This is the setting for the chryso solitaire I want to do next. I don't know if it will be two tone yg/wg or if it will be all yg. Would probably do double prongs. At first I'd figured on doing a supernova since I love mine so much, and then it would be similar to the 3 stone I'm doing. But then a couple weeks ago I was on Dan's site looking at the pretties, and I kept stopping to look at the brilliant emerald cut stones. The way the colors look in the pictures to me, makes me think that a yellow chryso in that cut would be awfully pretty.

That made me 2nd guess doing an oval in that setting. I tried searching here to see if anyone had IRL pics of this cut but..the search function frustrates the bejeezus out of me. So, I thought I'd ask you guys what you thought about the 2 cuts and what would look best in the setting. Actually, what you think of the setting idea too..is it too open??

Michael doesn't have the chryso rough available right now. Barry has some that will cut ovals, and I'm not sure about Dan..he never actually gave me a yay or nay on it, tho he did give me a rough estimate on price so maybe that means he has some that would do a brilliant emerald. I'll check again to make sure.

I'm looking to do a big, bright, flashy ring. 8x6mm. Should I stick w/the supernova b/c I know I like it, or branch out?? Maybe the setting lends itself only to one shape rather than the other? I want another supernova and something in the brilliant emerald, regardless, so I'll do another project next year with whatever cut isn't chosen for this project.

Any thoughts? Thanks guys!

First stone. Can't help with chryso though.

I love the emerald shape. I have a chrysoberyl in a radiant emerald shape and it is very flashy.

I also recently discovered the brilliant emerald and I think it is gorgeous

I think you could go with either shape, but because there'd be more contrast with the straight-sided emerald, the fluid lines of the setting would stand out more. Also, those supernovas are fairly deep, so you'd probably have to alter the the setting somewhat. I guess I just gave two arguments for the emerald shape.

Thanks for the replies guys! :appl: I was leaning towards the brilliant emerald too, but needed extra opinions.

Kis-did you ever set that radiant emerald chryso? I can't remember!
Cell, that's what Uppy said too, about the curves of the setting and the straight lines of the emerald cut and I think you guys are right!

I'll go ahead and confirm w/Dan just to make sure.

Would you do two tone or all yellow gold? Or maybe it should be in a white metal? I'm kinda liking the idea of it being all yellow w/a yellow stone but maybe that's too much yellowness going on?

Nice setting! I feel that a rectangular cut complements the setting better because the rounded side of the oval will "spill" over the square basket. As for the metal, I can see it being two tone but personally, I prefer an all yellow gold setting.

Emerald!

I like the all yellow setting, as shown. I don't know how you're going to modify it for double prong though. Take a look at how the basket swoops up to beome the prongs holding the stone. I think the design requires just single prongs.

Ditto on the double prongs with Uppy. There's just not enough metal to split unless the prongs are beefed up which will mean the band has to be beefed up as well.

Gah, I never thought about that w/the prongs..I just was thinking w/the cut corners it needed double prongs for protection. Would it be ok like the setting is do you think?? Thanks for mentioning that Uppy/Chrono!

Freke m'lady where ya been?

if you don't mind sharing, where did you find this beautiful setting?

i forgot to vote :) Emerald!

Thanks Rparker! Um..I'm not sure where the setting picture is from. There was a thread here months and months ago that someone posted a link to the website I found this at, or posted a different pic from there, but for the life of me I can't remember which thread or what website it came from. I wish I could cuz there was some really cool stuff there..If I were smart, I would've named the pics w/the name of the vendor but alas..no such luck.

I vote for the emerald, and I like the idea of yellow gold but I'm one of the rare few who love yellow gold. My chryso is very yellow and it looks amazing with the yellow metal.

I've been sleeping...

Largosmom-thanks! Good job Super Sleuth!

Freke, wake up or I'ma come jump on the bed!

Kismet, I love it! Did you do a thread on it and I missed it?

I heard back from Dan and the piece he had that would work, he started cutting it only to find out it wasn't clean enough, so now I don't know if I should keep trying and check w/Peter and Gene or see if the setting could be reworked for oval or round or find a different setting entirely, and then just do the brilliant emerald and this setting w/a different stone later on down the road..amethyst or spinel or something maybe.

I could find a stone and have Michael do a recut but I'm kinda leery of doing that, first b/c I think it would end up being spendy, but then I think about the color changing possibilities.

Gah!

Patience, young grasshopper. Keep this setting in the back of your mind. It is too beautiful to waste on a "make it work" stone. When the perfect piece presents itself you'll know..... :ugeek:

You're very right Uppy! This is why I love you. :praise:

*clears throat* So..I also have an idea for a yellow round. Why do I have to like this stone so much? Seriously. "Hi, can I help you?" "Yeaaah..um, I'll take that yellow supernova chryo, supersize it please, and uh..the brilliant emerald chryso, yellow on that one too and gimme one of those round chryso happy meals-can you make it a chunky one please and..what the heck, throw in a marquise on the side, and that's it" "Ok thank you, please pull ahead" :cheeky:
