Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
no !
not what you had for dinner on Wednesday (but feel free to show pictures)

I'm rather thinking about the leftovers when you guys buy a setting to harvest a stone
- or maybe you buy the setting to put your own stone in and are left with the stone it came with
or the side stones that are left over ?
or bits and bobs from the inherited items that you remade ?

or you had to buy a parcel of say 10 and only used 7 etc etc
or maybe it was too much hastle and expense to send something back ?

i know there are some diamond's by the yard necklaces out there

this thread may flop,
but i thought if i put it here it can include lab and faux stones
as im thinking about those beautiful brooches that get brought for the stone - will they ever be worn as a brooch again ?

I currently do have some leftovers hidden somewhere I can't remember. I have the 3 teeny mined diamonds from my mother's engagement ring. I know one is chipped but I would like to take them in to find out which one it is. Sometimes I think of setting that beautiful lab sapphire I got awhile ago with 2 of her smaller diamonds in a 3 stone. But there's 0 urgency there because I am on ban island for quite some time xD

I also have my grandmother's engagement ring setting and wedding ring from her second husband. I'm definitely not sure of what to do with those. Mostly hanging onto them in case they strike my daughter's fancy someday. If they do I'll have them rehabbed a bit. They both need reshanking badly and some other work. As well as have a stone set in it.

I've got two blue lab spinels waiting to become cuffs one day.

And some little orange citrines somewhere I got a long time ago to make a memorial ring for my mother. And I just didn't because money. But maybe a by the yard set could be made with them even if they are small since there's at least 7 of them.

And last I have a lovely little lab ruby. Well maybe not so little. It's huge to me. But I'm trying to decide what to do with it.

Also realised I totally misread the question. It was what have you used, not what is lying around xD

Well if that's the case I stick with the teeny diamonds and the lab sapphire. I really have that on my mind.

And I did harvest my engagement stone from my grandmother's ring. So even though I don't wear it it's very special to me.

I also harvested lab opals from a bracelet whose construction made me itchy. And I made a temporary station necklace with it. It will need to see the real jeweller eventually and have the chain itself switched out. Apparently I'm so delicate skinned only 1mm or less box chains don't irritate me lol. Everything else? Yikes. It makes me sore really quick. Especially if it's not platinum. Eventually I'm going to use the rest of the synthetic opal leftovers for a bracelet of the same. So im excited for that. :D

if i find the money tree i'll send you a cutting
and no, its good to see your list, it means these things are not forgotten
thank you so much for your reply :kiss2:

how are you with a pearl 'chain' ?
im not sure how that would look with opals ubt it could be a temparery option
i need a rose gold chain for my big smokey quartz pendant but gold prices are through the roof especially for a heafy chain, so im thinking of making as delicate as practicle pearl necklace for it to sit on in the mean time

too late to edit the thread title, but future projects most welcome :appl:

If I buy a ring for the stone and the setting isn't anything special, I usually just take a credit of the scrap value of the setting against the price of the new piece I'm having made.

If I think someone may want the setting, I've hung onto them, thinking I'd sell them on LT, but haven't done that yet.

I have a few stray loose diamonds that have come from other pieces that I will eventually put into some kind of ring or even a DBY necklace probably. I call them rescue diamonds and I've made a small 5 stone ring in the past with rescues. (Dk's photo)

I've never bought a ring for the setting only with a stone to remove/replace.

We‘re having leftover Spag Bol tonight, because I cooked double yesterday @Daisys and Diamonds

At the moment, I have the left over box chains with little bobbles on the ends which have tiny diamonds in them, from my bolo bracelet to bangle conversion. I was thinking about making them in to dangly earrings, but I‘m not sure I will.

HI:

I have some strays and try to keep them together. I tend to take them in to the estate dealer for cash. At this point, I am no longer creating new projects--I need to wear what I have!

cheers--Sharon

I keep all the odds and ends in a bag, with an inventory list so I know what's what, and then I try and find use for them in other projects! My mom does the same and will find a use for something after years and years.

This is exactly what I do, too. I went on a re-set spree last year. Now I am down to things that don’t go well together. Give it a few years

The melee stones from my last setting for my 1.19cf EC have been earmarked to be set in a pearl setting of some sort for the large Tahitian drop I purchased from Sarah at Kojima Pearls during my visit to LA for an pearl related residential event in 2016.

DK :))

Most of my current "inventory" are upgrade-able so that has cut down my previously loved stash. Things that I don't wear and can't trade, get passed on to my nieces or friends. I used to have jewelry sales at work and made them inexpensive enough I had no problem selling things. As for loose gemstones, I have a little heart-shaped crystal dish that all of them are in, it's been useful to get stones out - color and shape wise - when I am trying to design something in my head. I call the dish my Prozac in a jar. It sets on our mantle.

I give most of them to my son. He's got a trove of various stones. I gave him a spinel to take to school on Gold Rush day and one kid was thrilled to find a gem while they were panning for gold.

Ooh actually do wonder now about a pearl chain. I would probably need to find some findings for that though. Whereas the synthetic opals are right here and I already have jump rings :D They just need soldering to a non irritating chain by a professional.
