Y'all. My sweet 81 year old father, who is widowed, has a lady friend he's been dating. Neither of them want to get married but he said she bought him some really nice shirts and a cake for his birthday so he didn't want to come off as too cheap this Christmas so he bought this ring for her. It hasn't arrived yet. I told him I wish he would've asked me first but alas, he didn't. I wouldn't have ever purchased this ring myself but he said he found he kept gravitating back to it and just loves it for her. Given the price point, is this horrible? He represented to me that it comes with a GIA cert although it's not in the listing. He mentioned something about them sending it out to get it -- but doubt he'd get this back by Christmas if that's the case -- but I'm wondering if he misunderstood and is just seeing the "GIA" logo on the side of the ad. Anyway, would love thoughts on this -- I pointed out the difference in colors of the stones, etc but didn't want to hurt his feelings either.....just don't want him getting totally ripped off. I told him if it's not pretty enough when he gets it to return it.

‘I’ don’t consider that a total ripoff. Weighing in my dad isn’t going to be schlepping around to local estate/pawn shops for a lower price for the same all over look.
That company he bought from on eBay (while I didn’t exactly enjoy my encounter with them) I’d consider reputable and not for huge concern.

The whole scenario - I’d be more concerned (even though you stated neither are wanting marriage) about a ring as a gift, in response to receiving shirts. But you aren’t asking about that! :)

Eeeeeh, considering the price of gold nowadays... nope, not a ripoff. I understand why you wouldn't have bought it, there are quite a few things to be nitpicky about with this ring, but in the end, does it really matter? Your father likes it, his girlfriend is probably also going to like it, and if it ends up being terrible in person, he'll just ship it right back to where it came from.

It will be fine. That's a reputable seller, and the ring is going through eBay's verification process--it will be shipped to GIA for verification before it's sent to your father. So he'll know that it's really made of 14k gold with natural diamonds within a few grades of the claimed K SI2, and heated natural rubies. The price was reasonable for the stated specs. As @Avondale says, he likes it and his girlfriend will probably like it.

There are many reasons older folks (and younger folks!) may choose not to get married, but they may still want to symbolize their love and less-than-marriage commitment with a ring. It's a sweet gesture.

Thanks so much to all of you. I feel better. Yes, neither of them ever want to get married again. I told him she's going to think it's a "ring ring" when she opens a small box like that.....LOL. He says they're both very clear on where they stand. I'm just glad he didn't get scammed as there are so many bad sellers on eBay! Thanks again everyone!!

I agree with everyone here... the price is appropriate, and even if it is without a GIA cert, it is being authenticated by a GIA G.G. (that's where ebay will have the seller send it in Carlsbad). I would have zero concerns. More importantly, I bet he is (and should be) very proud that he picked it out all by himself. This is awfully sweet, and I think she's just going to love it!

Aww that’s a really pretty ring! Decent price too! Haha get us a hand shot if you can!

Wilson Brothers is not the same as Wilson's Estate, AFAIK. I had never heard of the former 'til now but they seem to move a lot of product.

At that price point, the risk is modest, imo; most you can lose is $500.

Aww, this is such a sweet present
