I thought the dog thread was great, but didn''t want to hijack it with my smart felines! So here''s to the kitty cats! What words does your kitty know?

Mine know:

Play
Mousie
Toy
Feather
Hungry
Eat
Treat
Greenies
Cut your nails
Bedtime
NO
Stop It!
No bite
OWWW!!!
medicine
work
"It''s ok, you can come out now!"
Ear (only Lucy because she has ear infections)
Go away!
Come here!
Max
Bill
Lucy (If I say Lucy, i get all 3 cats. It''s much more efficient thanks to their jealousy)
Billy
LuLu (Lucy)
Squeaker (Lucy, she squeaks instead of meows)
Tigger (Lucy again)
SnuggleBuggle (Max)
Squish (As in "I''m going to squish you" which means hug)
Kisses (they put their heads out to be kissed before I leave)
trip (as in we''re going on a trip)

They also recognize certain sounds...
Max will run into the kitchen if he hears a can opener even though I''ve never fed him food that required the use of a can opener in the 6 years he''s lived with me... it must have been his first owners. Max can also hear a litter box being scooped from anywhere in the house and likes to be the first one to use it once we''ve scooped.

My alarm clock means breakfast, but only my alarm clock, even though M usually feeds them in the morning. The first time I speak in the morning, Bill runs up the stairs screaming "MROOWWWW! MROOWWW!! MROWW!" he likes to say hello and get petted before breakfast. They also know the sound of both of our car horns honking when we lock the car and they appear in the window or at the door when they hear it. I''ve been home and watched them differentiate between honks... it''s really cool. The appearance of Lucy''s pill cutter means "treat" because she gets her pills in Pill Pockets (cat treats designed to hold pills).

Those are my smart kitties. What do yours know?

I guess because we have one dog and one cat I don''t spend the same amount of time on those things with the cat because he can''t be asked or coaxed to do anything. But we do tell the dog to "get the kitty" which means wrestle/play - it never stops being one of the most hysterical things in life to watch. So when we tell the dog to "get the kitty" the cat gets all big haired and in stalker mode - prepared to do battle. Then they both stand on their hind legs, wrap their arms in a hug and try to pull the other down like thumb wrestling. They pounce on each other''s backs, bite the back leg, wrap the mouth around the other''s neck, gallop low to the ground trying to smear the other across the floor, and just generally rolling around wrestling. We have several videos.

Hah! That made me laugh out loud!

Our kitty is, of course, "wicked smart" -- he is a Boston boy after all!

As for words, he knows:

Monkey (his "proper" name)
Magoo, Magoober (his nicknames)
Hungry??
Whozagoodboy?? (He usually rolls onto his back for a belly rub at that.)

Umm, not sure how many other words he knows!

Sounds, on the other hand, he definitely knows!

The sound of the TV clicking in makes him run from any room to the living room! It''s a riot! If it were a cartoon, he''d have those squealy noises when he turns the corners
1.gif

When the TV shuts off at night, he runs to the fridge b/c he knows it''s wet food time!

The sound of us opening the jar with his dry food in it.

The sound of the screen door opening b/c he knows he gets to go outside!

Strangely enough, he can tell the noises of our keys apart from the noise of other people''s keys when we enter the front door of the building - our apt. is near the front door, and if I''m home and fiance isn''t, Monkey totally knows when it''s "Daddy" opening the front door as compared to anyone else (same if fiance is home and I''m not - Monkey knows the sound of Momma''s keys!)! Bizarre!

He is also a HUGE Daddy''s boy and loves to play really wild with his Daddy, and he definitely lets us know when it''s playtime!! He''s a really vocal guy too, and he says "Heeeellloooooooo?!" when he wants to get our attention -- swear to God

Sumbride, my beloved kitty Jasmine who passed away Jan. 05 used to jump on the bed whenever she heard me get her pill bottle (she was on steroids) because she knew that after the pill came treats! It was the BEST thing -- she was so easygoing about taking meds, which most cats hate!

Sammy knows:
No - she minds very, very well, particularly for a cat!
Off/Down
Up
Sammy
Baby Girl
Food (runs to the kitchen)
Pills (runs and hides)
Good Girl

She also understands hand signals, slowly pointing down means "Down". Patting my lap means "Up".

She also knows the sound of our coffee table cabinet being opened, but since we keep both treats, brushes (yay!), and toenail clippers (boo!) in there, she doesn''t know what to expect!

Our alarm clock means breakfast, but she knows not to start meowing at the door until she hears us up and about.

The sound of the water sprayer shaking means get off the table or I''m going to get wet!

When she was alive, Katie knew her name and "cheese". She had a sixth-sense about cheese - if you thought about getting cheese out of the fridge, she was at your feet begging for it! Also "Kitty kitty" "Pretty kitty" "Katie cat" "Pretty girl" "Want some food?" "Good girl" and "Up", meaning sit up and beg for food. When she was younger, she could catch food that you threw to her and eat it before her front paws touched the ground again! I miss her.

Cats understand every single word you say!

Whether they choose to respond is another matter!

Our cat actually answers back...especially when she's told it's bedtime!

We are just starting to learn 'tortie' speak

All PS cat owners will know how intuitive and intelligent our feline companions are!

Hmmm...I am not sure they know "words" so much as tone of voice. The also know the sound of FI''s and my voice which I think is so cute. They know their names and usually come when they are called. They know the sound of "pounce" being shaken and come running no matter WHERE they are. Also kitchen noises, pantry door opening. Front door opening...that kind of thing.

HAHAHA I totally relate to this!!!! I swear my cat is part human sometimes cuz he''s just so freakin'' smart.
He knows phrases, words, facial expressions, hand guestures, etc...

My cat goes by Barron or Mr Barron and he knows his own name well...comes to you whenever you say that
I also call him kittykitty and when he''s being a brat I call him "turd" LOL

Everyday when I come home I hafta say "how''s my baby" or "hi my baby" when I greet him at the door and he''ll make kitty noises back to me or he''ll bother me until I pay him some attention.

He''ll come if I ask him "Come here" or do the hand gesture for come here...I can even look into his eyes and nod towards myself and he''ll come...
Or if I pat the chair or my lap, he knows it means hop up on there...
He knows when anyone in the house is home just by the sound of their car engine! (and there''s 4 of us!)
He''ll be at the front door waiting for whoever comes in, and if no one walks in he gets very upset and starts meowing and looking out the balcony door (We live in a condo complex so how he knows car engines, I have no idea...there''s like 019459327593284902 cars going in and out everyday....)
He knows things like:
What you doin''? (he''ll look at me like "who me?" and make kitty noises)
GET OFF! (when he''s climbing on things he shouldn''t) (or GET DOWN!)
Want some food?
Want some water?
Treat!
Get your toy!
Where''s your toy?
Go get daddy (he''ll go climb all over my bf if he''s laying on couch when I say that)
Get your butt in here! (he likes to walk out the front door into the hallway or onto the balcony when I''m not paying attention!)
BE NICE! (when he''s being mean to my roommates pets that visit sometimes)
Nite Nite time!

uhh...I know he knows more but that''s all I can think of right now.

My cat knows when my alarm goes off in the morning that means I''m awake and he starts meowing for me to open my bedroom door for him (if he gets shut out during the night)
And when I pull out the catbrush- he knows what it means and he LOVES it...he wants to rub all over the brush by himself...I rarely even hafta do the work LOL

Anytime you talk to my cat he basically talks back with mewing or meowing or other cat noises. Also, when he gets in trouble he "talks back"...LOL it''s sooo hilarious when my roommate yells at him for something and he just meows back like "yooou be quiet"...

Okay I better stop myself....I could go on all day about my son LoL

GREAT thread!

Your cats all have such great personalities! I do agree that most cats know everything you''re saying and just choose whether or not to respond, but my cats definitely have keywords!

I realized, while reading this, that my cats aren''t big on "DOWN!" We literally have to walk over to them and remove them from tables, counters, etc... they just do what they what they want to do and don''t really respect our wishes to not have them do it.

VERY FUNNY BLOD- cats understand but choose not to respond LOL...!!!!

Well, Scotty know "You want food? You want food?"
Vinny knows (in a low voice....VIIINNNNNCCEEENNNTTTT) and NO! and "Get the Feather"
Gracie knows "Stringie"

They all know their names...

But I wonder if it's more of the tone of what you say than the words?

moremoremore, howdya like it? howdya like it?

I''m ruined for the afternoon. Stucksville.

LMAO! Now I am too!

Rascal knows:

His name and several nicknames
Toy
Flip (a particular toy he loves)
Food/Dinner Time
NO
Vet
Cage
Treats
Up
Down

And plenty of sounds too

Hmmm. my cat is REALLY dumb.. I LOVE her.. but she''s an idiot..

She knows her name..
She MIGHT understand "food" and "turkey" (turkey is her FAVORITE)
I can''t tell if she really knows "come here" or not.. its basically a 50 50 shot as to whether she comes..
SHe does know the tone of voice that means she is in trouble though. :)

When my cat, Willow, hears me say anything with the word Alley (my other cat), hear ears perk up, her eyes get big and she knows that she better run and hide, or Alley will attempt to beat her up

I don''t think My cat knows any words other than "Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!" He pretty much just repsonds to select sounds like the door opening, snapping fingers, rustling of the food bag, and flushing toilets. But then again, my cat isn''t less intelligent than average, which is probably why he''s so sweet.

I kind of have that situation too... after a year together, Lucy and Bill just DO NOT like each other... so if I call Bill, Lucy sort of hides, and if I call Lucy, Bill sees it as a chance to attack her.

If I say Lucy around Max though, he wants to know just what it is she''s about to get because he wants some too! Be it petting, treats, or medicine! He might be missing out on something!!!

HAHA! :) Good job creating a cat post too.

Ours knows his name, "Cringer", and "Down", and always knows the sound of a can on the countertop; he''ll come running, hoping for some wet food.

I don''t know about other words, but we definelty have a conversation everyday when I come home. I''ll ask how his day was, what he did, if he had a good nap, and he''ll respond with various meows and chatter. This will go on for several minutes as he follows me around. Very social for a cat.

My cat can say "meow" great, but other than that, she doesn''t know anything else. I tried to teach her to say "mama'', but she just kept saying "meow", so it was pointless.....

sounds like your cat has rich tastes!

Lucy knows the word "chicken" because we always say "Lucy LOOOOVEEESSSS CHICKEN" everytime she attempts to get too close to our plates at dinner.

yeah if we are eating any of those we have to lock her in the bedroom. or she is on the table and in our plate. she knows she will get a taste when we are finished. especially ham and popeye''s chicken.

HA! That last post was so true. :)

besides her name, mine will respond to:
pounce (these are kitty treats that she LOVES)
cosmic (brand of catnip that she sort of eats/snorts and then spends an hour rolling in..)
