lol: "I think that's creepy," a woman said in the report.

How does she know for sure that it was her husband's ashes they used?

Sounds a little wacky to me.

It does sound a little weird but overall, I think it is rather unique. Call me odd if it makes you any happier but how is that weirder than keeping an urn filled with ashes at home? I wouldn't spend $2500 to do it but hey, whatever rocks your boat.

Disturbing.

(insert jewelry store name) brings you the coveted "Cadaver Diamond"

what's even creepier about this is that you can't just show up at their lab with an urn. the normal cremation process burns all the carbon out of the body, leaving nothing for the diamond. you have to have the remains cremated through their patented process (at one of their "participating funeral homes") that basically turns the body into a big chunk of charcoal, which they then render down and purify to use in the diamond press.

the company has been around about a year or so. from what i've heard, this has been somewhat more popular for pets than for people, though, which i can understand.

I guess we all have to go... i wouldn't mind being turned into a pretty sparkly instead of worm feed

Not a bad idea.

Just kidding

The real question is, can any husband be turned in to a flawless diamond? Something tells me that most wives would say no (my wife excluded, of course....)

The company that uses the ashes has raised many suspicions about whether or not it is legit. They were able to get the Today Show, Good Morning America, newspapers, etc to run free publicity for them. THere are many problems with their story. First, the claim to be able to supply whatever size or color diamond that you request from grandpa's ashes. Anyone who had had any experience with synthetic diamond growth knows that it is not as easy as picking a crayon color and making any size you wish like a cookie. Second problem is that you could order sizes that are not able to be created yet. Third problem is that the money is so far out of normal ranges. $2000 for a 1/4 ct white diamond. Most people in the business suspect that lawsuits will come soon.

My darling husband just informed me there is a movie in the making called something like The Diamond Machine about this very thing -- making bodies into diamonds. Eeewwwwww. For some reason it makes me think of that 1970s movie Soylent Green. Am I the only one who remembers that creepy one?

Soylent Green: "It's made from people!!!!!"

EWWWWWWWW. I wonder if people go around talking to the diamond and stuff like Anna Nicole Smith did to her late husband's ashes?

"I miss you honey but everytime my ring sparkles I think of you.."

wacko.gif

lol...anna nicole was basically talking to diamonds when she talked to his ashes...he was worth that much!

That's not what I understood; from what I read, they produce diamonds in (shades of) yellow, because of the nitrogen in the air. I did not read that other colors were available.

I wouldn't do it for a person, but I might for my pets.

If the lady were to decide to sell her "lab-created" diamond, would an expert be able to tell that it was created from the ashes of a dead guy?

as far as i know, no. the only thing i can think of that might work would be testing to determine carbon-14 content, and i think you would need to destroy the diamond to run the test.

Someone says, Nice ring, did you get that from your husband? are you to reply, No, it is my husband.
rolleyes.gif

The company has now backed off the claim of some colors, but still has the claim that you can get up to 50 1 ct diamonds from each body. If you talk to the leaders of the lab grown industry like Gemesis, there are huge problems with this claim. I have no problem with growing diamonds in a lab, GE has been working on it since the 50's. I just really have a problem with scams and I think this item needs much investigating.

I think I'll add to my will - "Wife is NOT allowed to make my body into a diamond"....

my father and step-mother were visiting this weekend and asked me about this thing. my step-mother (who is about 15 years younger than him) was joking about doing it to him since, when you think about it, it's a lot cheaper than a funeral.

Ya know, with all the gold fillings and crowns, she could probably get a whole ring out of me....
