvB ring only has one fluorescent diamond melee.

And this last one is my pink spinel and paraiba ring.
