Some of you already read that our wedding cakes are going to be in the shape of two of the temples at Tikal. So, here''s the big question... what color are temple cakes??

As the temples stand ''in real life'' now they are gray. They probably used to be red. At one point they were covered by thick trees. And who knows what else.

We are thinking that the cakes will be on the same platter facing each other, with some kind of greenery in between. And, our first thought is that red icing is a BIG no no at a wedding reception. (Side note: my dear Jonathan made me a chocolate pyramid cake once with red icing- for which he used and ENTIRE tube of food coloring! Let me tell you, it''s hard to get the pink off your teeth...) So, we are leaning toward a neutral color. My sister in law, the cake baker galore, suggested maybe a buttercream "beige" icing. She said this could also have a chocolate flavor to it?

I have not been to any cake tastings, so I don''t even know what choices I really even have to choose from. Are there any favorite flavors out there? And would you eat a beige cake??

The cake can be any flavor/color you want, the icing is what should be colored... and i think the grey or beige would be great. I think people will be more open to eating it (funky color and all) because its a replica of something and not just a round cake, know what i mean?

I agree with the red (ive stained tongues before! and think of your dress!!!) and also whatever goes into making the red color often has a bitter taste for me. Some people notice the bitter and some dont, so i would stay away just to be on the safe side.

We are having just plain ol'' yellow cake and white icing for the main cake and then a chocolate grooms cake.

PS - i cant wait to see pictures of this cake!!!

There are not too many colors I won''t eat

But seriously, for a wedding cake, unless it''s a dark chocolate, keep it neutral and not crazy like red b/c that''s just not appealing to eat. A nice chocolate or almond or mocha flavor.

And pretty cool looking too.

Red velvet is red on the outside???? Duh. I always thought there was some berry thing going on inside!

Oh duh, no it's on the inside. That's my bad. I thought that's what you were talking about. I didn't read the whole thread.

Thanks for that link, btw. That place looks awesome. If we do a DW, it'll only be me, him, and our families. Probably do a party/reception thing when we get back. I don't know. I don't know what to do....

NO RED on Tikal Temple cake! Eck!

I think a grey or beige cake would be pretty with LOTS of icing shaped into vines/greenery all swirling around the cake! Simple flavor like vanilla would be nice. The last wedding I went to had vanilla cream frosting on the outside and chocolate on the inside. I don't think this was the prettiest of combinations. White/cream inside and out is fresh and yummy!

There is NO color I wouldn''t eat! I''m picky about flavors, but color is a non-issue to me. As long as the cake & icing taste great, you should make them whatever color you want!

I don''t think anyone will have a problem since it is a theme cake and its not something arbitrarily chosen. I guess I''d go with a light gray though.

Thank you for all your feedback! I was afraid gray or brown might not be too appealing...

I will definitly post a picture after the wedding!
