I just started my first "real" job post graduate school...I am a therapist at an all boys children''s home. It is a job that is very busy, lots of paperwork, home visits and therapy sessions. ANYWAYS, I started the job on Monday and I am freaking out about asking for a week off starting October 1st ( my wedding day) They know I am getting married then, but no one has asked/brought up the time off for honeymoon issue. I felt stupid mentioning it on my first day b/c I felt they would think i was "already thinking about time off on my first day". I want to mention it this week. I will have the days b/c we get 3 paid days off a month starting right away and we can accumlate them, so I will have 9, plus 2 comp days. So that is not a problem!!! Company policy is to ask 2 weeks in advance, so will I look dumb mentioning it now? Or should I tell them this week to give them a heads up???

Most employers appreciate you giving them as much notice as possible if you will be taking more than a few days off at once. That way they can plan for your absence. Someone else might be planning a vacation for that week themselves so I would think a lot of notice would give them time to accomodate for that.

I know of a couple of people that started new jobs right before a major event (wedding or new baby) and they told them right at their interview they would need time off right away. Their employers were happy they were upfront about it and willing to accomodate them.

I would mention it now -- it will be here before you know it and it''s one less thing for you to worry about.
