What do you think of full moons?

For a lighter topic, do you have any thoughts on the idea that people get crazy when there’s a full moon?

I usually roll my eyes at things like this but… I admit that whenever things seem like they’re getting weird, I do have a habit of checking on what phase the moon is in. :errrr:

I always hear that as a nurse at a hospital, but honestly I don't find much of a difference. The only thing I can really think of is that a fuller moon means a brighter night which means more people out and about which means more potential for trauma

I'd have a hard time believing anything else to be other than confirmation bias. As addendum, the hospital at which I work is a level 1 trauma center serving a vastly underprivileged, underserviced, and over-violence-exposed community. So, if full moons were going to make things worse we'd be a target

Hmmm, well I have a co-worker who is really into phases of the moon and crystals and such. Whenever I notice that customers are acting especially difficult or things are just not quite right in the bakery, it tends to be a full moon that night. I am only ever aware because she will say “Yup, full moon tonight.”

Maybe there is something to it?

We also cannot forget the great Lon Cheney Jr. as the Wolfman

I think the moon and whatever it represents to us is a lot more ingrained in our culture than some may want to admit.

“Many moons ago…”
“Once in a blue moon” —just a couple of sayings that permeate language in the states.

Our indigenous peoples kept lunar calendars, named 13 moons, fished and planted by the light of the moon.

Songwriters are forever incorporating the moon into music.

Tides, women’s cycles, life itself, all tied to the moon.

Where is @marcy ? She’s our astronomy expert, I’d love to hear her thoughts on this question!

I can always tell it’s a full moon. My students in class are cray cray! It’s really uncanny how that happens. :wall:

Ok, on a positive note, I love walking the pooch on a full-moon evening.

I think a full moon is so beautiful

And yes haha people do act a bit loony during the full moon

Moon cakes and other edible goodies during the mid-autumn festival in HK when I was growing up, and the lanterns too.

Otherwise not a lot.

Yes, the moon and the stars have been a major influence on our lives since well before recorded history. However, as an amateur astronomer and a psychology major though, I cannot say a full moon has an impact on people’s behavior. The closest full moon of the year will be overnight on August 30-31 and the moon will be about 18,000 miles closer than average. You might notice the supermoon is brighter than normal. There may be higher tides than normal around the full moon. As for behavior, it’s just another day where people are people and how many of us are normal? Anyway, take a peak at the full moon that night. It’s a Blue Moon since it’s the second full moon of August. It’s the 3rd of 4 supermoons in a row. And the steady golden light shining near the moon that night is Saturn.

I work in a job where I talk to dozens of different people a day. There is marked different in people during a full moon.

My mom used to get kind of "extra" during a full moon. My brother was the one who noticed and mentioned it to me, as it was a monthly occurrence.

When I worked around lots of people, I used to notice that some people could get rather giddy, others would be just "off", etc., for no particular reason. My business partner would point out that it was due to a full moon. ;)2

Thank you for chiming in! I’m forever impressed with your celestial knowledge.

I love full moons as I think they are beautiful! When working, when things got a little crazy, we would always check for a full moon. I do think there is a correlation between it and behaviors! If the changes in barometric pressure cause headaches, why can't the moon influence us as well? BTW, my mother used to swear her headaches were from barometric pressure. Everyone acted like she was crazy as it was years ago. As usual, I am still finding out that most of what she said had merit!

Totally echo the comments shared above. Full moons are so beautiful and, although I don't know the exact science behind it, I think it has an effect on behavior and biology. Could be coincidence or we'll find out more as technology and science advance.

Hi,

When I was a young woman and pregnant it was told to us that we should check when the full moon was due, when our due dates came nearer, as the full moon would encourage water breakage. I did check when the full moon was coming, and my first child was born the night of the full moon.

It may sound stupid, but I aways thought if the moon regulates the tides, it probably regulates our bodies because we are mostly water. Drs and nurses used to say they were busier in the labor and maternity wards on the nites of the full moon. The navigational pull is strong,

I do not rule it out.

Tomorrow night is the closest supermoon of the year. It won’t look bigger necessarily, but it’ll be about 15% brighter than normal. The golden light nearby it will be Saturn.

Enjoy!

I've never noticed anything about myself, or others, being different during a full moon.
But then, I'm not the kind of person who'd pay attention, or give any credence, to hoho things.

Humans are pattern-seeking beings.
Finding Elvis, Jesus, and Virgin Mary on toast, or in clouds, and such.
Pattern-seeking beings like feeling they've found that were hunting for.

I don't, but no worries.
I was around 4 years old when I started noticing that I'm not usual.
It took a long time, but now I don't just accept my not-usualness.
Now I find being in the minority comforting.

Full moons aren't supernatural; they're just another ho num natural thing.
Besides, calendars (the design of which are the cause of two full moons in one month) were not handed down from on high.
Like religions, there are many calendars, all made and agreed with by humans.
Ho hum.

I think it's at least possible that the full moon has some kind of physical effect on people. I don't understand much of it except that it has a gravitational pull that affects the tides.

When you consider how air pressure changes, for example, cause many people to get headaches or their arthritis to act up, I think there could be some kind of moon phase effect on humans too.

Just a vague thought here, though.

We defo are influenced by the moon, but it's nothting magical, just more chemicals in the brain, like serotonin.

As the moon creates the tides, it affects us too (and the animals).

There is a supermoon coming up, as in a second full moon within a calendar month, in case anyone is interested.

if only my phone was working
the moon is huge right now
i thought i was going to have trouble getting Borris in for the night, but her tummy must have been rumbling and she came straight in
and Puff Ball is asleep in the laundry on his chair with an old jersey of Gary's
so no cat parties tonight

Can't wait to be in London in mid September 2023 for a show, as I shall pop into Chinatown to get some mooncakes while they are in season.

Probably just the ones with 1 yolk. Can't remember when was the last time I had mooncakes.

For sure. I live in the part of the world that experiences Chinook winds and for people who have headache/migraines, the change in BP make them suffer.

Maybe we’re hard wired to “revere” the Moon.
For countless thousands of generations the moon was a mystical orb.
Before electricity a full moon - the moon in general….must have made a huge difference in people’s lives.
Maybe this is residual?
