What could cause this prong damage?

Something is wrong with the prongs on my ring. All 4 of them are eating away from the base. All of them to various degrees. Slowly progressing up the prong. I won’t wear it. I Remember thinking there was dirt on one of the prongs not that long after I got the ring but I wear glasses and it was too small to see then so I I figured it was dirty. I’m going to email David and arrange for repair but I do not understand what would cause this. I could have damaged them but why all 4 in the same place like that. I’ve had the ring a little over a year now and it’s not happening to my band.
I’ve been procrastinating sending it out because I was going to be in New York and thought I would be able to bring them in person but the schedule ended up being too much with trying to visit both my family and my husbands.

Also, if the stone has to come out for repair, would you just pay the money to send it to GIA? it was never graded and sold as a fancy greenish gray or possibly grayish green. I’m kinda curious but that would be mostly the reason for doing it.

I can’t see much from your picture ( no judgment! I know how hard they are to take!)
if you look with a loupe-
do you perchance see pitting ( instead of ‘damage’ ) there?
it’s rose gold, right?
any pitting (or whatever this is) that looks similar anywhere elsewhere on the ring?

I do agree it’d be a strange location for all 4 prongs to receive damage from wear like you are describing.

Is that any better? I’m not sure what putting looks like but it’s like a hole that got bigger and bigger. Yes, rose gold.

‘holes’ that appear and get bigger, do make me uneducatedly guess at pitting/porosity issue.
I’ll be interested to hear what you find out from the vendor!

best wishes and hope it’s resolved asap!

Thank you. It is really hard to get a clear shot.

your other question - IMO
if I could justify to myself the additional costs involved in getting a GIA report as well spent entertainment value in the $splurge
the answer is yes.

if the report could ever make me question or love the stone less - with an unexpected color label result not stating greenish anywhere
the answer is no.

Thank you for the response. I don’t care what the report says, I see green and it wouldn’t make me like my stone any less If GIA called it straight gray. I’m just curious really. I guess it would depend on the cost.

Do you swim / use chlorinated pools or tubs regularly...? I've read that this can cause some of the metals alloyed with gold to disintegrate over repeated exposure.

No, I don’t.

Also, I forgot to answer one of your questions. The prongs are the only place this is happening. So weird.

Trying to get a better photo when I loupe the inside of the band there’s a lot of little black pin holes that you can’t see with the naked eye so @Rfisher you might be right

I’m not seeing what you’re talking about in the picture but your description sounds like a porosity issue. Maybe even just cleaning. If it’s convenient, and maybe even if it’s not, I would start by talking to your jeweler who set it and let them look at it in person. Sometimes this is easy, sometimes not. The difference seems important.

Hi all!
SandraLynn- I think I’m the jeweler here…. please contact me via email to sort everything out.
Like Neil, I can’t see damage in the pics.
