Hi Everyone, I bought a 3.24 J IF ACA diamond about 18 months ago. I had upgraded from a 1.81 I VS1 from Blue Nile. I couldn't be happier with the performance of the ACA vs the Blue Nile stone (despite it having super ideal proportions). I've also been completely satisfied with the J color - I must not be color sensitive, or the diamond just performs so well I don't notice the color.

I now want something a little bigger (I can't help myself!) and have selected the 4.23 J VS1.

My current setting is a platinum "Elegant" six prong. It's been recommended I get a new setting rather than just replace the head. I'm leaning towards a pave band this time, still with a 6 prong head (high set) and possibly yellow gold.

Would love some thoughts on this - suggestions for a setting from WF? Pave band with J colored stone- yay or nay? Yellow gold band with white gold head for J colored stone? Advice from others with similar color/size diamonds?

I'm a yes on the yellow gold...are you ok with a 4 prong or do you need a 6 prong. Its a really big stone!
I really like this setting. I wonder if they can do it with a different 6 prong head?
Never mind, I just saw that it looks like they can (custom). I would probably ask for smaller prongs.

Do you have a wedding band you are trying to use (or match). That would make a difference.

Congrats on your new upgrade!

Hi, I will need a new wedding band to match (my current one is just a very thin, plain white gold band). So no issues trying to match anything, but I prefer the diamond to sit up high enough that a regular band can sit flush.

I definitely want a 6 prong - I just think its more secure. I lean towards thin, delicate bands, but also not sure if I have to worry about it being top heavy. My 3ct in the elegant setting was fine and that was fairly thin.

Oh what a beautiful stone!!

The upside is that you could glue it onto your finger and it would look stunning, so there are no "bad" choices really

One thing to note about pave - I have a 4ct J, and to my eyes there is a clear apparent colour difference between regular melee and such a large J. So if you're sensitive to differences in colour that might be something to consider.

I wonder if WF would be able to source lower colour melee? Melee in the I/J or J/K range would be a better match for the J centre stone imo.

to the OP - it’s a gorgeous stone and will look lovely in either a two tone setting like your preference, or in an all WG setting! I don’t think you can go wrong. Also, sizing beads tend to help with spin.

Another thought to consider. If you are getting a new wedding band and a new setting, would it make sense to maybe go custom? There have been some people recently that felt like workmanship on settings was a little bit clunkier and prongs were larger, etc. than desired.

Maybe it makes sense to have someone custom make the setting if you want to make sure that it's just right?

Have WF make an 8 prong for you to give you a little more girdle coverage for a bigger girl. Can't wait to see your new upgrade. A 4 carat ACA will be blinding!

They definitely can source lower coloured melee but the "bright white dot" effect is more a function of RB light return in these tiny sizes than it is actual body colour - the lower coloured melee will still look like bright white dots unfortunately! Single cut melee is my go-to solution. I'm not sure if that's something that WF could do.
Edit - here's a thread with some more discussion:

I generally prefer a plain shank with a large lower-coloured diamond, though.

Hey, thanks, this was helpful information.

Thanks for everyone's input. I feel I need to see the new stone in person and try on some wedding sets locally. It's not just the color of the melee in the e-ring, but also the matching wedding band that I'm worried about.

I'm going to have them set it in a classic 6 prong as a temporary setting until I can find the perfect setting - or have something made. At least I'll be able to wear the new beauty without rushing the decision.
