So? Accomplishes nothing and is a waste of time and resources.

it that''s the only ''receipt''/''paper trail'' for my vote, i''ll take it. no paper trail, no democracy.

So emails are not democratic? And neither are internet forums?

i thought the conversation was specific re voting........and, no, the internet is not democratic. ask the hosts of this forum.....they are very clear that this is not a democracy in action, that it is their very own domain.

I have been reading a heavy text on ancient Greek and Roman history - the meaning of democracy was quite sexiist and elitist at the birth of democracy.
Only the larger land holding gentry were entitled to vote, but they were the same people who were the soldiers who defended their democracy.

One of the more interesting Athenian ideas was the exiling of one citizen each year. They had a big gathering where a few large urns were shattered and each person wrote one the name of one persons who iritated them. All the chards with names were thrown into the center and counted up.

The person who managed to turn off the most people was exiled for 5 years.

Maybe this addition to democray would aid politivccs in USA just now?

It seems you are faced with a poor choice between 2 sides; one is incompetence and the other is incoherence?

garry, you called that right: incompetence v. incoherence.......

US democracy in the beginning was meant only for white, male, landowners....so some things hadn''t changed since ancient days. only over time, with lives lost, has ''democracy'' expanded to include women, people of color, non-landowners, etc.

pass me an urn, please.

Ancient history is not my area of expertise, but didn''t the Athenians expose unwanted babies outside of the borders of the city state, too? I may just have urns on the mind, but I thought they were put into pots or urns of some kind and left to die.

I looked it up. Read more here.

deb, my reference to passing the urn was to write the name of my most favored outcast on a shard....and you can pretty well guess who that would be

however, the article was interesting as i never considered that a rescued baby would end up a slave....silly me.

That was clear, MZ. When I started to think babies were placed in urns, however, I started to wonder if I was remembering correctly or if all this urn talk was affecting me!

it does have a certain logic to it, doesn''t it?! shattered urn used to select ''the outcast'' and leaving babies being cast out in urns.......ancient greek logic, that is.
