What methods do you recommend for cleaning?

As a friend was showing off her new sparkly, I noticed that mine was looking a little duller (how quickly we begin to compare!) I realizd that I know very little about caring for my ring. Even the platinum seems duller. Can anyone help me? I feel like a moron.

This is very sophisticaed. I hope you can understand the process

Spary ring with Windex--soak it.
Let sit for 3 min.
Gently scrub with soft baby tooth brush.
Rinse in hot water.
Pat dry with lint-free towel.
Use hair dryer to finish it off.

Works like a charm for me...but mind you, I also take my rings off when in the house, don't put lotion on with the rings on, and am generally careful.

If the diamond is set so that the pavillion is exposed, then a toothbrush and some liquid clear soap (e.g. dishwashing liquid, or bath gel) works fine. Dab a little on, brush, especially on the pavillion where dirt/grease like to accumulate, then rinse.

For more stuborn jobs, e.g. cleaning my diamond bracelets (32 stones), then I use an ultrasonic cleaner.

Accoriding to Helouise, equal parts amonia and tap water work well...let soak for ten minutes, rinse, and pat dry with a towel. I''m going to try this on my studs today.
 
Ammonia won''t hurt your diamond or platinum ring, but it will irritate your skin if you don''t rinse the ring off well with water, so make sure you do!!
 
I do the windex routine as well. Not only am I too lazy to do anything more sophisticated, I''m also one who hates to do more cleaning and after doing laundry and the dishes, all I can muster up is a bottle of pink (can''t remember scent) windex and a toothbrush to scrub with and this works. . .my diamonds sparkle

you girls ever get hard water spots on your diamond? i live in a area where the tap water is very hard and when i clean diamonds or crystals it leaves water spots on them,how can i get rid of the spots?

Use bottled water for rinsing.

I have the Sharper Image Ultrasonic cleaner, but I''ve found Windex and a toothbrush do a great job too. Also, just washing my hands with dish soap or using a shampoo that doesn''t have conditioner in it works great also. I used to just soak them in ammonia and rinse. They all work. The most gunk comes from hand lotion and sprays, like perfume or hairspray. I take my rings off whenever I clean or do dishes. My favorite is to have a jewelry store steam clean them. They''re always the most sparkly after that. Just don''t use bleach because it can weaken the settings, won''t hurt the stones, but not good for the metal.
 
I tried the ammonia/water mix and my studs now sparkle like new.
 
Would it be safe to use these methods on my three stone which has sapphires on the sides?

I use windex as well. When I have time, I just pour enough windex to soak the ring in a glass for about 10 minutes or so while I do other stuff, then just just a small brush to get underneathe as well while I''m rinsing it off.

I also have a ultrasonic cleaner I bought online, I remember it was $50 or so. Not too bad considering how much the ring costed... I think spending 50 bucks on a little machine is well worth it.

When I use the cleaner, I put half water, half windex... let it sit in there for a few minutes, rinse it off, wipe it dry... and it looks BRAND NEW! Even the platinum is SHINY!

Dry them with a paper towel...you won't get spots. We have hard tap water too and if I let them air dry they get spots, but when I dry them off with a paper towel, they are spotless.

I've been toying with the idea of an ultrasonic or the Salton recently... my new stone sits deeper into my old head so there is hardly any room to clean the very bottom of the pavilion and the culet and it irritates me when my ring is dirty...I would love just a quick and dirty way to get it clean rather than soaking it for 2 hours in windex and then scrubbing. I was pretty spoiled with the super exposed pavilion and culet when I had my other diamond.

Though for now I do use windex and a brush and sometimes a hot soak in water and then windex or a mixture. Works great...but it would be nice to drop it into something and have it come out just ready!

Deny, about sapphires and chemicals, I am not sure...I know windex, ammonias, alcohols do not hurt diamonds or platinum...but other stones and metals may be fair game.

probably the Salton is the way to go for you,since i already have an ultrasonic cleaner i bought the $99 steamer from Wink.

i guess there's not much you can do to avoid the water spots because once you use the restroom,oh well....
 
I clean my pink sapphire in both the ultrasonic cleaner and with the toothbrush and windex/ dish detergent and it comes out fine. Not sure about other gem stones..but sapphires are very hard and durable, they also need to be cleaned often because they attract lots of dirt and oils.

This is the reason that I cannot use the ammonia...I always find my finger itching afterwards regardless of how well I rinse of my rings! Since using the Salton Jewelry Spa, I don''t have the burning anymore!
 
i''ve been using a small toothbrush and vodka... or rubbing alcohol if the jewelery is super schmutzy. Sometimes I even let them soak for an hour. maybe overkill?
