Hi everyone,

Been looking around this super helpful community for a while, and now I'm posting for the first time to ask for your opinions.

What do you all think about this 1.01ct ruby set in a pendant? The seller says it's heat only, but it doesn't come with a report from a reputable lab.

Sorry for the blurry photos and videos, it's the best I could do with a loupe and an iphone.

If the vendor is reputable then nothing to worry about as the report adds a lot of cost for a smaller heated stone.
Cloudy is good - gives you the famed Kashmirir sapphire effect - but red on red in this case.
You can see the stone is fluorescing nicely as per the pinker color in daylight. Thankfully window glass does not stop the very long wave UV that makes ruby (and diamonds) fluoresce.

Hello there and welcome to the forum! That's a nice little ruby. I think it has wonderful vivacity in terms of color, and it looks like it may have some fluorescence. In this case, the purplish tinge fred mentioned is really a function of the silk that Garry noted. It can sometimes return blue light to the eye when the rutile inclusions run perfectly parallel to the table like that. The stone does display some windowing in the first photo, but I'm really not seeing it in the videos. As far as a lab report is concerned, it would be a must for me to confirm composition and treatments. But depending on the price you're paying, perhaps it isn't necessary. That's totally your call. I certify everything just for peace of mind. Enjoy!!

Thanks! I hadn’t realized the pink colors were due to fluorescence

A little to purplish for my tastes, but that is all subjective.

If you like it, that is all that counts.

It does indeed appear rather purplish under sunlight and blue LEDs. Here’s a picture under warmer indoor lighting:8781003E-37EB-4232-BF53-9AC1FE997BA0.jpeg

That’s good to know about the source of the fluorescence!

Good eye, I do think there is some windowing as you said. I can see some light partially shine through when there’s a bright light placed behind it

The price is around $1700 USD including the setting so I’m not sure if it’s worth getting a lab report either, it feels a bit borderline to me

If you're in the US, I think GIA would be the cheapest ($70). AGL charges more for "fancy" mountings (pretty much anything other than a solitaire). Good luck!

To this would be decent value for money is the treatment is really just heat. Color is nice, not pure red, has some pink and purple and what seems to be good fluorescence. The cloudy/hazy layer under the table is what drives the price down; else it would be twice as expensive. Keep in mind, this will make it close up indoor, as shown in your last picture.

If the treatment includes fissure healing with minor residues, it would still be a fair western world retail price, but not a bargain and I would consider other options.

Get a GIA origin report :) or ask the vendor to get one and offer to pay for it - that way you avoid bad surprises
