Hello :)

Has anyone done this or known someone who has done this? My friend mentioned going to a Korean hair salon? My hair is stubbornly straight but not overly coarse or thin. I am looking for a body wave type thing, kind of the effect people can achieve through large hot rollers (and for me tons of hairspray).

Thanks in advance!

Hi Snowhappy,

I''m Asian and I''ve been getting wavy perms for about 4 years now. I''m not sure where you live, but I go to a great japanese salon, Momotaro, in NYC. My stylist is Ayato and he''s awesome.

If you''re planning on getting a perm before the wedding, I''d do it at least a month in advance.. just in case you don''t like it, the waves will relax a bit by then.

Hope this helps!

Thanks gongjoo!

I hope to make a visit to New York this summer! Do you mind if I ask you how much it costs?

I just had a cut and perm and I believe it cost $150 or $160.

why? why on earth? All my life I''ve wanted straight asian hair....wish I could trade with you!

heheh I guess the grass is always greener!

Asian hair is absolutely gorgeous. It has a fantastic high gloss to it! (i really envy you)

I don''t think I would use a chemical treatment..... For a special occasion you could always get the hot rollers out!

I agree! DON''T DO IT! I saw your hair in your pictures, and it''s so beautiful and straight!
(This coming from a girl who shells out big bucks to have her hair chemically straightened!)
You''re right, the grass is always greener!

Haha, I was thinking the same exact thing!!

I know I''ve mentioned this before, but growing up in Houston my best friend was Japanese. She had gorgeous, super-shiny, thick, perfectly straight, black hair and a beautiful deep complexion. I had a crazy mess of uncontrollable, course, curls in a very blah, non-descript color along with a fair complexion that burned easily and got really really red whenever I was hot or active....

We both were so insanely jealous of each others hair and skin. We just wanted what the other had sooooooooooooo badly!!!!

Once I discovered mousse and other handy hair products, life with my hair got easier. But what I wouldn''t give somedays for a beautiful head of shiny straight hair!!!

snow-happy - I know some girls who have done this, and it''s actually really hard, I think, to get the right amount of curl in asian hair. they usu end up with either much tighter curls than they wanted, or it just looks the same after a few weeks. I think there''s something about the thickness of the hair or whatever, that doesnt hold the wavy look. but maybe they have improved the chemicals or something... sorry I don''t really have any good recs

if you just want some curls for the wedding though, then I would just get my hair done for the day... that''s what I did!

DON:T DO IT!!! I spend so much time straightening mine just to get 1/2 of the look that you get naturally. I would just use curlers and product for the wedding day!!

I guess you always want what you don''t have huh.

Like you, I have super straight hair and doesn''t hold curls very well. My Taiwanese friend in college actually asked me where I got my straight perm. But when I got my hair cut and layered last Friday, and the stylist curl my hair to achieve a body wave look with a fair amount of hairspray. The wave stayed for ~ 4hrs. If you just want wavy hair for the wedding, then curl it with lots of products to help hold the curls (not just hairspray but other products that hold curls yet give movement). Also have you ever had your hair permed before? Well I did back in junior high and the perm last a total of one day. The next day when I washed my hair, it was straight again (I know it didn''t have anything to do with the chemicals because my sister permed her hair at the same time and her hair stayed curly). So there''s a possibility that might happen.

hmm that IS strange that perm would wash out so quickly. Mine usually last about 6 months and I have hair to the middle of my back. Of course, it takes about 3 hours in the salon so maybe the chemical set in longer?

I have several asian friends who had their hair curled for the wedding and not even halfway through, the curls fell flat. I was told by my stylist that if you have either a perm or color in your hair, that a hairstyle will last longer.

Well, I''m getting married next weekend, and I got a perm because I wanted to have big sexy waves... so I''ll let you know how it goes!

gongjoo --

That is awesome! Can you post pictures?

If I were you I would go to a salon with Asian stylists and Asian clientele and ask them. They may have pictures in their portfolios of clients and they would really know how to work with Asian hair.

I''m white, but I go to a salon that''s Asian run, and I''m the only white girl ever there. But my stylist had mentioned that he had been trained on a Japanese straightening system - he may know how to do perms as well. Are you in SoCal? Something makes me think you are. I''m sure there are lots of salons that cater to Asian clients in the area that you could talk to.

I go to a place in Fountain Valley, Vietnamese run, that''s not too upscale but my stylist is very professional and talented. But last he mentioned he was trying to open his own salon. (Not sure.. it''s been *gasp* six months since my last trim!!! I must get back in). But you should check around in your area and I can give you the name of my place in OC if you like, but I''m sure you can find something close by you (wherever you are).

Good luck, but try it out a good amount of time early, so if it doesn''t turn out you can get it relaxed!! Perms on any hair type are a tricky thing.

Well, you can have my hair because I'm always trying to make mine look like yours! And I'm Asian! LOL. I'm one of the mutant Asians with very fine, naturally wavy hair...and it's not pretty wavy hair either. It just looks messy and disheveled all the time...The waves on my left side stick straight out like a flip and the waves on my right curl under. I have to blow dry my hair straight every d@mn day. I even asked my stylist about perming my hair so that the waves might look more "normal," but she just told me to put curl product in my hair to give it more uniformity.

Have you tried those really big velcro rollers? You can find them in the beauty section of any drugstore. All you need is like 9-12 of them, it takes no more than 10 minutes to put in. Just wash your hair, blow dry so it's semi-dry, put a dab of mousse in your hair, apply the rollers (roll AWAY from your face), lightly spray with hair spray, then blow-dry the heck out of your hair (set on high heat). Let the rollers cool in your hair for about 15-20 minutes, then remove. You will not believe the big, sexy waves that you'll have! And the waves will stay in all day!

hehe kristy -- I just wanted to post really quick that when my hair is just above my shoulders that my hair is straight but the bottom half of the hair on my right side flips outward and the hair on my left flips inward! :P

Isn''t it funny how hair does that??? My dad''s whole side of the family has crazy wavy hair (like Darryl Hannah in Splash) and my mom''s side has stick-straight hair. I got something right in the middle...ugh. Kinky all over with waves that have no real consistency....some parts are outright curly, other parts are straight-ish.

I am actually like snow_happy and want to get a perm for my wedding. I have super stright AND THIN hair that has no body in it at all. I was thinking to get a perm at least 2 months in advance of the wedding so the curls will become more natual by the wedding date. With waves in my hair then I can do a updo with "puffiness" in it.

Luckily I have had a few perms in my life and it does hold up. I do agree that it is damaging to the hair and you need to take extra care of it or it will go dry on you.

This is a harido that I like (maybe not so much on the pony part). As you can see without a perm it is near impossible to achieve this look on Asian straight hair.

I got a straight perm a few years ago to fix the strange curling at the ends of my hair (that looked like a big gust of wind and hairspray had molded my hair in one direction) and it''s supposed to be damaging for your hair. I had it done in Taiwan and my hair is just as healthy now as it was before the perm :P

I get my super curly/frizzy hair chemically straightened. I think if there are procedures to get my hair straight, there''s got to be something to get your hair curly.

How much time before your wedding? It''s too bad you can''t do a trial run like 12 months in advance, to be sure you won''t fry anything with no time to grow it back.

Kristy do one of your parents have curly/wavy hair too? Or did the wavy hair gene just 'magically' show up in you? I'm just wondering how common it is for Asians to have natural curls in their hair. I have very curly hair and my future husband is Chinese, so his and his family's hair is stick straight. I'm wondering if our kids will have a chance of having curls in their hair? I hope they do

Sunkist -- there is a very good chance that your kids will have curls, if you have very curly hair.

I've seen lots of Hapa kids with curls...they are gorgeous!

Yes, my father has wavy hair and so does almost everyone on his side of the family. My paternal grandmother had natural tight curls that she was very proud of. All her siblings had it too. Curly-headed Asians are fairly rare, but not unheard of. In my case, there is native aboriginal blood in the paternal side of my family (Taiwanese mountain aborigines...who are genetically related to the Polynesians) which explains it.

ETA: my husband has straight hair. My son has *slightly* wavy hair but my daughter so far shows no signs of wave at all.

heehee! Yes, it does look good

It''s beautiful! I didn''t know perms could be so soft and tousled looking like that. I really like it on you.

Looks great Snow Happy! Where did you end up getting it done? My cousin just got a perm done, and the ends look great...they actually kind of spiral on just the end for full, soft curls. I know some Koreans salons specialize in that type of perm.

It looks awsome snow!!! May I see the back?
