? What is a "not round" band called??

As in the ring itself it not round, it''s tapered more towards the top of the finger, and wider at the base of the ringer, like:

If I understand your question correctly, what you are talking about is called a Euroshank.

Well, the rationale for having it not round was so that the ring didn''t slide around on the finger...is that a euroshank?

Not a silly question at all! Yep, that''s what a Euroshank does--keeps it from sliding around (plus I find them to be really comfy).
