I''m noticing a number of posts saying that say certain shapes/styles will be outdated in a decade or so. What do you think? Personally, I see today''s styles to be a nice combination of classic, but with a nice touch of originality to them. I also wonder what the average size diamond will be in ten years? Engagement rings seem to be getting huger by the second! What do you all think?

Personally, I think that most shapes will still be around, but I think that platinum and pave will probably what people will look back and see as the big trend of 2005. I can see both going the way of yellow gold and channel set (which were both the hot ticket not so many years ago). I'm sure there will still be a market for anything, but really specific styles don't tend to stay in vougue forever. Some designer will come up with something different, and everyone will want the latest.

I do think that simple, classic styles like 4 and 6 prong solitaires and eternity bands will be around for a very long time, because they never really go "out of style" and they are easily assimilated into whatever is going on in fashion at any given moment. I can see that maybe two-tone yellow and white gold might start becoming more popular in the future.

As far as stone size? Anyone's guess! A lot of that will depend on the economy I would think. I honestly can't see the typical engagement ring continuing to keep getting bigger and bigger, though. It seems hard to think that 10 years down the road, the average Ering could be 5 and 6 carat whoppers!

I''ve heard that diamonds will be out, and that colored gemstones will be in. I don''t know if that''s true, but I know I read it in a Newsweek or something. Now, as for the average diamond getting bigger, I''m not sure. I know that, for me personally, I would not want a 5 carat stone. It''s just too much on my finger. But, if it were an engagement pendant....

I think that since the x-prong settings have been so popular the last few years that you will be able to look at someone with that type of setting and figure out when they got engaged.

Princess cuts seems to be popular the last few years as well. They may not necessarily scream 2005, but late 90''s/early 00''s at least.

It does seem like solitaires are making more of a comeback, at least what I have seen.

Most of my friends got engaged late 90''s/early 00''s. Several got the channel set round type e-rings w/matching wedding bands, but have you noticed that that is what most of the maul stores still show?

i think the halo look with pretty much any shape center stone is hot this year. the halo''s are in all the bride magazines along with rings covered in pave.

I think the halo is the trendy look and I''m not sure of it''s longevity.

Don''t hate me for saying this but I think when the setting is a halo the person is trying to "cheat" a little to make the center diamond look bigger than it really is.

That''s why I wear all black tanuki...trying to cheat and make myself look a little smaller LOLOL!!! :)
I think the halo is very trendy but very pretty and I don''t think it will go out of style...
I think that for the most part, a diamond is a diamond and that shapes or most designs don''t really go "out"

don''t you live in the land of the GIANT ROCKS where 5 ct is very common?

I sure do! But, it just doesn''t suit me. So, I''m going for a 3.22 ct e-ring and 1.25 ct w-band so I''m closer to 5 cts on one hand without looking like I''m playing dress up

I agree with this. I think that the princess is going to be dated in the future. I love the cut, don''t get me wrong.... But that is just my opinion.

I am thinking that soon people are going to start taking more interest in the older cuts.

i think rb''s with classic prong setting will never go out of style, the choice of metal color now it''s white.....they just go around in cycles like bell bottom pants it''s making a come back soon.

I would LOVE for princesses to go out of style! I prefer the cut myself, so if I could get them for less all the better!!!

No way the princess is going "out" of style. It's sharp and elegant and classic. Not like so many of these other cuts...every day there's a new square H&A that tops all the others LOL.... The princess is truly a classic!!!

I agree princess cuts are here to stay. They are a new classic in my book. And an elegant one!!

I''ll buy ya one when they are ''out" Mine LOL.... I do understand how there are surges of popularity...like now it''s definitely the cushion...but the princess is a modern classic imo

You got it MMM....

How long have certain cuts been popular?
Anyone know?

Also asschers are very popular now and have been a classic from day one. I doubt they will ever go out of style.

I said it in my first post...I don''t see any particular shapes really going out of style. If anything, I bet there will be even more new shapes and cuts in the future. The basic shapes, though, will always be popular...like the round, princess, emerald, pear, oval, and marquise. If you think about it, most of the other "shapes" are just variations on those shapes anyway.

What I do see changing though are the styles. Some of the styles right now that are so popular (like the halo''s and the platinum with all the pave) harken back to some of the styles that were popular back when our grandmothers (and in some cases great-grandmothers) got their engagement rings. I think many of the newer styles are just modern versions of old classics. The halo settings especially remind me of a lot of the art deco stuff from the early 20th century.

I think a well cut diamond in any shape will always be "in." Some shapes go through popularity phases--look at the asscher--but they are all here to stay.

Setting styles are far more apt to follow trends, IMO, but there again, everything "new" is old again and then new again....That''s why I always say get what you like--yellow gold, whhite metal, whatever, becasue even if it''s "out," in 5 years, it''ll be "in" again anyway!

PS The only exception to this is the Octagon diamond--saw one--no way!

i honestly don't see anything screaming '2005'...more like the 80's or 90's or 00's....rather......more like a decade 'look' than one year at a time. aka i dont know what 2004 was or 2003. i got my eternity style setting in 2002 and it defintitely is more popular now.

things like the pave platinum and halos to me are classic and timeless because they were around in the early 1900's...so for me that's like reliving fun vintage...! i see the solitaires as more of a modern classic but the pave settings to me are old-school--just coming back around again.

for me some stuff will just never be IN again...aka 80's thick chunk gold channel settings and the like....but maybe that's just because it's not my style...so i think what's in or out also is dependent on your personal style...and how well you wear the item, whatever year it is!

oh and stones..i don't see those as out or in since everyone's taste is so personal!

I can''t think of a particular clothing or style that is so "90''s" or "00''s." I think the 60''s, 70''s, and 80''s have definite styles, but it seems to be more blended now, more sophisticated and timeless. Who knows, maybe in 20 years I''ll look back and say, "That is SO 2000," but right now, it seems style, be it clothes or jewelry, has stayed fairly consistant for the last 10 years. Does anybody else feel this way?

I agree princess cuts are here to stay.even as we speak, they might be more popular than RB ''s and with the new AGS princess cut grade comming out,i think it will push the popularity to new heights. JMO

The halo and the "boxter" are definately "2005" looks...however they are ring styles of the past coming back! I think they are classics that have made their way back and are now trendy.

Reb...early 90''s was the grunge, "heroin chic" look ( think Kate Moss), also the Jennifer Aniston hair do'' was very mid 90''s

So what was the decerning Heroin Chic wearing on her left ring finger tho... hmm what was Coutrney Love wearing i wonder....

I''m sure whatever anyone is wearing will not scream SOOO 2005 in 10 years.

There really isn''t anything new under the sun. Styles come and go. And, I think it relates to your timeframe of growing up. Some styles popular today are sooooooo 1970.
It''s no secret that halo settings and pave are popular now. They will probably be viewed as very 2000+ in about 10 years. Then another few years will pass & no one will remember what decade/year they were soooooooo of. Put on another couple of years, whatever was soooo that year will be back in fashion again and regarded as classic. Truth be, most styles mentioned are decades old and will stand the test of time. Channel, collet (which is probably the MOST classic if looking at longevity), bezel, catherdral, pave, etc are nothing new under the sun & each have shared popularity of time. Channel was VERY popular in the 1940''s and you see it in victorian pieces.

And, it depends what one classifies as "classic". For jewelry, working in platinym is a relative new fangled idea. If I recall correctly, it had something to do with the invention of a torch that was able to work the platinum (first part of the 20c?).

At the end of the day, wear what you like. If gold looks better on you, wear gold. Me, silver looks better with my dark hair and fairer skin. Though my last setting is in plat, I don''t think I''d go that route again. I simply like gold rings for no other reason than I just like them.

As far as stone shape, I think certain time periods have more popular shapes than others. Squares are very popular today. Marquise were the rage in the late 70''s early 80''s.

Also, one has to look to the history of the time to explain some styles. Cluster rings w/ lots of small stones were popular in the very late 70''s/early 80''s because of the crazy price jump of diamonds.

If one is concerned about being in or out, then a round brilliant in a simple tiffany style will always be classic. You can''t really date that in most recent history.

Ring design styles tend to be more classic than clothing (more disposable). I wear what is most comfortable. I like very flush to the hand rings. Even my orginal e-ring was set fairly low.

Oh, and just for MMM - did you ever buy into "brown" being the next black.

Me neither.

Why won''t they stop trying to coax off the black for another yet hip color?
