What kind of inclusion?

This is a vintage 1980s Jabel .43 cttw (.25 center) wrap set I bought about a year ago for a song. The cut is out of this world, and I'm very happy with it.

It does have quite the noticeable inclusion. It technically passes the eye clean parameters due in part to it being such a small carat weight, but it is quite obvious if I'm looking at it closely with my nearsighted hawk eyes. It's visible in certain lighting and not in others. Sunlight makes it go crazy to the point it nearly glows. It seems to have flashes of brilliance within it when the sun hits it. It looks like a bird's eye view of a whale to me which I find to be neat.

What kind of inclusion is it? Does20221217_105025.jpg being near and on the edge present a structural risk?

I apologize that the diamonds had not had a bath before the picture, but this picture shows the inclusion the best.

The photo is out of focus so it's impossible to say for sure, but from your description is sounds like it might be a feather. They sometimes will reflect from certain angles and can also sometimes display rainbow colors. (a fracture filled diamond will usually do this)

It might be a durability concern if it is a feather. A large surface breaking feature at the girdle elevates risk of further damage. However, in this setting the girdle gets quite a bit of protection.

There's nothing to really do about it, and since you got a good deal, just enjoy the ring. If you ever decided to re-set the center stone, that is when you should probably get an in-person consultation from a jewelry professional.

You really do need the diamond clean.
e.g. it is possible all three marked in red are the same inclusion.
if it is a cluster of included cystals and not dirt then it will be fine.

I agree... it looks to be a feather, but I really think you should do a deep clean first. Best case scenario is it's just some schmutz. Worst case is it is indeed a feather, but I wouldn't be too concerned about stability issues. Pretty piece!

I appreciate everyone's replies! I have attached another picture after the diamond had a bath in hot water and Dawn detergent. I also tried to make it less blurry. I don't know if it will make it easier to discern any new information. I am trying to learn more out of plain old curiosity with a stack of diamond books to prove it!

@Texas Leaguer The inclusion does all that you describe--reflects at certain angles and shows rainbow colors too. Looking at it from the side it looks like a squiggly line that goes down vertically. It's good to know you believe the setting provides protection. I will definitely continue to enjoy it!

@Garry H (Cut Nut) You brought to my attention that there might be another spot at the 1:00ish position toward the table's center. In the new photo this spot looks to have the same opaque gray color as the original inclusion.

@Autumn in New England Thank you for saying you wouldn't expect stability issues and that it's a pretty piece! I like to keep vintage pieces as intact and original as possible.

Thank you again for taking the time to respond!

The large whitish inclusion in the lower left is the same one as the 1 oclock in the table. it is the reflection off the pavilion looking at tit from the underside. Unlike others I am not 1005 convinced it is a feather.

Thank you for this information, @Garry H (Cut Nut)! I am glad to know that you aren't convinced it's a feather. I'm not convinced either. Looking at it from the side, it looks like wisps of smoke to me.
