Ours is going to be vanilla... just cause it was the cheapest and our budget is stretched. We would''ve really preferred chocolate!

My mother is horrified because according to tradition here, the wedding cake is ALWAYS a fruit cake, made with rum. I don''t like fruit cakes, though. Now chocolate...

I was wondering if this is the tradition elsewhere, or do the bride and groom just choose whatever flavour they like best?

What flavour is your cake going to be?

Yummy! Vanilla is always classic, always great. Ours is going to be chocolate fudge cake with cinnamon frosting. Can''t wait!!!

Sha, we had a three tiered with hazelnut cake with chocolate buttercream in the top, chocolate cake with strawberry jam filling for the third, and white chocolate cake with rasberry jam filling for the second. I wanted the hazelnut but wasn''t sure it would be everyone''s taste, DH wanted the rasberry (I hate rasberries) and then we chose something we both liked for the third. I think it''s important to pick a flavor that you like rather than what people might expect (because others are bound to like what you like, too!).

Fruitcake?! Bleh

I would much rather have vanilla.

We went with vanilla and I think raspberry filling, three tiered cake made by one of DH''s assistants who does wedding cakes on the side, she only charged us $100 for a cake that fed 100 guests! of course I forgot the cake topper on the wedding day but being the professional she is, she brought along extra flowers that went with our wedding colors and improvised, it was beautiful and worked out just fine! We got lots of compliments on the cake, it was a Sunday afternoon ceremony with on-site reception and anything heavier than vanilla/fruit filling would maybe have been overdoing it, imo.

ours was vanilla cream (more like a yellow cake), with one layer raspberry filling and one layer of lemon)
vanilla buttercream frosting

we would have had chocolate but had a chocolate fountain so didn''t want to overdo

Ours will be vanilla w/ lemon curd filling and buttercream icing....yum....we both love lemon!

I never heard the fruitcake tradition! But ours was a chocolate espresso cake wth chocolate mousse filling with a vanilla buttercream frosting. It was soo yummy!!

Mmmmmm, we haven''t settled on a cake yet, but I''m secretly pining for this Tiramisu-inspired cake we tried at a bridal show a couple weeks ago. It was yellow cake layers bathed in a coffee and Kahula wash, and between each of the layers was shaved chocolate and cream cheese icing. It was SOOO good! The baker is at the top of my must-call list.

We''re having a 3 tiered cake with one layer white cake with white chocolate filling and buttercream frosting, one layer of white cake with mango filling, and one layer with marble cake and milk chocolate fudge filling.

Even though it was only the two of us, we had a local baker make us a fabulous wedding cake: fresh lemon cake (4 layers) with fresh raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream frosting with fresh edible flowers and raspberries on top. It was enough for at least 20 people. We ate most of it over the course of the next three days. And we loved every bite! Get what YOU want. It''s your wedding!

Ours was strawberries and cream (vanilla cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream) with vanilla buttercream icing. People raved about it!

That sounds DELICIOUS!!!!

Oooh... I want to eat all these cakes!!

They sound sooo yummy!! And my mother wants to stick with fruitcake! BAH!! How boring!! I think EVERY wedding I've gone in the past 30 years has had fruit cake as the wedding cake. Kimberlina13, I think it's a tradition in most (many?) Caribbean islands, where I'm from. I didn't even know people used other flavours until visiting pricescope!

I also love that chocolate mouse espresso cake idea. That sounds dreamy....

Anything with chocolate is a winner for me!

Sabine, did you say mango filling? Lovely! I love mangoes but never heard of anyone using mango filling for a cake!

99.9% of wedding cakes in the UK, until recently, were fruitcake - and you kept the top tier for the christening of your first child. Now there are more choices on offer.

I''m having a traditional 3 tier fruitcake - I''m making it myself, so it can be fed copious amounts of booze over 6 months

and because I hate shop-bought marzipan.

Then we are having a chocolate groom''s cake as well...

Our wedding cake was carrot with cream cheese frosting....mmmmmm..........we got so many compliments on our choice!!!! Guests loved it because it was different from the norm, and many people truly love carrot cake, which surprised me!

our''s is chocolate infused with raspberry!!

mmmmmmmm, I LOVE carrot cake!!!

Our place is a catering company that owns 2 mansions so they offer the cakes. We had a lot to choose from but we''re either doing chocolate with chocolate ganosh icing or rasberry marble with white mouse filling. So honey, it''s up to you

Bah! Don''t listen to her and get what you want! We had cupcakes so we had:

Ghirardelli Chocolate: chocolate cupcake with a sugary sweet chocolate frosting

Sweet Vanilla: vanilla cupcake with sweet madagascar bourbon vanilla frosting

Chocolate Velvet: chocolate cupcake with a velvety bittersweet chocolate buttercream

Meyer Lemony Lemon: vanilla cupcake with a tart lemon filling and lemon buttercream

Fleur Del Sel: chocolate cupcake with caramel filling, ganache frosting& fleur del sel

I am drooling right now just thinking about them...

We just ordered our cake...
Vanilla cake with two layers of custard filling and one layer of raspberry filling.
We are also having a dessert bar with some of my mom''s best desserts: tiramisu, chocolate mousse cake, and strawberry pie!
18.gif

We are having a "dessert themed" cake. It will be 4 layers and each layer will be a different flavor

They are:
Tiramisu
Cheesecake
Bananas Foster

Our top tier will be the Bananas Foster since that''s our favorite dessert :)

I think American children are raised to despise fruitcake.

What about working caribbean flavors into the cake. For example, white chocolate and passion fruit or Chocolate and mango...

I think we''re just going to go with white cake with strawberries or raspberries and vanilla butter cream frosting.

Oooh, can I have the recipe? My pythons would be up for that one

Sorry, couldn''t resist

Not to hijack the post, but Pandora, I thought of your reptile babies this weekend. We''ve discovered that we have mice. We set traps last night and caught one, but the others just licked the pb off of the traps. I wish we had a python to feed them to instead...

Lol, fraid they wouldn''t be much used to you - it''s winter time so they don''t eat much!

Now, a burmese - they are dustbins, and a mouse would be a mere canape for them

Try getting a cat!

We have two and they wouldn''t know how to catch a mouse if it bit them on the nose. Seriously, that''s how we discovered that we had them. We discovered them in the basement, being chased by a field mouse. Literally, the mouse was chasing my 2 full-grown cats. They we''re so freaked out. I think the hunting gene bypassed them both.

Our cake is going to be two flavors (alternating layers)

1) vanilla bean cake with buttercream and raspberry jam filing with a raspberry puree on the side (the more traditional one)

2) almond cake with buttercream and apricot jam with a blackberry puree on the side. (this one was to die for, just the right amount of almond flavor which really brought out the sweetness in the apricot).
