Hey Everyone,

I started lurking here as I began the search for the perfect engagement ring diamond. Ultimately, this site lead me to a WF ACA diamond instead of a brick and mortar store. I wasn't overly impressed with WF settings though and liked the idea of a local place setting the diamond in a semi custom piece.

The concern: With bringing in an outside diamond (WF ACA 1.16 ct I VS2 [AGS 104116509026], the jeweler is only willing to give me their warranty if I buy the diamond from them as well. They were willing to price match a HoF 1.22 ct K S1 [AGS 104105100002] diamond. Albeit beautiful, I personally could see the warmth in the color in the store.

My question is: The jeweler (obviously trying to make a sell) tried to tell me the hearts on fire diamond is a $14,000 and I was kinda insane not to switch. Would you guys personally give up the higher rated diamond purely for a service plant?

Thanks in advanced!

I’d personally buy the ACA and then have a jeweler like DK set it if you really prefer WF not make your setting. Although, I thought they did custom work? $14k for 1.2 ct K SI1 diamond?? You can get a 1.7 or 1.8 ct K SI1 ACA for less than that…

No, absolutely not! An I VS2 is not a comparable for a K SI1 diamond. You can always buy a setting and have a ring serviced or cleaned by any reputable jeweler. If you could see the tint in the store, you will always see the tint. Don’t be fooled or pressured by his tactics. You can always get the diamond set in a simple solitaire setting and shop around for another setting.

Exactly. WF has these specs for sale for around 5k.....

I would reach out to WF and see if they can do something custom for you. They’re super nice and never make you feel like you’re bothering them by inquiring…

FWIW - many of us have ACAs set in non-WF settings. I take mine to a 3rd jeweler (not WF and not the one who did the setting) when I need stuff done. It’s no biggie. I do have it insured though.

On another note, I would rather put more money into the diamond than a setting. That’s my personal opinion and it might not be yours but you can always reset down the road. Of course with Whiteflash you always have the option of trading in for a larger diamond down the road as well. I am just in the bigger diamond, less setting. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Never!!!!! You’re never gonna get a diamond as beautiful as one from WF. Many jewelers would be happy to set your beautiful diamond! David Klass, Caysie Van Bebber…. So many options! The diamond you picked out will blow all others out of the water

I agree with the others, a 1.16 I VS2 is a higher-valued diamond than a 1.22 K SI1. There is no way I would switch to the HOF.

HOF also known as wallet on fire while for the most part well cut is no better cut than the ACA line from WF.
It would be a big step down to go with the hof.
Sideways at best on cut and much lower on everything else.

$14k for a 1.22 K is insane!

ACAs are AGS000 Ideal cuts with all the images to prove it. They are also H&A (with the images to prove it).

What type of setting were you looking at/wanting?

on top of all previous advice regarding comparing the diamonds.

what does their warranty detail, meaning what value do you anticipate getting from it?
long and short term?

Hi and welcome to PriceScope, Detroitman30!

The part i would be missing will be re-tipping prongs, free re-sizing, etc. Sounds like i might shop around with another jeweler, or just pay for those items out of pocket.

You guys are the best. Thank you for giving me piece of mind!

Re-tipping prongs and resizing are things you might never need - or at least not often. Don’t be swayed by that foolishness - neither of those items are that expensive to have done.

No, I would not. and agree, you may never need re-tipping or re-sizing and if you do, they are short money and you can take it to any good jeweler if that work is needed. I'd go with WF and if they don't have a setting you like, have someone make one for you.

What's your overall budget for diamond and setting, together?
Do you have pictures to the setting that you found?

Agree by having your budget and idea of the setting you envision, more advices can be provided~ Congrats on your engagement:)

Just my opinion, having WF set the stone allow you a one stop purchase. Less hassle. No need to insure the stone by yourself or the other setters. And WF are generally capable of custom making settings on top of their extensive list of ring models from either in house or other suppliers.

But it’s also understood you may want to do the setting elsewhere if there’s a very particular idea and aesthetic in your mind that you simply can’t find anything similar in WF list. If this is the case, we will be happy to know more and help, with some inspiration pics. There are several reputable vendors already mentioned in the thread. For example, DK, especially good if you have a very specific design in mind, that would even be better if you already have a good vision in things like specs, proportions, that DK is claimed to be really good to make it in real life, and he’s ok to provide multiple CADs. Or if you prefer to simply offer a general concept as a start of the project, and leave the rest to the ring maker, then some other vendors who’s more into a designer role would suit better.

CBI used to send the stones they rejected, the ones that didn't meet their standards, to HoF.

OP
Many on this forum are WF fanboys, some for good reason, their ACA’s are quite nice. When I was in the Caribbean one year I held a 2ct HOF diamond, I have never seen a diamond sparkle as much and not one since. I am no expert on this, let me get that out right away. But to the eye, it was a wow! HOF has a patented cut, that is why they sparkle so much. I believe that purchasing a diamond falls into the age old rule, “you get what you pay for”. Unfortunately, there are no deals. Good luck.

HOF has a patented ‘Dream Cut Diamond’ which is a specialty cut. That is not a round brilliant cut diamond. Their prices are somewhat outrageous; in my opinion it is marketing hype. That is why they have been dubbed Wallets on Fire. That is not to say that they aren’t pretty diamonds; I personally prefer Whiteflash and their stringent cut quality. I know exactly what I am buying and having owned nine of them over time, I see the same excellence in their cut quality. There are no deals on super ideal cut diamonds but dollar for dollar, I will always choose vendors that produce the super ideal cuts.

I agree. I think their dream cut is actually interesting (from what I've seen), but I wouldnt pay the premium for it. And their RBs certainly are held to standards like WF
