What am I looking for in a pink tourmaline?

Hi folks, I love pink! I am choosing between 2 rings, same settings but 2 different oink tourmalines. One is a little darker pink, more raspberry toned and the other is a bit lighter, and at times a touch of coral.
This one is a brighter raspberry toned...

And this one is a bit lighter but still very pretty pink...

They are both very pretty. And the .45 ct diamond halo really makes it a blingy cocktail ring. The tourmalines are 8mm cushions.
So what do yall think? What are the qualities one looks for in a pink tourmaline? Thanks for looking and helping me choose. :wavey:

They look brownish to me, which is not indicative of a good quality pink tourmaline. It should stay pink in all kinds of lighting whether it’s sunlight, fluorescent or incandescent.

Ok thanks TL! The pictures are not very good. I think the second one has brownish tone IRL. The first one sometimes is a darker raspberry and other lighting a brighter pink. Thanks for your tips!

I do not see anything this pink around much - Pala is famous for this colour.

That Litnon bubblegum pink is extremely rare for pink tourmaline. You can find Nigerian material like that as well, but it’s rare.

Neither tourmaline looks pink to me. The primary color I see is brown.

Hello (: Others here have shared my same sentiment; that to be honest I don't see much "pink" in these gems.
I personally prefer pink tourmalines that are more Barbie pink and less red, raspberry, or brownish-sunset red in color.

Also, even though you asked and wanted everyone's opinion about the quality and color of these two, just remember that when it comes down to it you will be the only one living in and enjoying these rings.

Lastly, there is perceived beauty and then there is classification, so others commenting may have found your stones to be beautiful but do not consider them to technically be pink tourmaline.
Good luck and enjoy the "hunt"! :P2

P.s- I do love that setting though! It's blingtastic!
& if I had to pick, I personally would choose the top one.

Yes, neither are pure pink. The second one looks like it may be pretty in person. I would call that peachy-pink. If you're into that color, it may be worth checking out. The first one is overdark and looks like it would black out in most lighting environments.

If you want pure link, the Litnon one posted by @AV_ would be a good choice.

You are helping me so much. I do love the true pink. It looks like I am going to go the custom route and buy the stone and then have it set.

I do love the bubblegum pink! And that's good to know it's rare. Now to decide between pink tourmaline, pink sapphire or pink spinel?!

I hear you. They both have a little brown at times. I'm returning them today. No settling for things not perfect. They were a great price at Costco and that's what intrigued me and the raspberry pink. It was 1000 for the ring, I really don't even know if that was a good deal or not?

If you like the baby pink/bubblegum pink color, consider Afgan tourmalines in addition to the stones from Pala. Afganistan also produces some beautiful baby pink tourmalines. This one is already sold (his stones sell incredibly quickly) but this is a great example of a baby pink Afgan tourmaline with just a bit of orange:

Thanks garnet girl! You bring up good points. Yes the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I really want a pinky pink. Unless yall think 1000 is good enough deal to keep 1 of the rings. I'm thinking buy the dream pink stone and have fun getting it set, and that will ultimately make me most happy. Thanks for your input.

Omg that one is soo pretty!!!

Guess it depends on the quality of the setting itself, but I would be inclined to say no, those rings are not a good deal. There's a huge glut of peachy-pink tourmalines coming out of Congo now. Even for top specimens with precision cutting and great crystal (which these two stones definitely don't possess), you shouldn't be paying too much more than $100/ct ($150/ct tops) for that color. For the two stones in these Costco rings, I would say they're worth maybe $50/ct at most. More likely $25/ct.

For a top quality, pure pink color tourmaline with good crystal, be prepared to pay minimum $150/ct, and most likely in the $200-300/ct range, for a 2-3 carat stone (which I assume is what you're after since the rings you posted have 8mm center stones).

Tourmaline also isn't great for everyday wear. It' gets both dull and dirty pretty quickly if you wear it often and work with your hands.

Not to mention there is no UV fluorescence as there is in some pink spinel or sapphire. It is the most budget friendly option though.

I agree and I noticed that for the few days I wore them. I think I will be happier in long run with pink sapphire or pink spinel.

So are sapphire or spinel more sparkly?
