So...I was recently having a conversation about diamonds with my BF (because I want to buy myself a diamond pendant for Christmas) and he just could not understand my fascination with diamonds!!! He kept asking me what''s so special about them!!!

What would your answer to that question be!?!?!?

I dunno, because you like them? Honestly, I'm getting a diamond for an engagement ring out of fear that 20 years from now I would be bothered by a colored stone. Otherwise I would have gotten a pink sapphire. That's the stone I actually prefer. Tell him you love diamonds because they match everything! lol

LOL - so true!

Well, my answer was that I like anything that''s super-sparkly, and you can''t get super-sparklier than a diamond!!

He still didn''t get it lol...so I was just wondering everyone''s reasons for loving diamonds!!!

Well, I''m a sucker for blue sapphires...I looooove them so I already told FF that I wanted them as sidestones but that the center had to be a sparkly diamond!!

I think that there are 2 reasons that we girls go gaga for diamonds:

1. Girls are taught from a young age that diamonds are something special that they are supposed to love, yearn for, and covet. Part of the allure of diamonds may be that a girl is often given the message that she can''t just have one whenever she would like, but only for a special occasion, thus elevating their status to something that is special.

And if that''s not a good enough reason...

2. They''re just pretty

Dunno...what''s their fascination with cars or video games?

My answer is, colors. Puuuuuuuurdy colors. Ask him to name one thing that you can wear that can throw off such purdy flashes of fire and be that mesmerizing. Lots of things sparkle, but not much can flash fire like a diamond. The only thing that I can think of that can throw off a rainbow like that is the combination of rain drops and the sun. Ask if he can capture that and put it on your finger. If not, a diamond it is!!

I''m hoping to "upgrade" a pink sapphire ring I already have. That way I can get my pink in as a nice right hand ring (cough*Tiffany Legacy*cough). I actually wanted to get a matching band so I could have duel wedding sets on opposite fingers. Is that too much? haha

Oh I love it TGal, I am definitely going to use that line!!!

Because when you move your finger they sparkle :) you can spend all day looking at the pretty colours, well I could :)

Just... because...

I took FI to see Graff''s window and then he said - ''Okay, now I get it. Wow!''

He loves that I''m nuts about bling - but is too scared to buy me anything in case I don''t like it/could get a better deal. He likes surprises for birthdays etc so I get other ''useful'' things!

Because they make my heart flutter the same way it does when he looks at me.

they''re pretty. like us gals!

I wasn''t a big diamond girl until I frequented these boards. My husband also doesn''t understand the big deal, so this is what I told him.
I think it''s the only mineral that is also an element (carbon).
It is the hardest mineral on earth, and not just harder about 20 times harder than the next harder mineral (corundum). I read somewhere it has one of the tightest packing of atoms for a mineral.
Has one of the highest dispersions for a colorless mineral, which is what breaks the light into the colors of the spectrum, aka fire.
Has an adamantine luster. And to my eye has the brightest sparkle, makes the strongest flash of light to the eye, which you can see across the room. So it''s both mineralogically, chemically and optically an interesting stone.

Oops that stuff was off the top of my head and not quite right. even though corundum is a 9 on the mohs scale and diamond is a 10, diamond is about 4 times harder (not 20

)
Fire is brought about not just dispersion but by a combination of dispersion, refractive index, the angles (cutting) and lighting environment. Has one of the highest refractive indexes, and for a colorless gem one of highest dispersions.
Other interesting facts is that is transfers heat very efficiently (that''s why it feels cool to the touch), and is optically transparant over a large part of the spectrum (including visual) making it ideal for windows for sensors in space.
Anyways I thought it was cool how they are useful for more than just jewelry, and the kind of info that guys find interesting

part gypsy, I bet all that technical talk won him over!

Moonwater have you seen my promise ring? It''s got a pink saphire on it and i love it :)
It''s under the post "Going Crazy" lol

I dunno.... I just like "old stuff".

"Diamonds are exceedingly old. The heating and pressure process can take millions of years. Most diamonds used in jewelry are between one and three billion years old."

yes, it''s geologically interesting as well, forgot that one!

As far as winning over my husband, only kind of. He is tolerant of me spending a certain amount of money on myself for pretties, but still doesn''t understand the big deal about diamonds (they are not art supplies or music equipment

Smurfysmiles, first, awesome name. Second, I need to go find that thread! ETA: no hand shots?!?

part gypsy, it's funny what you said about your husband being tolerant. I don't have a big thing for pretties, but I do spend money on decorating our apartment. Everything from paint, new bedding, pillows, etc etc. My bf seriously does not care about decorating and couldn't understand what my "problem" was. But he will constantly buy guitar amps, keyboards, computer stuff etc. Finally I just compared the two. My obsession with decorating is like his obsession with music equipment. He left me alone after that. And frankly, once the paint is up and the main items are in the house, it's not like I keep spending. But he's a revolving door of equipment!

"Errr, what is it about custom Harley Davidson parts, the bike is brand new why do you keep adding and changing?"

hmmm ill try to get a hand shot, i guess i never considered it! maybe i can find a picture with my hand showing it lol

ok I have compiled random pictures where you can see the ring on my finger lol
unfortunately the pictures themselves other than the rings are dorky or bad of me so try to just look at the ring hahaha

I found another one! Me and john both look bad in this one lol but check out my cute ring :)

I''ve got one more for ya then I''m pictured out
oh and if you all are wondering about the black eye...
let''s just say I was visiting my friend in minneapolis where we had a bit too much to drink and on the way home I saw a sprinkler and wanted to run through it and instead trip and fell through a fence and bumping my eye on the railing

i know great story huh lol

Here''s another cool thing. This mathemetician looked at the microstructure of crystals, and of all mineral structures diamonds are considered super symmetric. In fact only one other crystal structure is as symmetric, what he called K4, and it is not found in nature (mathematical construct).

Because it could poke someone''s eye out if it''s high and big enough. So, self defense.

They''ve gotta at least accept that one. Being that I''ve accidentally bruised the BF''s leg with my bezel set gemstones, can you imagine a cathedral set Princess cut with some big honkin'' prongs?

They''re billions of years old! Enough said!
