Verifying Platinum........

Hi All,
Is there a way to verify what kind of Platinum alloy you have in your ring? I wonder how many people get their rings custom made, told that it would be one alloy but made with another cheaper option. Yet, people would never know, or would they? How do consumers protect themselves & get what they pay for?

There are some tests than can be conducted, but they are best left to experts as some involve the use of very strong acids. I have no idea how many appraisers know how to do it, but no doubt there are plenty out there somewhere.
