What qualities do you look for in an MRB?

After having gone through a long search, owning non-super ideal MRBs and super ideal MRBs, I have one important take away. That often it isn't the vendor. I mentioned it in another thread. Turns out that my top two favorite MRBs were not super ideal although they were both AGS 000. I am still learning to trust my eyes and my gut. For me, that is what tells me what I truly favor, regardless of what the cert says. So regardless of vendor, what qualities of an MRB do you love and look for?

I have discovered I love seeing lots of scintillation from under the table. Sparkles around the crown are a given, but I want to see lots of life when I look into the diamond, top down.

I have a thing for fat arrows, so I tend to really love stones that are closer to 62% depth and smaller tables. Just something about the chunky arrows really appeals to me haha

From my experiences of having owned 4 superideal stones, my favourite cut-wise is the stone that I own now, with a low 34.x crown and a slightly bigger table 57.x. I believe that these characteristics attributes to the extra brightness of my current stone. The stone is always 'on' and rarely ever turns dark. Though I downgraded in diameter by 0.1mm from my previous stone, this stones looks bigger than the previous.

I'd prefer a stone with small table (54.5-55%) on a high crown (15.4 -15.7%) and 61.7-62% in depth but these kind of specs don't grow on trees.

Fat arrows, colors galore coming from within the stone, lots of flash and fire scintillation.

I always say trust your eyes over the numbers. Even for MRBs. And your mom's diamond is the perfect example of why this is true. Your eyes do not lie when they are experienced eyes such as yours @LLJsmom.

Yet.

On my AVR and OECs, of course I love small table and higher crown. But in a modern round or superideal cut, I like a bright, white stone, and that means probably 56-58 table. I discovered this when I bought a pendant stone with a small table and realized it was not best for a pendant. Those really need a larger table to be bright hanging on a chain. I think my studs have 56+ tables and those are fine. So I'd really have to review some stones in person again to decide on my ideal in terms of angles. Because my preference is definitely not the same in a modern round as it is in an AVR style cut. I also like a higher color in a modern round than an old style cut, as well. @LLJsmom I agree with you on desiring a lot of scintillation, but isn't your new diamond about as good as it can possibly be on scintillation? Which diamonds did you like best?

This thread is so helpful to someone like me, who is learning about the "numbers" for modern cuts and what makes for more fire/scintillation, etc. Currently, I have all old-cuts which I adore. That said, I'm also very curious about the "ideal" MRB cuts (as well as ECs, which is a topic for a different thread) and what makes them tick.

I’m also a newbie, I found that numbers are personal preference, gathered after seeing couple diamonds, found preference and then from the preference, we analyzed it and being scientifically measured with numbers. So what you read and what others preferred might be different with what you prefer, the only way to find out is seeing it ourselves =)2

My favorite stats combo:

61.2% - depth
56% - table
34.5 - crown
40.8 - pavilion angle
15% - crown %
75-76% - lower girdle %

To me, this is ideal balance. Also, when you find this combo, you almost always get nicely balanced arrows that never black out or disappear.

I've had ONE diamond with these exact stats. I showed it to David Klass and he said it was a perfectly cut stone and as beautiful as MRBs come. I agree: it was the most beautifully cut stone I've ever owned. Its light return was off the chain.

And just because this is an interesting aspect of it all....

It was a Blue Nile stone - cut in Sweden. So go figure.

Just to drive some long time pros nuts and a little tongue in cheek.
These have not been cut in years but they were the first super-ideals I hunted down to view in person. They were generally:
34c/55t/41p/80% lgf% /65% stars and cut extremely tight with tiny variations in both angle and %.
De Beers supplier of choice program cut off their rough and they went under years ago.

Wifey4vr's second ER stone was a recut by them to slightly different numbers shortly before they went under.

I'd prefer a stone with small table (54.5-55%) on a high crown (15.4 -15.7%) and 61.7-62% in depth but these kind of specs don't grow on trees.

Mine is pretty close except my table is too small, lol

It does have a lot of fire though

I cannot tell you how many time, when I open the microwave door, the sparkles from my diamond surprises me! That is what I look for in a diamond.

@LLJsmom Would you mind to share what’s the stats numbers on the E ACA that you’re keeping? Did you already share it somewhere? Sorry if I missed it....
