What color was/ is your gown?
What color was the sample?
And if the sample was a different color were you worried?
Did the gown look very different in the color you ordered it in?

Two of the gowns I am considering have samples in colors other than white. I was thinking I wanted a white (silk white/ diamond white) gown-- but am wondering if the dresses will look too plain in white.

Did the gown look very different in the color you ordered it in?
--i wasn''t worried because white''s what i wanted in the beginning. the designer had other gowns in cream/gold combo. it was pretty too, and probably goes better with my champagne/mocha/chocolate brown/wine color scheme, but i just wanted white!

Jcrow-- see that's what's got me worried. I haven't seen Paloma gowns all white with alencon lace-- but I saw some other designer's gowns with it and well... while a couple were very nice-- some of them looked so ordinary and cheap in white. But I'm not sure if that's a result of the construction of those gowns (the construction wasn't as nice as the Paloma construction at all despite the higher price tag) or if it's really because the gowns look better in ivory-- or in ivory and pinky-taupe. I really didn't like the alencon in white on those gowns truth to tell. I could go ivory-- my coloring works fine with it. But FI and I compromised his suit to grey three piece with white shirt and gray tie (I wanted the tie to match the flowers-- he wanted a black suit). I don't know how the colors I'm leaning toward would work with ivory either. I'm a matchy matchy bride. Bright deep pink, VERY light pink and white.

Nevermind this pic. Just realized it has the wrong colors in it. No light pink. Too much red. Also I'm not TOO attached to the colors. I like them. But well... I've got about a hundred pics of flower arrangement pics that I like. I can be flexible.

I think a really blinding white can tend to look less expensive, depending on the fabric. Candlelight or off white can look a bit richer, and I think it is easier to wear, complexion wise, than bright white. I remade the dress I wore from a bright white taffeta to a white but more soft silk shantung and I thought it looked a lot better than the original dress. Less shiny and reflective to me.

I agree with diamondfan. My skin is on the fair-ish side with a hint of olive (weird, huh?), brown hair and brown eyes and ivory suits my skin tone/color so much better than white. I haven't 100% decided on a dress yet, but the one I'm leaning towards I'll be ordering in ivory/blue (blue sash).

Which gowns are you looking at? Just curious.

What color was/ is your gown? Ivory

What color was the sample? White

And if the sample was a different color were you worried? Not in the least....I had tried on enough dresses to know that ivory went better with my white skin tone than stark white did.

Did the gown look very different in the color you ordered it in? No......it looked beautiful.

Ancillary information: My husband wore a white shirt, and it looked totally fine - couldn''t even tell the difference.

More ancillary information: Woman at the bridal shop told me that, as a general rule, causasian women typically look better in off-white or ivory gowns - more complimentary to their skin tone. Latin or Asian women do better with white, again due to skin tone.

Final ancillary information: The brighter the white, the harder it will be to keep the dress from washing out in photographs. Cameras are calibrated to treat all objects as 18% grey. In order to correct for this, photographer has to overexpose a bit to make the dress look white in pictures. It''s a delicate balance, and if they overexpose, you lose detail (lace, beading, etc.). This is especially amplified if the groom wears very deep black with your very white dress. (So your grey choice helps choice).

I think ivory is better in general, just because I find few ppl look really good in stark white. Just softer.

DH got a white vest and shirt, I had an ivory dress. Did anyone notice? Nope. Did *I* even notice?? NOpe! And I''m a matching freak.

So, I say, don''t sweat it too much.

PS I think the gray suit w/dark and light pink and ivory/white flowers will look fantastic.

Well, as I''ve not even gone shopping yet (and 4 months engaged already?!) I was at first thinking of a dress in white. But our color scheme is wine/gold/ivory so now I''m thinking of ivory, hopefully with gold. I am dark haired, blue-black when it''s natural, but have a pale w/slight yellowish skin tone. I have light brown eyes, so I don''t know exactly will work for me.

I fell in love with another gown. One I hadn't tried on (until last Saturday!) but loved in pictures. I haven't made any final decisions yet....

Dress shopping is dangerous stuff.

I think dark pink, very light pink, grey and ivory would be a fantastic color combination. I also think a rum pink or a champagne gown would look gorgeous as well. I tried on a lace/silk Paloma in a gorgeous color...mocha, I think it was called. It was stunning and still very bridal. If the designer has gowns available in other rich colors like that, I'd definitely consider them.

Diamond White, and I bought the sample. I''m not much help either. :)

The way the store explained all the different kinds of white to me is that very few complexions actually look good in actual white. Diamond white is just off white (like candlelight) and looks great on many more skin tones and still looks white. Ivory looks very rich on lots of girls too. Have you tried on a dress from the designer you''re looking at in the color you''re thinking about? how did it look on your skin? Can you find or can the store give you pictures of the gown you''re looking for in the color you''re interested in? A swatch?

LMAO Ebree! One of the gown''s I''m considering is one of the Paloma Mocha/ lace/silk combinations. Considering it in Natural -- silk white, not WHITE white (that''s actually one I think will look fine in white because of the bow at the waist). I was considering a Paula Varsalona-- but it was at the top of my price range and with alterations and everything I couldn''t justify it-- especially since the quality wasn''t anywhere as nice as the (less expensive) Paloma''s. The other two are also Paloma gowns.
I think DF is absolutely right (HI DF!! Long time no talk will have to catch up soon!) about the fact that the gowns look richer in ivory or well... not white white. But the Natural color from Paloma isn''t TOO white (will confirm on Thursday though I''m trying on the gowns again though). As for coloring I''m light olive dark brown eyes and ''chestnut'' hair (naturally-- as I''m not planning on coloring before the wedding took me 2 years to grown out the color last time). DF says both white and ivory look equally good on me (he''s such a guy). I''m going to have to ask my BM what she thinks when we go down to TX at the end of the month and ask the bridal shop lady on Thursday. As for Ivory and grey... and ivory and the flowers. I''m going to bow to your tastes on that. GREAT info on the photography aljdewey! That''s of KEY imporance to me. THANKS ALL!
