What I Wish My Mother Told Me

I have been a long-time lurker here, but it's time to come out!

This year, Pricescope has been my guilty pleasure, enjoyed during the day (if I managed to get my two under two to sleep at the same time), or in the evening if my DH was occupied elsewhere. It has been my (literally) often sole shiny moment amidst all the glorious grime of stay-at-home mummyhood. I found the forum after my DH okayed an upgrade of sorts, after the birth of our two bubs. I found that my engagement ring (will post pics) had to be almost permanently shelved after the birth of my first little one due to its size, heaviness, but especially the sharpness of its prongs. Most mums will know how careful you have to be with baby skin; that's why I wish my Mum had told me to get a low-set bezel engagement ring, lol. A pic of neatfreak's bezel on google images led me here, and the first time I saw an AVC I literally lost my breath. So that's what I'm upgrading to: a low-set platinum AVC to be precise, once I decide on the setting and the AVC, lol.

I promise to post pics once all is said and done (which will be very, very soon), but in the meantime I want to share my favourite pieces that I am incredibly lucky to own and wear, as well as to show where I've come from and where I'm heading to.

My great-grandmother had been kicking around in the dust on her cattle station here in Queensland, Australia, when she unearthed this massive 'rock'. She had the rock cut and made into a ring for my Mum's 16th birthday, and I was lucky enough to inherit it on my 21st birthday. I don't exactly know what the stone is, and I don't really care; the ring is priceless to me, and I wear it every day (when I leave the house, anyway). It is incredibly white inside, but very very blue in sunlight. And it's huge--over 10mm. So when my then-fiance and I started looking for rings, no solitaire (that we could afford at the time) compared. I ended up getting a vintagesque platinum flower ring made as my engagement ring. It 'went' better with my Mum's ring than a solitaire would have. But it's large and complex, but more of a right hand ring, I think now.

I love clean lines at heart, and I crave a simple solitaire to wear every day, while changing nappies, cleaning endlessly, bathing babies, gardening etc. I know I won't be the first person here to downgrade size for everyday wear, but I'll always love taking these two rings on special outings.

Here they are.

Those are so special and lovely!!! :appl: The setting on your grandmother's ring is great, and the flower ring is complimentary in size. I totally agree that the flower ring will make a perfect right hand ring!

An AVC is a wonderful choice, and you certainly will have something that no one else around you has! I love them, too, and look forward to seeing your newest ring!

Love, love, love them both! Hand shots of your flower ring please!

Very much looking forward to seeing your new AVC when you get it!

Beautiful rings!!! Can't wait to see your new AVC ring!

Beautiful rings! Very different styles but very lovely. Your engagement ring seems very unique compared to some of the other antique flower rings I have seen too!

I think your current ER will make a perfect fancy RHR. I love that you have a ring featuring a stone your Mother found, so cool! And of course, can't wait to see the August Vintage, how exciting!

Hi your rings are beautiful!!!! Hi to another fellow Aussie :wavey:

My husband cut a number of stones when he was a teen and I have some topaz he cut that is a similar colour, I wonder if that is what it is? I will ask my MIL what comes from that area for you I am sure she will know.

So glad that you introduced yourself and your bling! I remember not wearing my rings for a few years while my kiddos were little. I think I put them back on permanently (i.e. not only when going out for a special occasion) when the youngest was 2. I love both of your rings and think that they compliment one another beautifully! Can't wait to see your AVR...it sounds like it will be gorgeous and I like that the setting will be different from what you already have....looking forward to photos!

Thanks so much for all the lovely comments!! Feels so good to come out of lurkdom. I'm a bit starstruck by you all--I've followed so many of your searches for the perfect stone/ring.

DS, thank you for reassuring me about the AVC. I've never seen one irl so it makes me a bit nervous. Especially since when I went to talk to a jeweller about a potential setting, she said no-one in Australia has antique cushions because they are 'ugly'. Imagine! Originally, I planned on getting a real antique cushion, but to do so from so far away is so much more complicated than going with avc ags ideal optics. I think my avc is going to be an i like yours! I've had moments of concern over it being warmer (again, doubt laid by that jeweller), but at the same time all my favourite avcs do tend towards warmth. And cachette's k in that rainbow video-swoon!

Yenny, I searched long and hard for antique ovals like yours--and never found anything that came close. It is soooo beautiful. I wouldn't take it off if it were mine, kids or no ;)

Arkie, my Mum thinks topaz might be right, good spotting! It's certainly hard enough, it's taken so many knocks and drops through my careless 20s and hasn't chipped.

Asscherhalo, I have been tossing up between an asscher and an antique cushion for about 6 months; I think an asscher is in my future. I have been through the asscher thread many happy times, and yours is definitely one of my favourites! That jeweller I mentioned tried to get me to go with one of her (massively overpriced) asschers, and man, I was close. I love the depths.

Alex, here are some (terrible) hand shots, and a couple of others!

And panda, I can't wait to see what you end up with! I've checked out your avc many times, but it's unfortunately just not in my budget thanks to the aus dollar drop :(

Aw thanks honey! I'm excited to see your AVC as well!! They truly are a bit of a magical unicorn :P

I can't wait to see your AVC, it will be amazing!!!! Jewellers here have no clue I swear to you, one lady who was the head sales person at a high end jewellers kept calling my OEC a rose cut so I said politely it's an Old European cut, so she still kept calling it a rose cut.

I asked my husband where the Topaz came from and he said there is a well known field of them and you find them around Northern Qld, so yep that is what we all think it is. Let me know if you live near or ever come to Brisbane :wavey:

Your rings are so fun. I love your ring from your Mom. The setting is amazing and the stone is sooo unique. And your engagement flower ring is wonderful. You are lucky to have multiple sparklers. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks junebug and h-a girl!! Can't wait to add an avc sparkler to my collection :naughty:

Arkie, I'm a brisbanite too! Where-oh-where did you find your amazing ring in Australia?!! Every jeweller I've talked to about antique cuts gives me that 'oh, you poor simple girl' look!

Wow, Arielle, they are both so beautiful. I love your er, but even more, I love the magical story of your great-grandmother and the stone. I love how it is set - perfect setting for the stone. Have you ever tried to explore what the stone might be? Had a gemologist look at it, for example? Does it show abrasions or chipping? Again, thank you for sharing your rings.

Don't mind those pesky jewellers Arielle. I had one tell me to get my cushion refunded because it has slightly chunkier facets than the crushed ice they're used to. Plus, they said - it had a cutlet! Just terrible apparently. Lol.

Buy what you like and what strikes your fancy. Hey, like art and wine - who cares what others think if you think it's beautiful. An AVC would be great and I love hearing your story.

Welcome out of lurkerdom, and I understand that star struck feeling too. ;)

Very pretty rings. Your grandmother's stone is in very good shape. I wonder if it has blue fluorescence.
