Wedding Cake Question

Okay, I realize this may be a crazy question, but in your opinions, how important is it to have a wedding cake? I know it''s traditional and expected but I am wondering if it''s tacky not to have one. The place where we are having our reception supposedly has one of the top pastry chefs in the city. I''d almost rather put money into getting unusual deserts than a cake. Thoughts?

I think this is such a great idea. My fiance and I don''t want to have all the traditional garbage and I think he would prefer something like you''re suggesting. I would definitely try out the desserts and see how the presentation would be. Also, would the desserts be displayed as a cake would be? I would think about this, because people are so used to seeing a cake when they enter a reception. Cool idea, though. Keep me posted and if you have any pics, send them along.

I think that is a great idea, especailly if the pastries can be layered in a tier like a wedding cake. Very refreshing, IMHO!!!!

I don''t even LIKE cake, so if I can figure out a way not to waste money on one-- well, I definitely will! I like the exotic dessert idea... sounds fun!

If that''s what you want to do, go for it!! We had a combo of simple wedding cake and pastries, and I was so happy. More people talked about the pastries than the cake, that''s for sure. A tiered arrangement sounds cool!!

No question. I''d go for the pastries!! Sounds like an awesome ideal. Having some on a tiered platter would be pretty cool too.

My friend did that. She went to a fantastic bakery and got some kind of special little white individual cakes and placed them on the "cake table" and those were her and her husbands and then we all just ate FANTASTIC chocolate cake. We were all happy. And it looked sort of cool. Let me see if I can find a picture for you.

I am into non traditional desserts....however, I catered a wedding a few years ago and the guest went NUTS....complaining and bitching like you would not believe!!! all because the couple who had the wedding had ice''s...these really yummy sorbet thingys in all different flavors and shapes, really high end and gourmet...instead of cake. Everyone was asking "wheres the cake", it got REALLY annoying b/c we just catered not made the decision for no cake and the guests got NASTY

i say do whatever makes you happy. it is YOUR WEDDING after all. A good friend of mine didn''t have a cake, they had a B 52 coffee bar instead. It''s all about you so I think you should do what you want to do. Changing things up or adding or omitting things is what personalizes them also!

I just went to a wedding and they had a chocolate fountain. It was so different and fun! They had all different things that you could dip in the chocolate - marshmellows, bananas, rice krispy treats...the list went on and on. They also had a small cake siting there if anybody wanted that. The guests loved it!

Be careful that you buy a LOT of food to dip, see if you can supply stuff to add to what the fountain folks supply so you don''t run out. I went to a wedding about a month anda half ago that the company only supplied enough for 2 pieces of whatever per guest. When you have 300 guests, that''s not much. Some folks got nothing since they had only a small cake for the cutting and people snatched those up fast.

In bridal books Ive seen pastry cakes which have been displayed as a tier cake and it looks beautiful...Be Bold.

Also ive heard ( according to most caterers and wedding planners) that most guests rarey eat the wedding cake.
