Hello, I’m looking for an everyday piece and old cuts look interesting to me but I don’t know much about them. Everyone talks about cut being important and I don’t know what I should be looking at. Thank you for your help in advance! IMG_2198.jpeg

I think we need much more close-up pictures and videos to judge the facet pattern.

Ah, those are the only photos available on the website. Without risk of someone else snatching it up, it’s 0.4ct I SI for $500. Maybe too good to be true?

Unfortunately we can't really help without better pics. If those are the only available ones then I'd pass on it.

If they aren’t willing to give you up close pics and videos, I would pass. $500 is still $500 and I personally would rather put that towards a more pricy piece that has a beautiful facet pattern that I’ve fallen in love with.

But then again, I’m more of a romantic vs deal catcher.

That makes sense. I’ll try to contact them after the new year and see if they can provide more photos.

And a certification of some kind, otherwise you don't know if it's even a diamond. Are you specifically looking for an OEC?

I know PS standards are high with keen eyes. I won’t feel bad now if it’s gone before I have a chance to get better photos. I agree with putting the money toward something I love. Appreciate your thoughts!

It’s from a reputable antique shop, do you think I still a cert of some kind? Honestly I’m just looking for a sparkly necklace I can wear daily. My eyes tend to fixate on chunky facets like emeral, ascher, OEC, etc.

If it's from a reputable vendor then less needed. I thought (based on pics) that it was a private party sale. Whats your budget?

They stock high end and branded items so the necklace is on the low end bargain. I don’t really have a budget but let’s say around $1,000. I had a fashion piece with 4-5 mm CZ that broke a long time ago and miss having something that’s understated but sparkly. For reference my studs are 3.3 mm MRB so I’m open to the cut but I do like them chunky facets.

Look at Ivy and Rose and Old World Diamonds (and their ready-made jewelry site, Peace and Carat). They have lots of pix and will provide more. I wouldn’t risk buying anything without better pictures —I would assume if it’s a reputable dealer and a pretty stone, they’d want to show it off.

I mean, from those photos you can't even tell if its an old cut or not. And you can't trust vendor descriptions from estate sellers.

I think for the price this one is very nice. Although I'd think about the cloud and probably want to see it.

Can you see the clouds on the photos?

Well, I can't but my eyes aren't very discerning. If you like it, I'd contact them, ask about the cloud (the cert says singular so not multiple clouds), and ask for a video of it close up. For a certain budget, for me, a stone doesn't have to be perfect, just look bright and if an OEC I like to see the colors that can be reflected from the environment. Others have different priorities.
