WB sticking out further than ERing?

Hello,

I am working with a jeweller to create an oval halo ring and a 3mm shared prong wedding band. In the cad the WB is sticking out further than the oval ring (Between fingers if that makes sense).
Jeweller has said he has to make the WB deeper to set the 3mm diamonds which is why it is sticking out. He said to have them more even I will need to come down to a 2mm/2.2mm diamond. I definitely want them the same depth, and don’t want the oval ring chunkier, just wondering if there is any way around this to get the 3mm. Anyone have this issue before?

Found this pic online to try and illustrate! It’s kind of like this but in reverse. My wedding band will be sticking out!

Can you post the CAD? You can eliminate some unnecessary height by making sure the setting is as low as possible with no airline, but the height of the band will be slightly higher than the depth of the diamonds. So a band with larger diamonds will be higher and wider than one with smaller diamonds. Did your jeweler say what size diamonds they are using for the band? Ten pointers (.10ct each) are approx 3mm round and 1.82mm deep, so the height of a band with ten pointers will be slightly more than 1.82mm to allow for the metalwork/setting. Five pointers (.05ct) are not as wide or deep at 2.39mm and a depth depth of 1.44mm.

Hey Kaycee2018, so This is from front on. You can see the way the WB sticks out. I just said I wanted 3mm diamonds I didn’t specify a point.

Here is the cads for both rings showing the MM’s.

I see what you’re saying. The height difference would bother me, I think. I’m not sure you can have the same height off the finger if the diamonds in each band are different sizes, unless you’re willing to build up the height of the oval ring band. These images show the depth differences of a 3mm vs 2/2.5 mm diamond, which it sounds like is the reason the wedding band is higher off the finger.

Could the jeweler build up the metal underneath the diamonds the oval ring? It would not look chunkier from the top, just the side. Or, would you consider not having round diamond side stones in the oval ring, which would minimize the visual difference in size between the rings and/or possibly allow a thicker band (height-wise) in the oval ring shank? The third option is the have the wedding band diamonds be the same size as the oval ring. I’m not sure any of these are what you want, but seem like solutions to me.

Hi dmack, thanks for the reply. I am actually getting rid of the round diamonds in the band of the oval ring the cad just hasn’t been updated.

I can understand what the jeweller is saying about it needing more dept to accommodate the diamonds but then I have seen pic of other 3mms with thinner erings and they don’t stick out as much so I’m hoping there is some other solution as I really want 3mm. See pic below there is a tiny difference But mine looks at lot bigger, although that might just be the cad!

Ah, ok. The prongs in your CAD look really prominent and I would ask the jeweler if those will be filed down during finishing. I suspect some of what you’re seeing might be the CAD effect and not how it will look in real life (reference the pic you attached where the prongs now sit below the level of the diamond).

I am a fanatic when it comes to matching outside diameters in a stack, so understand your dilema. Echoing what has already been said about changing the gauge/depth on your oval from 1.7mm to something like 2.1mm with a rounded top, but not knife edge, to keep it from feeling/looking heavy. The width of 2mm can stay the same.

You could also make the oval ring a half aize bigger too, and add pads inside to keep it from spinning. The larger size will automatically make the outside diameter of the ring larger.

I love the set btw, ovals are so elegant.

Agree with all the comments here - losing the diamonds on the e-ring is a good idea, then building up the depth should solve the problem. I always have my rings at 2mm thickness - occasionally more - so they line up with diamond bands, as differing circumferences send me NUTS.

If your wedding band is using 3mm stones, you should be able to get away with a depth of around 2.2mm. You *can* have your e-ring at 2.2mm depth (I've done it more than once), so they line up. It would be a great look.

Thanks everyone. He came back with a 2mm design that looked perfect with the oval ring but I don’t want 2mm so told him to go back to the drawing board ha ha.
He said the oval ring would be quiet chunky if I took it to a 2mm depth and looking at all the rings I have none of them are near that depth so he could be right!
he also said that the difference will not be as apparent as the pic I posted with the plain wedding band. That it will be more like the last picture I posted which I could live with so we will see.

I am definitely removing the round diamonds on the oval band So fingers crossed we can come up with some solution!

So we tweaked the setting and he was able to get it to a .02mm difference. Band will be 2mm oval ring will be 1.8mm which i am ok with. Cad looks much better! Round diamonds on the oval ring will be removed he just didn’t update on cad yet!

That latest CAD looks much better. I was going to post that my wedding band is taller than my ering by probably the amount you were going to have and it’s really not noticeable because it’s only when my fingers are splayed like this that you can tell. So it might not have been an issue. I’m glad he’s managed to do it properly tho!

Foxinsox thank you for that. The difference is not noticeable at all. Im hoping mine will be as slight as this and as you mentioned it’s probably only noticeable in static photos. I’m real life as rings move and spin im hoping it will be a non issue! As a side note your ring is beautiful and a similar design to mine with the baguettes!
