Hello All ,

I`m a Gem Dealer from Finland and my family has been in Diamond business for generations however Rubies are relatively new to me. I was quoted 3500 USD for this piece and its weighting at 4.8 ct.

The stone is quoted as Pigeon Blood ( I think its too pink to be pigeons blood ) and No heat.

What is your opinion about it? Should i take it or pass it?

Videos attached.

Thanks Upfront.

It looks beautiful; but pictures don't tell us what we need to know so I couldn't say, not enough information. Does it have a certificate? That's an incredibly low price for an untreated ruby or even a heated ruby. I wouldn't trust anything stated about it without a quality cert. I don't know of how a ruby of that size goes for under a thousand a carat, even wholesale. That makes me cautious. I wouldn't trust it without a verifiable cert.

The stone has GRS report ( It doesn't state its Pigeon Blood ) and on the report it says no heat. About dealer I'm pretty confident , been dealing with him for 2-3 years now and his words have so far matched the certificates I had after I received the stone. This was first quoted to me at 7,000 USD but got it negotiated down.
I can get my money back if it comes out heated etc so im not really concerned about losing the money but rather trying to figure out whether if its a just price

Thanks for your reply

If that's the case, you're very fortunate, it's a price almost none of us can access ourselves as non trade.
I would snatch it up unless you have access to several to choose from at those prices. It almost seems to good to be true!

Hei Wilhelm and welcome to the boards!! I think that ruby has really beautiful color and may possess some fluorescence in person, which is a great sign. Do you know its origin? Looks Burmese to me, which is another plus when we're talking value. I also trust GRS to accurately denote enhancement. Any lab can be wrong, but if GRS says no heat, I would feel comfortable with that fact. You can always have it retested, of course, especially if the report is older. The only criticism I have for this stone is the clarity. It's veering towards translucent as opposed to transparent with inclusions. BUT, the price is insanely low, so, really, who cares. If the stone is everything that it's been represented as, and you have a generous return policy, I think it's a no-brainer to get it home. Good luck!

The stone has GRS report ( It doesn't state its Pigeon Blood )

From what I've heard, GRS are pretty liberal with the pigeon blood designation. If this stone doesn't have it even according to GRS, I would assume it's definitely not pigeon blood. As a consumer I can tell you this qualification of ruby colour is something I find confusing in most cases and thus tend to avoid taking it into account altogether.

Have you seen the stone with your own eyes or are you just going by the video the vendor sent you? If it's the latter, are the vendor's photos and videos usually accurate in representing colour?

Another thing to take into account is the clarity. When I was first entering the coloured stones world as a consumer I had no idea or concept of just how important clarity is to a gem's price. I was actually surprised just how averse effects it can have on the value. It's difficult to judge this by low-res screenshots from a video alone, but I agree with what @Autumn in New England is seeing - it's more translucent, not transparent, and this could be part of the reason why the price is at the level you've managed to negotiate.

In any case, it's a big ruby and with attractive colour. It will probably sell even if it's translucent. The rubies I've seen sell in jewellery shops... You have no idea...

On a side note, you should keep in mind that if you're a member of the trade, there are a set of extra rules that apply to you, and you don't currently have a trade badge. The forum policy is at the bottom page, you can read all the relevant information there.

It looks Afghan to me, which could explain the pre-discount price / color combination which is absolutely in line with what I get quoted on IG

Quick thread jack!:
I hope we can get an informational thread someday from you and others who truly know and love ruby, talking about all the small distinctions that effect price. Teaching discernment. The knowledge needed is vast. It would be truly invaluable to many. Just a thought:wink2:

Hello all again , wanted to update few things.

Thank you all for the information.

@Avondale : I will definitely check the forum terms , it was kind of a rush post so will be checking more carefully in the future.

@VividRed : Stone`s origins are Afghanistan , but has a burmese look from what i have been told. what do you think about the final price though? It is a good stone for the price? ( Trade wise )

At 3,5k it is a good price, hard to beat really. Color is nice and as ruby-like as it gets. It fluoresce strongly, but clarity is a major problem - I fear it might look mostly lifeless in person. If you may return it, I would go ahead and see it yourself.

Edit: if it were my money, I would not hesitate at this price

I’m just amazed a gem dealer in the diamond business with dealings for generations, has absolutely no knowledgeable trustworthy contacts for colored gemstones to consult
Enough to post for advice from rando’s when any internet search will tell you a no heat GRS report nearing 5ct nice looking ruby is nowhere near priced $3500usd.

From someone who’s signed up 2+ years ago, and this is the first contribution.

Boy I hope when the ruby is listed for retail sale, we can continue this convo over to that other thread about how much vendors mark up their stones.

@Rfisher Answer is quite simple , i dont really do business with Asian markets where most of the ruby is put up for sale. My main field is diamonds and we recently switched up to Sapphires and Rubies. Sapphires are one my interests therefore im very well aware of its prices but rubies are a new thing for me.

The same internet search will also tell you that prices are random and there is no fixed price and there are pieces sometimes put up for so
Cheap that you can make a killing while someone else will list same stone for 10x the price.

Additionally , its quite naive to think that i am consulting only random people but i guess sometimes people are just writing in order to vent off :)

Also , if you are so hurt about vendors marking up their products , you are free to risk your capital and offer cheaper goods instead of complaining ;)

Good luck
