What should I do with this blue beryl?

My stepmother gave me piece from my late father’s collection to do with as I please. I’m not sure if I should try and set it, sell it, or just hang on to it? I know this stone is an “evening stone” and shouldn’t be in UV light/lighting…it’s such an unusual shape that it has me a little stumped to be honest. Anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?

@peppermintpatty one of my other stones that I have no clue what to do with =)2

It would make a striking pendant. The big size and fan shape would be perfect for this.

Thank you! Do you think just a simple setting or should I do any diamonds or colored stones around it?

Ooh, it looks like one of the mid century lighthouse prism cut gems. I would make a really cool pendant.

Just plain or get fancy with it?

There are many possibilities.

A simple white metal bezel-style frame would be fine. That's what I would go for. If you want to be more fancy, you could put a border of diamonds along the lower edge. If you want to be really OTT, you could dangle three diamonds (or other stones) from the lower edge, one in the middle and one at each corner.

Ohhh I do like the idea of the single row of diamonds r stones along the lower edge. I feel like since the point is cut off at the top I need to fill that space. The top seems to be throwing my eye off.

Hard! You could do an offset, or small halo for more daily wear

oooooooooor you could go nuts and get high house designer with it...

I think my stepmom said that I can only wear the stone in the evening as it will start to lose color if exposed to UV light? Soooo I’m wondering now if I go fancy-fancy!!! :kiss2:

Ooh, then high house it is! You could fashion one of those crazy elaborate collars with it! Pastel bonanza!

For fun, I was looking at Piaget thinking maybe they had some beryl...guess what, they do.

I found a Cartier with a similar stone shape

Can you imagine some ridiculously dripping confection, just so you could say ' Oh, this old thing?':love:

I don’t think I could hold my pinky up high enough to be able to wear either of these! But don’t count me out yet, the Powerball is tonight LOL. If I win…there will be signs…

It's an aqua, yes? Looks very Deco to me. You can re-cut the pavilion for more light return (is it a fantasy cut? -- can not get a good read on it) but I agree with @Starstruck8 and @ItsMainelyYou that it screams pendant to me. You certainly have plenty of carat-weight to work with! It's a beauty but the lack of light return takes some of the liveliness away and maybe introduces some gray.

Totally agree with the pendant suggestion. I think it'll look beautiful set that way. Do you want a more casual style or one for special occasions ? Here's two neat options I can see the stone in Screenshot_20230930-221925.png

Since it's from your late dad's collection, I wouldn't sell it. If you aren't ready to set it, just hang on to it for now.

Since it's best worn at night, I see it more as a special occasion piece. In which case I see it with diamonds. Lab diamonds I would think would help keep cost down. Since you might not be able to wear it too often I would want to keep my cost per wear down. I agree with the pendant recommendation, that would be stunning!

Before I can decide what I would do with the diamonds, I would love to know if you have a specific chain in mind for it?

I had to go back and look to see the stone being cut off at the top. A square cut diamond or gemstone would fill in that area nicely. Will you consider doing a recut? If you do, I would have the top cut to a point. I can see it set with a modern twist!

It is a unique shape, can you share the dimensions please? I love the color!

I’m not exactly sure other than my stepmom telling me they picked it up at a gem show years ago for around 4k. She just said it’s a blue beryl and that it was called an evening stone? I think it’s a fantasy cut of sorts - it’s actually quite hard to capture for an amateur like myself. I hadn’t thought of cutting it but I would be open to it! I do think pendant has to be the way to go 100%

That is a great question - I assume something more suited for special occasions. I can’t see myself wearing this often and definitely not during the day.

Well…that is a long story and actually something I posted about (unintentionally took a turn) on another post a couple of months back. The stone isn’t sentimental so much because I’m not sure my dad would have ever “given” me anything of value. My stepmom and I have become very close since his passing and so it has more meaning to me that she gave it to me <3

You bring up some excellent points about keeping the cost down, especially if I won’t be wearing it often. I think the consensus is most definitely pendant! Great minds…

I have zero idea of a chain in mind! I wouldn’t have even thought about considering that right now! Smart lady!

I would consider a recut! And I agree that a diamond where the missing point is would fit nicely. I’ve never recut a stone so that would be new territory for me!

I’ll have to grab the dimensions tomorrow because my husband snatched my calipers. It’s substantial though which is part of why I was so stumped :)

its a really beautiful colour

I love so many of the necklaces lala646 posted! The only thing I was thinking about last night and part of why I asked for dimensions is if you want to wear this with an open neck line you will want to watch the length of the pendant. That or the length of the chain. I have a chain or 2 that I know I would use for certain pendants. I'm just wondering if you do have a chain you love, would you want to make sure that your pendant goes with that chain. If not, everything is on the table so to speak with regard to the style of the pendant. I know it's more common to think of the chain after the pendant!

Yes, all of these pendants are giving me deco vibes too! I am in love with the black one!

I'm happy to hear that you and your stepmom are close and that it has special meaning coming from her.

Yeah, now I feel like I have to create more projects lol! I still have the other mint tourmaline in the works and a Mahenge garnet that I would love to set.

As far as the chains go I have none in mind but I also don’t wear a lot of white gold and I feel like this stone is best suited for white. That amethyst lined in diamonds sings to me!

Thank you, she is very special to me <3
