What do you guys thing of this ring?

http://www.kay.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayEnlargeView?langId=-1&storeId=10101&catalogId=10001&imgDir=9401&partNumber=940172900

(Sorry, I don''t know how to add pictures)

I really truly LOVE the Tacori and Ritani rings. I''ve seen so many beautiful ones but I know that they''d never be in our budget so I''m trying to think realistically. I love the antique-y setting. It is 5/8 carat t.w. I don''t know a lot of the other specifics but just wanted to give a general size estimate.

I should be working on a paper for one of my grad classes but instead...i''m ring shopping online...bad idea!

Anyways...just wanted to get some unbiased opinions. Please keep in mind that we don''t have a ton of money to spend on a ring, and honestly, I really wouldn''t want him to spend like 5k on a ring, I''d rather save that money towards our first house. Besides, we can always upgrade to something bigger and better down the road. Thanks for any opinions!

Also, if any of you know of any reasonably priced ring dealers or designers, I''d love more sites to check out!

I like the EC''s in the halo...details are very pretty.

Please, whatever you do, don't buy from Kay. I can't tell you how many unhappy customers we've had come to PS and beg for help because Kay screwed them or told them that their diamond was something that it's not.

I'm an undergrad, and FF is a grad student, so we have almost a negative budget. Lol. One reason this is ok, is because I want a colored stone to begin with, so no big deal. But I do feel your pain.

Here are some sites for inspiration.
Pearlman's
Erica Grace
Greenlake
Leon Mege

I recommend going to this thread and looking at eye candy, and saving pics of rings you like. If you save any (and you will!) make sure and save it under the poster's name it is, if you want to ask them any questions later.

Also, you can create a thread in Rocky Talky or Show Me The Ring and post pics of settings you like, and ask for help finding something similar. The ladies (and gents) who hang out there are absolutely wonderful and always willing to help. And they love the challenge of working within a budget.

Welcome to PS, and good luck finding your ring!!!

I think it''s very pretty!

Thanks so much for the other links! I LOVE the vintage look and am completely in love with the greenlake site you included! Waaaay too many beautiful rings. I''ve already created a design page and forwarded to the BF. Hopefully he likes something there too. Still think they are probably out of our budget but we shall see.

So just out of curiousity...what are some of the Kay horror stories?

If you like something and are on a budget... have u considered purchasing an OEC and LOGR has some REALLY pretty settings for CHEAP and u can upgrade the diamonds in it and the gold to a little bit better and you could get a really pretty ring for NOTHING! and no one would ever know.. Check out LTP''s new OEC ring with a LOGR setting here There is also a thread in the colored stones thread about settings that we have all purchased!! :-)

Sorry but I am sooo not knowledgeable about diamonds. What does OEC or LOGR stand for?

oec=old european cut.. and logr= lord of gem rings is a seller on ebay who sells settings

Thanks so much!

prettyinpink,

Do you know around how much your BF wants to/can spend? This Beverly K halo is pretty reasonably priced at under $1k. You could put a .50 ct stone in it for ~$1k more.

Beverly K Halo

Thanks, I love the Beverly K. I looked at that one earlier today. I''m not quite sure how much he''s willing to spend...my guess would be between 1.5k-2k. He really doesn''t want me to be involved in the ring process at all and since neither of us know much...it kind of makes me nervous. I want to be able to provide him with as many examples and ideas as possible so that he knows exactly what I would like in an ER. I think the part that scares me is that he is so logical...and a mechanic...so very hands on. He''s not one for research, etc so I guess I''m kind of nervous that he''ll just find something he likes and go with it without really looking into it or researching to make sure he gets a good deal since it is a pretty big investment.

I know a lot of people to say get a great stone and then upgrade the setting later but I personally am all about the setting...I''d rather have a great setting and upgrade the stone later. But that''s just me.

I think the setting is important too. That Bev K would get my vote so far. I would stay away from the LOGR settings if you want quality. They are fun and gorgeous for the price, but I''ve heard they are hollow and probably aren''t something that will last a lifetime ya know?

Okay...so I found a new favorite ring...what do you guys think of this one...

I really appreciate all of the advice and direction you have provided me!

Very unique! I think Greenlake does beautiful work and I have heard they are really great to work with too.

Thanks! It is definitely unlike anything I ever thought I''d be interested in but really caught my eye as soon as I saw it! I definitely like the thought of having something that would be one-of-a-kind.

Me too, that''s why I had my setting custom made too! It''s such a fun process.

Honestly,

Of the "chain stores" (IE: Kay, Reeds, Zales, etc.) I''ve heard Kay is the lowest of the low, when it comes to quality.

Just be aware of it... I would do a little bit more research. You can still get a really quality diamond for under $1000.

Also, the green lake one is very pretty and very unique. Make sure you read the "fine print": estimates are on the mounting only!

If your man isn''t into research, then I think it''s OK for you to educate him on the process without getting "too" involved.

Steer him away from places like Ebay, though. Do a little bit of diamond reserach- find out what "stats" you like (IE: The 4 C''s: carat, cut, color, clarity) and make sure he knows what''s good and what''s bad before he buys blindly!

For my boyfriend, I make a word document- posted pictures of rings that I like and disliked, and also included what stats I thought were good for his budget.

Then I emailed it to him, causally mentioned it, and left it at that. Hopefully, he looked at it! I figured, that way, he could at least print it off, take it to a jewelry store, or use it as a guide to happiness... ha ha!

Have fun with the search!

The ring from greenlake is very unique! I like it a lot.

Would your BF be totally opposed to joining the PS forum? It may be overwhelming for him at first since there is SO MUCH information here, but all he really has to do is start a thread asking what he can find within his budget and then he at least knows what stats to look out for to get the most out of his money. Everyone is so friendly and helpful that I''m sure it will make the whole research aspect less daunting for him.

I also made a collage of rings that I like and I sent it to my BF to print out with a recommendation to keep it in his wallet for quick reference ;). Like your BF, mine doesn''t want me to be involved so much in the ring process but I wanted to make sure he knew what I liked so I''ve been adamant on the setting and he''s in charge of the rock!

Good luck with your search
