What do the pie references mean?

Okay, so I have searched in vain for some sort of explanation of the pie references I have seen so often on PS. What does it mean when someone suddenly talks about pie? I have seen it in the context of some heated posts and have taken the reference to mean that everyone should cool down, change topic, etc., but I have also seen some more random references to pie that I didn''t understand at all. I keep feeling like I''m out of an inside joke, so I had to ask. Sorry to be so out of the loop!

Any explanations/links to explanations would be appreciated! (Maybe I should''ve posted this in Hangout...but I feel like I know the LIWs so much better and didn''t feel as bad asking you all a dumb question.)

Aljdewey (who now posts as AlisonD for Whiteflash) started it.

Years ago, there was a heated thread about diamond color preferences. Some couldn''t believe that people might actually prefer a warmer colored diamond. Different types of pie was brought in as analogy. The thread digressed into dessert heaven.

Since then, yes, it is a peacemaking, "let''s not get too serious about this" token.

I was trying to end that thread before it got any worse. Often times I''ve seen threads put to pie when the argument is out of control, redundant or (in some instances) starts to become too personal.

I felt like an utterly horrific human being and I was trying to make amends to the Universe for my behavior by trying to stop the monster before it got any bigger.
