What''s the average cost of a wedding dress in the US? I''ve checked out some websites but they don''t seem to quote a price and dresses in Europe cost thousands...

Really depends on what type of dress and which designer. Can range from mid 100''s to four and even five figures. Have you any particular styles, fabrics, designers in mind?

right now, Amanda''s style is top of my list

so I guess something along those lines but I don''t have a fabric or designer preference.

how much do you think something like this would cost? on the website it just says ''under $500'' but that''s not very specific...

My Casablanca dress was about $800. Prices vary greatly depending on the designer and even the part of the country you''re in.

Under $500 probably means $499

...I actually have no idea how much it is but it is a pretty dress.

tyty, even 499 is better than 2000 which is what it probably costs over here.

That dress is very similar to mine! I''d post pictures but I''m at work...

Mine is an alfred angelo, and I paid $1600 US, including alterations!

Beautiful dress!

Nov2109, please do post pics when you can

(I loooove your dress . You look lovely. I was wondering, and please feel free not to answer if this is inappropriate but, how much did it cost to make? And how did you find your seamstress? I''m wondering if it''s worth having something made in the US than just buying in Europe where everything is overpriced and mass-produced...)

Hey DVS! I got your comment over on my final fitting page! Thanks for the compliments- it''s really a gorgeous gown. I actually bought the dress at a local boutique (so I''m sure it may have been mass-produced), but it''s not a designer brand or anything- I don''t know who actually made it. I bought it straight off the rack at one of their rack & sample sales, so I didn''t even order it. It was too big when I bought it, but the seamstress I found took it in for me (she did not actually make the dress- just did the alterations).

I got the gown at 30% off, for just over $900 (US). (it was originally $1300)
The alterations were $175 (my seamstress charged $25/hour)

Hope that helps a bit! Try looking around bridal shops first to see if there''s anything you like. You may just surprise yourself (b/c I did!)

Thanks for the info, Amanda. I hope I find something as nice as yours

Yeah, the price range was huge when I looked. I decided in the end to just get it custom made. That way I could work in the sentimental details I wanted and be OCD about the materials, lol. It came to about 700$ including alterations etc.

is it easy to get someone to custom-make it for you? and how long did it take?

The AVERAGE cost of a dress in the states is approx $1200, according to a book I''ve been reading. Mine was a thousand. If you are looking for more affordable options, I''d look at the pre-owned wedding dress sites. You know that most of them are in great shape, they''ve only been worn for a day, and a lot of times, you can get a better price on a designer dress.

I spent more than I''d intended on mine. I wanted to be in the $600 range, but it was the first week it was released, so no deals

I think you can do pretty well if you find a designer on Etsy and have them make it. Has anyone done this? How''d it work out for you?

I had mine made at home in China, but even in the USA I think it''s easier than many think, it''s just a little nerve wracking since it''s not something you can try on to see if you like it. Mine took 3 months, but that was because of a lot of hand embroidering. But I''ve had friends order wedding-type dresses from skilled seamstresses which took a month or less.

DV where in Europe are you? I know what you mean about the dress prices here, I was worried I was going to have to get my dress here, luckily I found one in NY before I moved. If you are in the UK I know that another PS''er, Pandora I believe, had her dress made and it was a good process so maybe if you page her on the family board she could help point you to seamstresses.

I''m in the UK so even 1200 dollars on a dress sounds pretty cheap compared to what I''m seeing here.

Thanks for the Pandora suggestion! I''ll try to page her

Are places like bridemegamall and bridalmart worth considering or do they only sell badly-made knock-offs?

Hi Amanda. Sorry to be asking about this again, but what fabric is your dress made of? Is it taffetta or satin?
