Vintage Setting Help?

Sadly, my income situation changed recently and setting my little purple sapphire is out is the question for setting at the moment. However, I could manage to lift my spirits with a less grand setting project and decided since my bff's wedding is approaching, I'd set my cute little pink cushion spinel to match my bridesmaid dress.

I've been on the hunt for a cheap silver vintage-style cushion setting. Emphasis on metalwork, not a lot of diamonds integrated into it and just a nice old fashioned bulk sort of look. I finally found one that seems perfect for it! However the spinel is 5.9x5.9, and the setting I'm looking at is 5.0-5.5. Dun dun duuuuuuunnnnn.

I've read a few places that a setting can go up or down about 1mm from how it measures. Is this completely accurate? Would this be applicable even though there is a listed range for the setting? I'm ignorant to all things setting at the moment! I think me being so picky doesn't help either...

I cannot see the pic.

Gah! So sorry. I tried saving the photo differently, hopefully this one will work.

It is unlikely to fit. How rounded are the corners of your stone? It doesn't help that the setting has short prongs either. Two things might have to happen to make it work.
1. Set the spinel up high (need long prongs)
2. The spinel has rounded corners so it will be just a touch "smaller" for the fit. A squarer stone (with pointer ends) will not fit.

Thank you for your help as always Chrono! To me the corners of the spinel look rounded, but what the hell do I know really, its why I ask lol. I think I've decided to go with Carmen's suggestion(GREAT find BTW Carmen!) Since I like how it manages to be both dainty and sizable. And it's garunteed to fit the spinel. A bit out of my hoped price range since I was looking at silver but it'd still be cheaper than having the jewelers make a setting! :?

One more question if its no bother. The spinel is a nice ice/baby pink, sometimes mauve depending on the light. However I noticed in hand its more peachy and blends with my skin tone a bit. Will the white gold help offset the peachy skin blending phenomenon? Or should I get used to a peach spinel? Lol.

Do you mind posting a picture of your spinel? I'm wondering how rounded it is. If your skin is peachy the way mine is 18k rose gold, it helps if the metal colour stands out against your skin so it creates a contrast so that the peachy stone doesn't blend in too much with your finger.

Yeah no problem!

I know it would help better to have a picture of the spinel in hand but I can't get to it till later tonight.

Soft rounded corners so I think it won't fit into the first setting. In the second setting Carmen suggested, due to where the prongs are located (NSEW), you are leaving the 4 corners of the spinel exposed. Are you all right with such a risk? It's probably fine if you wear it with care as an occasional wear RHR. It doesn't look peachy at all in the picture you posted, but a feminine soft pink.

Just an fyi, iirc, I believe that DiamondZone was recently found to be using diamond simulants instead of diamonds in their settings.

Interesting, Minuous. I still think if the settings are 14k, they are a great deal even if tiny melee are simulants.

Interesting, I had read that the Chinese ebay seller diamondmounts had been using simulants, but I hadn't seen anything about diamondzone which I think has a store in Chicago.
