Hello All,

I ran across this site in an attempt to better educate myself in the world of diamonds and diamond jargon. I have read some of the postings, and even though I have learned much, it fails to compare to the wealth of knowledge that you folks have and I appreciate your insight and knowledge that you are willing to share. I have been happily married for almost 20 years and wanted to upgrade my wife’s solitaire stone for our 20th wedding anniversary. I had purchased a 1 ct J, I1 and due to money and lack of experience at that time, I now want to upgrade to a better quality stone. I am looking at a 1.54ct G-color and SI1 for clarity. It is a Round Brilliant cut and does not have a certificate but would like to know if a Brilliant cut is considered a good cut. It seems to be a beautiful stone with great color and clarity compared to the J/I1. My wife’s ring size is a 6 and wanted to get a feel from you if a 1.54 is a nice proportion to her hand. Thanks, Tom

tcuppa,

That''s a very lovely gesture on your part to upgrade your dw''s ring.
A RB is not considered a cut. It is a shape. For a good cut for a RB there are a set of parameters that will guide you to a super sparkler. A G SI1 would be a nice starting point and 1.5 ct is definitely not lacking in size. To start learning about constitutes a poor, good, very good, ideal cut, take some time to look through the tutorial here: http://diamonds.pricescope.com/

Hi Tom,

We really can't give you any information about the cut of the diamond without some statistics on it (depth, table, crown and pavilion angles etc.) The term "brilliant" really doesn't tell you anything about the diamond. It's just a description of the type of cut and how many facets the stone has. For example round diamonds can be "brilliant", "old european", "old miner's". Most round diamonds cut today are cut as round brilliants. My stone is a pear "brilliant", or simply just a pear shaped diamond.

Without a certification you'll need to decide if you trust you appraiser's judgement of the diamond. It may save you some money if you don't care about having a certification. If you are happy with the diamond and think the price is fair then go for it. It would be helpful if you have other diamonds of similar color, size and clarity to compare it too. Do a search here on PS to see if you are getting a fair price for a stone of that color, size and clarity as the range of stones that will come up here.

That''s Great info, I appreciate your reply''s. I will try and get the specifics about the ring and do a new post.
Is a G in color a very desirable colored stone by gals? Thanks again!

In a round shaped diamond, a well cut G faces up very white. A few people are color snobs and nothing but a D, E, and F will do but for most, G, H, I and even J''s are very white to us. As pearcrazy suggested, it''s a good idea to view a few diamonds yourself to see where your tolerance for colour lies. Put a F, G and H side by side upsidedown on a white paper (at the jeweler''s, of course) to see if you can see the difference. Then view them from the top to see if you can tell them apart. Most people can''t tell the difference.

I think that a G color and an eye clean SI1 sound fantastic. It sounds like the best blend of a nice white diamond and clean clear stone (provided you can't see anything without a loupe).

Best wishes and congratulations on your anniversary. I think it's very sweet that you're eagerly doing your homework as if you're popping the question for the first time. Still very much in love after 20 years- good for you!!

We have 2 boys, and I try very hard to set an example by outwardly showing affection and making my wife #1 in my life. I take my wife out on regular dates and want to be different than many guys that have been married for that length of time.
I have made reservations at a very nice restuarant in Atlanta GA as well as a Christmas Concert at the symphony for an early Christmas outing the week before Christmas. It is then that I plan on giving her a new stone. She will not be expecting anything a week before. Thanks, Tom

May I just say that you sound like an absolutely adorable man. The only thing that could top what you are proposing would be to include a love letter, too......But with or without one, she is going to be stunned and amazed at your thoughtfulness.

I have a size 5.5 finger and a diamond of that size and if it''s a sparkler, I am sure she will be thrilled.

Thank you for the very kind words, I do plan on a love letter as well. I am one of those Hallmark kinda guys!
You ladies have been very helpful. I thank you much!

This is simply wonderful. The most important thing you can do for your sons is give them an example of a good husband and a gentleman.

You are a super thoughtful man. I would LOVE a 1.54 G SI1 stone

I didn''t receive an engagement ring, and this year for our 15 year anniversary my husband suprised me with a diamond!!! He had put it on lay-away so I could decide if it was actually what I would like. I had the opportunity of finding this site and educating myself before we went to the jewelers and I actually ended up with a beautiful GIA Certified 1.12 I SI2 Round and I love it. It faces up white, has a great cut, sparkles like crazy, and the inclusion is set under a prong, so no bother to me and saved us $$$$. We set it in a 3 stone truffle setting with with two .30 matching rounds. I would have never believed that an "I" could look as colorless as a G-H, or that I would even consider an SI2, but I love it.

Welcome to Pricescope, you will find loads of information here and some incredibly knowledgeable people!! Happy stone hunting

You gals are too sweet, thanks for your comments.

Libster, that sounds like a beautiful story as well as the ring.

Thanks again for the feedback and information.

Tom

On Round stones of 1.5ct and greater, what is the most common prong setting 4 or 6?

I think 4 or 6 prongs is purely a matter of preference. I personally like the look of a 6 prong and extra security offered to the diamond if she should break a prong.

Thanks Pearcrazy, I just thought I would ask the experts. Thanks again for the info!
