Good morning/afternoon all,

Just ran a 5k along the beach this morning - the weather is beautiful here! The race started at 7:30 am. Now I am drinking a protein smoothie made with my new bullet!

Kimberly,

Was it you that had dinner with some girlfriends and did not want to share what they were eating? Can you please tell me how you ended up handling this matter? I did like someone''s suggestion of fibbing and saying you had birthday cake earlier in the day.

Thanks,

Meredith
Meredith (I love that name!),

It was me and I was going to say that I had eaten a large lunch and just wanted some soup as opposed to sharing appetizers but that''s not how it worked out(I am not currently working so eating birthday cake at work would not have worked for me!). One of the ladies, who used to be a junk food queen, has made some big changes in regards to eating and exercising and so she started talking about that and I simply slipped in that i had checked out nutrition values for the restaurant and the tortilla soup was a great option at 350 calories. It actually turned into a great conversation about eating healthily and exercising (the other lady is pretty fit and eats in moderation so she is more understanding).

Situations like this can be not so fun as people always like to give their two cents re: your eating habits: "Oh, it''s just one night it''s not a big deal" or "you don''t need to lose weight/watch what you eat" etc. But it turned out to be just fine.

Good luck!!

Thanks! Yeah situations like this have the potential to turn awkard or be really great as in your case!
Good Job,

Meredith

Ive had those situations before-they are very awkward when people keep hounding you to try stuff that you''re trying to avoid.

I started training today for the ladies mini marathon which takes place in Dublin on the first monday in June-I can run for nearly half an hour on the threamill but boy did 15 minutes of running nearly kill me outside! I didnt think there would be that much difference between running on the threadmill and outside.

Thanks for your nice words Kim! I don''t know why it is, people just seem to love to poke their five eggs in with a person''s menu when they are trying to lose weight or be healthy

I sometimes get comments from a friend even who mutters that I have lost too much weight and any more and I will look gaunt blah blah, I wouldn''t be anything other than encouraging to someone trying to do the same, I don''t get it....

I don''t understand it either, except that people might become uncomfortable with their own eating/health habits when they compare them to the people they surround themselves with.

When I trained for the 3Day there wasn''t a single training when my team didn''t tell me I needed to eat more, drink more. It was really frustrating as I wasn''t going to eat just to satisfy them and I didn''t feel that I should have to explain to them that I don''t think it''s healthy and good for me to constantly be snacking. And if we stopped for a lunch break they''d all order BLTs etc, and I''d get a salad and they''d start in on me all over again. It was really awkward.

I''m in your boat, I think it''s terrific when people do positive things for themselves and can''t imagine being anything but encouraging and helpful, but not all people think like you and I do, Lorelei! Isn''t that unforrtunate?

It''s scary though, as 2/3s of all US citizens are overweight. This didn''t happen through good choices and healthy habits!

I am vigorously nodding my head at every word you say Kim! As you say, so many people are overweight and do nothing to help themselves, yet all the time I get ' silently' accused of being boring, bulimic, anorexic, told outright I have lost too much weight and am not looking good by people who are supposed to be friends, it goes on and on. You can't win, carry a few more pounds than you should and you have to suffer comments for that, lose the weight and you still don't get any peace or even a simple well done.....I sometimes think some people find another's success threatening perhaps, as you say it makes them feel uncomfortable about their own eating habits.

The main thing is Hubby says I look d#mn good - I also feel good!

i hear ya gals on the whole people offering their two cents in, for the most part i just smile or whatever and change the subject but sometimes it is irritating. when greg's mom was visiting she made about 5 comments in the space of 3 days re: how i was so thin, didn't need to lose more weight, would disappear if i lost more, blah blah. oh and once she called me a 'bottomless pit' (irony?!) at dinner.

anyway, last nite we were out with friends and i was talking about how greg sometimes is ironic about telling me i'm 'getting too small' in one sentence then asking 'do you really want dessert' in another...and my friend was like 'oh you could stand to gain back a few lbs' and i was kind of like 'well i'm just not, so it won't happen' and she was like 'um oh okay'. i was like gosh just leave me alone! obviously i am HAPPY where i'm at or else i wouldn't be trying to stay here. she has also lost some weight and looks great, but she says she only has 3 more lbs to go whereas i think she could lose more like another 7ish and be really amazing, but that is MY opinion, not hers and i would never tell her 'oh you should stand to lose a few more than just 3'.

oh and it's also a pet peeve when people are like 'oh you don't need to lose weight' or 'you never needed to lose weight'...it's kind of like well thanks i guess for the ego boost but obviously i felt i did. hehee. it's just funny in general and i try not to take offense because people are trying to show they care, but sometimes i'm like just stuff it! why can't people just say 'well wonderful you look great!'...!

and LOL kimberly, but the restaurant we went to last time with our friends WAS claim jumper! i had forgotten the name til you said it. they love that place. and it DOES offer 1/2 portions of stuff, but still i'm sure it's so bad for you. i think last time i got a salad and a 1/2 baked potato with veggies or something and it was still a lot of food. our friends took a dessert home with them and it was like the size of the to-go container, aka 8x8! but they are skinny and never seem to gain weight amazingly! re the obesity, it's definitely happened over time, if you look back at portion sizes 20 years ago, they are typically 1/3 of what americans are served now. that is a huge huge contributor. but american's like to feel they are 'getting their money's worth'. i catch myself doing it too. 'oh $20 for 5 scallops? what a ripoff!'...but in reality that's what i should be eating! not 15 scallops badly done. hehee. but people i think are conditioned to think 'more for less' in general.

so breakfast this morning is cream of wheat with brown sugar and the 100 cal english muffins toasted crisp with a bit of smart balance and drizzles of honey. the feel on the english muffins is not quite as good as the original but pretty close. and for 1/2 the cals of the original, i'll take em!! i love thomas's english muffins...i was raised on them. it's been raining on and off, but greg and i want to take a walk/run later on this trail at the park so i hope it holds out rain for at least an hour or so for us to do that this afternoon. i would like to do my 45 minute 3m walk outside today! if it rains all day i guess i'll go to the gym later though i'm not super jazzed since i will be there tomorrow too and i wanted a break from indoor stuff, but we'll see.

have a great day everyone!!

There you go, that''s the person whose opinion (besides your own) matters most.

I agree with the reasons given on why people make comments about too much weight lost. The only time I have paid attention is when a male friend of mine, who is thin, and married to a thin woman, told me not to get any thinner. If a thin person says it, I feel like there''s no hidden reason for saying it, other than out of concern.

Of course, that was many years ago, and I wasn''t even trying to lose weight, just running after 3 boys. *sob* Almost makes me want little ones around again. lol

thanks lorelei!! i feel good about where i am at too! except i wish i could gain back a wee bit on my bootie but i guess beggars can''t be choosers. lol.

You really do look great Mara!! I know, it never goes from where you want it to will fat, I have bootie bones which I can feel if I sit on a hard chair! If I jump on Hubby's lap he squeals in agony now, because my ' butt bones' as he calls them hurt his delicate little legs!
41.gif

That is the main thing Ellen, is Hubby gloating about his trim wife, I know he would tell me if I wasn't looking good or too thin, but I think when you lose the weight the right way, you can avoid looking haggard etc which comes with drastic weight loss. I just wish folk would be pleased for me
8.gif
, I would be delighted for them...

John does the same thing as Greg, Mara. One minute it''s "you look fabulous" the next it''s "you''re getting too thin!" I''m like "make up your mind buddy!"

And Claim Jumper is the devil! I went there when they first started opening up in LA, so about 10 years ago or so. My aunt kept going on and on about it so we all went for dinner one night it was just so ICKY!

Anyways, point is, we all know that moderation and exercise is key and we''ve made good HEALTHY choices and that''s all that matters! So keep up the good work ladies and gents, in spite of the comments!

Something else I thought of, that I think can happen sometimes is, people get used to seeing us at a certain amout of weight, and then when we lose a good deal, it CAN almost look like we''re too thin, because they were just not used to seeing us thin.

That happened with my oldest. He was carrying a bit of extra weight, nothing horrible though. He decided to lose, and one day I said the same thing, you''re bordering on too thin. He reminded me he was only at what he weighed before the gain. And now that he''s stayed there for awhile, he really does look fine.

Well somehow I have already taken in 800 cals today and we're going out to dinner too. I plan on having not more than two Amstel Lights and the grilled chicken with vegetables so it shouldn't end up too bad. The top of my sparkpeople range is 1,680 but I try not to get anywhere near that high number.

This morning I worked out to the tune of 611 cals on the elliptical. I have found that I enjoy my lighter workouts (600-650 cals) much more and they go A LOT faster for me than the ones where I'm killing myself to get to (or close to) 700. I think I will try doing the workouts that I enjoy more and worry less about a few cals here and there and see if it makes any difference. Especially now that I'm getting in five a week for 3000+ cals.

I feel a little out of it today since I was up half the night writing a nasty e-mail to my jeweler. I actually woke up at midnight, lay awake until one, and then finally got out of bed and started typing at that point because I knew there would be no sleep for me anyway just lying there being mad. Then I had to get up again at 7:00. Hopefully we'll pack it in early after dinner and I can get a good night's sleep.

well today is an icky rainy day...i am debating driving to the gym (bah) to do something indoors or just waiting for a break in the rain to see if i can jet out for 45 minutes and do 3miles. but it's blah.

so my friend that we had been talking about meeting called us right before our tax appt and asked if we had gotten her email...i said no and apparently she had emailed 2 days ago saying let's meet up after our appt (we would be over right near their house). i said okay where. johnny rockets.
40.gif
UGH. at least it wasn't claim jumper, lol. i said well we are having a big dinner tonite so we'd prefer not to eat anything too heavy and she goes 'oh well then you can just have a MILKSHAKE'. i was like 'umm not exactly light'...but the area around there, i totally don't know it and she wasn't offering any other suggestions, and they have 2 kids so i know they like child friendly places, so i said 'okay sure'. finish getting ready and jet downstairs to look up johnny rockets online. lo and behold, nutritional info for their entire menu! whee! so i jot down the top 5 not-so-going-to-kill-me things and we head out for our appt. i ended up getting a child's burger (380 cals) and it comes with a kiddie fries (266 cals) which greg split with me....he had some sort of mushroom burger. i had a few sips of his coke (so sweet!) and drank water otherwise. overall it was way more than i wanted to eat for lunch AND at noon (on the weekends we typically don't have a lunch but snacks during the day so we save ourselves for dinner)...after eating breakfast at 10 am but at least it wasn't so bad. the most ironic thing is that the kiddie burger was the same size pattie as the regular burgers our friends got. i said are you sure this is the kiddie burger! she said yep. it was pretty yummy though, just the meat patty and relish, ketchup, mustard, lettuce, tomato and onions.

so since we had burgers for lunch, we are meeting my parents at their fave place (mexican) for dinner. last time i had the fiesta salad bowl thing but didn't eat the bowl...and i will have that again this time. it's really yummy, roasted chicken, beans, salsa, lots of lettuce and guac and sc on the side. and we get nachos typically. but yeah wasn't keen on having 2 'meals' today, and on the weekends i love snacking on cereal all day long so i was really looking fwd to doing that today, oh well!! plans change.

oh and on that same topic up above about people and weight, my mom calls me earlier and is like 'at the gym the other day your face looked gaunt, are you too thin'..i'm like MOM jeez...it was a thursday night after a workout, do you expect me to be like miss america? i was friggin tired! so she's like 'well you know other people see you differently than you see yourself'..yes mom! i wish she would just believe me when i say that the scale is the same weight basically as it was like a month ago and she thought i looked fine then (well actually then she told my dad she thought i was 'getting' too thin)...it's not like i dropped another 10 lbs and suddenly look gaunt. so now i am all paranoid..i kept asking greg if i looked gaunt and he was like no way. thanks mom! so i'm sure she will be monitoring what i eat tonite...gotta love parents.

on that note, i'm eating a blueberry muffin...hope everyone is having a wonderful day! have fun tonite deejay, don't be too strict with yourself...hehe.

Ah, the power of suggestion. Thanks to you, Sharon, and everyone else who raved about Indian food, John and I are going to an Indian restaurant for dinner tonight instead of the French restaurant we''d decided on yesterday! I mentioned butter chicken last night at dinner and this afternoon John says "since the storm that was supposed to hit has disappeared, do you want to go to Hillcrest for Indian food." Too funny! But I don''t know what naan and tikki and raita are, should I be doing an internet search? And they don''t have butter chicken according to their menu online!

Situations like this can be not so fun as people always like to give their two cents re: your eating habits: ''Oh, it''s just one night it''s not a big deal'' or ''you don''t need to lose weight/watch what you eat'' etc. But it turned out to be just fine.

Good luck!!

Thanks for your nice words Kim! I don''t know why it is, people just seem to love to poke their five eggs in with a person''s menu when they are trying to lose weight or be healthy

My thoughts exactly. We have these friends who don''t eat healthy, nor do they exercise and everytime we get together with them, they try to get us to eat things we simply don''t want to eat and they say we''ve lost too much weight, or we work too much at the gym. They''re also quite religious and almost daily they send me emails with religious content (they know we''re not religious) and how we need to pass the stupid thing to 10 friends this minute, blah blah blah. I know they mean well. They''re not homophobic, but I wish I could find a nice way to just ask them to stop sending the emails and stop trying to get us to eat more.

Checking in early. We just got home from a 3 hour workout. Neither of us felt like going into the gym this afternoon. I think we were both feeling a little blah. Partly because nothing good is going on with selling the condo in Tampa, and we''re tired of the transient lifestyle. And partly because I think something may have upset out tummies. But we went anyway and once we got going, we really got going. We did lot''s of free weights and all the other gym toys were available to us as well. Then, I got on the elliptical and I heard Ellen''s voice (or at least imagined her voice, since we''ve never spoken) and I just had an explosive session. I traveled 7.67 miles and burned 556 calories in 30 minutes!!! I just pushed as hard as I could. My heart rate still droped below 100 after about 20 minutes, but I guess that''s a good thing.

We''re heading out to a new restaurant we''ve heard good things about. It''s in a trendy area near downtown called the Five Points District and the restaurant is called The Point. I''ll let you know if the food was good later.

Hope you''re having a great Saturday!!

Rod

PS: Congrats on the 5K Merrijoy!!

I want to do one sometime this year myself!!

Rod, when your hr drops that low after 20 min, does it stay there for the rest of the cardio session, or just briefly? it''s happened to me too. 1st time it was when i checked my hr w/ the finger thing on the machine, and i thought it must be wrong. but then i started wearing my hr monitor and it happened again a few times. but i got nervous and slowed down a little and drank some water and it went back up--maybe the adrenaline from being nervous about it? do you know if this is normal?

my heart rate has never dropped past 100 when working out, but i have heard that if you do have a lower heart rate it has something to do with what great cardio shape you are in or something? however mine is always in my targeted range if not higher so i dunno. i will have to ask my dad about his heart rate since he is such the athlete!

so the weather and day are gray but there was a break so we said let's hit the trail. so we drove over 10 minutes and it's raining over there. yikes. we talked about going to the gym instead but greg wanted to run on the trail, he hates running on treadmills and stuff. anyway...we did it...45 minutes for me and 50 for him and it was raining, not raining, sprinkling, and pouring during that 45/50 minutes at any given point in time. we got pretty soaked so we came home, showered etc. but i am really glad we went out and did it. what is 45 minutes of discomfort for knowing that you reached a goal that you could have easily copped out on (couch looked so nice and warm and comfy vs going out!). so now we can rest on the couch after working out! i only burned 375 cals and my goal was 400 but it's better than nothing. tomorrow i'll do 525ish at the gym where it's dry inside, lol.

anyhow we're going to rest up for a while then meet my parents for dinner, hope everyone has a great evening and YUM kimberly. naan is basically just an indian bread. chicken tikka masala is really yummy, you might like that, it's just basically spiced chicken. greg loves spicy stuff like lamb vindaloo but i stick with chicken items, naan and the basic rice and if you like mango drinks, try the mango lassi, it's got mango and yogurt in it, it's sooo yummy. kind of like a dessert. and drink lots of water during your meal, the carby food always gets stuck in my throat!! indian is really not low-fat or low-cal in general but it's so good! have fun!

and rod kudos on the fab workout...and you too have fun tonite, yummy meals all around! congrats merri on the 5k too! we've got such the fit group around here, it's wonderful.

Ah, the power of suggestion. Thanks to you, Sharon, and everyone else who raved about Indian food, John and I are going to an Indian restaurant for dinner tonight instead of the French restaurant we''d decided on yesterday! I mentioned butter chicken last night at dinner and this afternoon John says ''since the storm that was supposed to hit has disappeared, do you want to go to Hillcrest for Indian food.'' Too funny! But I don''t know what naan and tikki and raita are, should I be doing an internet search? And they don''t have butter chicken according to their menu online!
HI:

lol Kimberly--you made me laugh. I wonder if your restaurant has a sampler you can try. Altho I could eat most anything on Indian menu''s, I am partial to butter chicken (but that can vary in quality from place to place too!). Happy dining!

cheers--Sharon

We are back from dinner and I was not SO bad. I had only one beer and ate half of my roasted chicken and asparagus, but then we went to The Chicago Chocolate Company. I had three chocolate covered malted milk balls and a small skim dark hot chocolate. You gotta live a little, right?

Off to bed; I''m exhausted!

We're back from dinner. It was a mixed bag. They're known for their buffalo wings, so we had some as an appetizer and they were absolutely perfect. Spicy hot, but not too spicy hot. Crispy and oozing with the right amount of spicy sauce and the blue cheese dipping sauce was loaded with nice big chunks of blue cheese. My meal, though was rather disappointing. I had the filet, which was cooked right, but it was tough and riddled with grissle (sp?). The grilled vegetables were cooked nicely, but were rather tasteless and the mashed potatoes (a huge portion of which I only ate a little) were fluffy, but lacked anything special about them. Charlie had a curry and chicken dish, which he liked, but I didn't taste it as I'm not fond of curry. We enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant (kind of old, ok.....really old and established feel), but we decided since the food was just so-so, we went to Starbucks for coffee and a bite size peice of dark chocolate. I don't think we'll be in a hurry to return to the restaurant, unless I get the urge to have some authenitc buffalo wings again.

Nejarb: Once my heart rate goes down, it does not go back to the higher level. I have to believe since this happens almost everytime I push realy really hard, my heart rate must be going to a lower level for real. And Mara, I'm going to believe it's because I've put so much effort into becoming aerobically fit that my heart is now in pretty darn good shape.

Mara: Congratulations on the workout. Sounds like the weather made it quite challenging. I only ran in the rain once, but it was pretty warm and pleasant when it did.

Hope everyone's loooking forward to a nice and healthy Sunday!

we're back from dinner as well and this place was awesome as usual. they pretty much know us and my family from going there so often (it's some of the best mexican food we have found!), but it's been a long time since we have been there, maybe about a month, and before that it was 2-3 months because their meals weren't really in my 'let's get fit' plan... it was really hard for me to go there and not get the favorites i just loved...aka lots of beans, rice, sour cream and then a pork tamale and cheese enchilada! but the last time i went i was pretty good, and this time i decided to experiment further and get chicken soft tacos in flour tortillas. they came with just chicken and the healthy kind of loose beans (blanking on the name now)..oh pintos...so i made my tacos with those two things and then fresh salsa, some shredded lettuce, a bit of cheese, and then i dipped into sour cream and guac as i went along. greg had refried beans which i love mixed with rice and sc so i snitched a bit off his plate. and the tacos were really yummy! and overall wasn't full, which was funny because in the old days i'd eat the whole plate of whatever i got and be STUFFED FULL, i am sure a whole serving of rice and beans had something to do with it but because i just sampled off greg's plate, i felt okay. oh and we got their nachos which are yummy and made in a baked manner, i posted the recipe on the healthy thread...i doubt they use 2% cheddar and lowfat sc but with all 5 of us we don't get much of a portion. hehee. and last time i asked and they make their beans with evoo and not lard which is a huge plus, since apparently a lot of places still use lard!

i'm craving something sweet for dessert but don't know what, maybe a chocolate biscotti. before dinner i had a 60 cal yogurt smoothie and a multi-grain waffle sprayed with some smart balance for snacks as i was hungry between our workout and dinner. it's definitely been an eating day but i feel good, i'm not even stuffed, so maybe my body is happy. hehee. have a great rest of the eve everyone, sunday is our last weekend day, boo!!

rod don't you hate it when you are anticipating a good meal and it's just so-so? there are so many wonderful places to eat, i always feel somehow cheated a bit when we end up eating at one that is not up to par. i always think 'gosh we coulda gone to XYZ where we know we'll have a fabulous meal!'...hehe. anyway sounds like sbucks made up for it. DJ congrats on being good tonite!!

Indian food is very popular here in the UK, it has to be an occasional treat though as lots of oil is used to bring out the flavour of the spices. Naan bread is yum, a flat bread similar to a pitta but with a slight yeasty taste, onion bhajis are delightful, onions deep fried in a sort of curry flavoured floury batter, they come out in little lumps of crisp deliciousness! I love Indian food, but don't indulge often.

Dee - you are doing so well!!

Thank you Ellen! You could have a point with what you said!

Rod I hope you feel better today and it sounds like you had an incredible workout! Hang in there with the condo, it will all work out!

Did 40 mins treadmill and 15 mins weights last night.

Thank you all to the congrats on the 5K. That really makes me smile. I ran a 5K last Saturday, too. This is definitely the season for them - you can probably find at least 2 to do every weekend. And it is really nice to support the causes you are running/walking for.
Last week I did the 5K - but it had 2 bridges in it - in 37 minutes - this weeks 5K along the beach with no bridges I did in 35 minutes - but I will have to see what the timer on my leg said because I think it was actually closer to 34 minutes. (I walk for about 2 - 3 minutes in this time span and run the rest).
I am thinking of maybe training for the half marathon again next January!

Congrats to all on your workouts!

Meredith

, congratulations on your achievements - I couldn''t run 5 metres let alone what you do! Coda runs halves and marathons too, so we have another runner too along with Kimberley! I am glad too you are enjoying your energy drinks from your Magic Bullet - did Dee ever end up getting one?

Merrijoy: Kudos on the 5Ks! You''re a champion runner!!!

So we went to Bombay last night, it has a great reputation (supposedly one of the top 5 Indian restaurants on the west coast), and it certainly lived up to the high praise it''s recieved. The decor was beautiful, there''s a waterfall in the middle of the restaurant from ceiling to floor -- I told John I want one in our living room! -- and the food was even better (I love pretty restaurants). We started off with naan and hummus. For dinner i had chicken curry vindaloo with a small portion of rice (1/3 cup). It was truly fantastic! Then for dessert we split mango mousse, I am not usually a fan of mousse, but this was so light and creamy and refreshing, in other words DELICIOUS! And I saw a first last night, there was a flat screen television in the woman''s restroom. I was totally befuddled! And this poor older woman couldn''t get the automatic sink to work properly and when she did she managed to spray herself, her jacket lapel was soaked and I felt so bad for her!

So this morning I did a google search to estimate my calories and the estimates I''ve found on chicken vindaloo aren''t that terrible. I ate about 2/3 a cup and everything I''ve read estimates about 250 calories. But of course it''s cooked at a restaurant, so I''m doubling this and assuming i ate about 500 calories. I think I''ll attempt to make it at home it was so good!

So thanks, Sharon for the tip, it was well worth the adventure! We had so much fun and John enjoyed it even more than I did (he''s had Indian food many times, but it had been quite some time). But there was no butter chicken on the menu.

Today is a workout day, just me and my elliptical! Perhaps the storm that didn''t show up yesterday will today as it looks pretty icky out, but the clouds are high. We shall see!

Happy Sunday everyone!

I am a sporadic runner. Up until I moved to San Diego I ran 5 miles 4 times a week. I ran a bit after I moved and then stopped to train for my walk (I, like you, have a bad back and I don''t think it could have handled both long distance walking and my usual runs). I''ve toyed with the idea of taking it up again, and have run a few times but nothing serious. I am doing about as well with it as I am lifting weights and doing core work. I wish I could force myself to do these things on a regular basis! My body would be most appreciative.

I wish I could run more, Hubby thinks it is a confidence thing for me, as I was always the slowest kid at school with running

A bad back makes it much harder to do these things, but we do well Kim when you consider the amount of people who make a fuss about the pain all the time and don''t even try - maybe we inspire others to try out exercise. I might have a wonky spine and pain which I can never be free from, but I will be d*mned if I will be unfit, overweight and a general flabberlanch with it!
