Hi everyone, and welcome to my first post. I have been doing some of the research we all do before buying our first diamond and I find all of the info mindboggling!!

Basically I need some help and reassurance. I am looking at buying a diamond engagement ring from a private party whose engagement unfortunately came to an end. The ring was worn for a couple months, and it can be resized and made to look new by the designing jeweler. I will include all of the info I have about the diamond here so you can let me know the quality and value of the stone. I have an appraisal, but it is for replacement cost in a retail market.

What percentage discount is usually paid for "used" diamonds? What discount for "used" settings? Remember, I am COMPLETELY NEW and very anxious about this purchase.

I will post the appraisal after I get some feedback (I don''t want the appraised figures to influence you guys).

A GREAT BIG THANKS in advance for your input!!!

When I made my original post, the site would NOT allow me to add any kind of link to a photobucket album with the pics of the diamond.

How do I get pics on here, or even better, a link to the pics????????????

FRUSTRATING!!!

You have to attach the picture to your post from your HD. It's the "insert image" icon, with the mountain and the sun.

Looks gorgeous? Is it an ACA from WF?

jkhorseman,

In the picture, a couple of the lines surrounding the arrows look slightly angled. (it might be how they took the picture)

Do you have any more information? Maybe a size and the GIA certificate #? We can go to the GIA website and look at the specs with those two things.

WF expert selection

Very nice looking diamond -the photo looks like the type of pic Whiteflash takes. With that particular AGS report I would venture probably an expert selection line?
Great looking Idealscope and ASET.
You can use the 'pricescope your diamond' feature at the top of the page to get an idea of what the stones are going for if you purchased new from a dealer. I would look at comparable AGS and GIA reports to compare (the EGL would be a difficult yardstick in this case). Looks like maybe about 8k new ('course that is present day pricing, not the pricing that he/she paid back when purchased which would have been lower than now). You and your friend would have to decide what you felt was a reasonable 'discount' for you taking it off his/her hands. If they tried to sell it to a dealer they wouldn't get half of what they paid, so it is in their best interest to sell it privately.

ETA: Oh wow, the thread was only down to the IS pic when I started posting!

Depends how much you want it. Mark Morrell offers to list for resale his pieces, and WF has a 70% buyback, and the ring looks very desirable (PS is not the only place where WF or MM have a following)...I do not think it would be too difficult for the owner to sell it.

Hi JK! Well, your subject line was "What would you pay for this??" so I am going to tell you my personal opinion:

I would pay about $5000 - $6000. Again, I reiterate, that is just my personal opinion.

It is a very pretty diamond and a pretty setting, but I think rings are kind of like cars, they lose a lot of value as soon as you drive them off the lot. I do feel some sympathy for the seller, but think this is more than he would get elsewhere. Many people will not buy a "used" engagement ring no matter how great the condition b/c they are superstitious, so I don''t think it will be super easy for this to sell.

Also, I wouldn''t want to pay up for certain features that I don''t prize. For example, your report indicated that this is a colorless diamond, which may have been really important to the original purchaser, but it is less so to me, so I''m not inclined to pay a premium for it.

There are a LOT of diamonds in this size and color and clarity. The cut is a little harder to come by, but just searching on Pricescope for round brilliants 1.2 - 1.21 ct, D-E color, SI1 clarity, you get 82 matches, starting at $6847 up to $10,062. You can put in the stats and see how various of these compare to yours. That is a pretty narrow search - if you open it up to say, 1.18 ct - 1.30 ct you get hundreds more to sift through.

I don''t know generally what the %age discount is on pre-owned engagement rings, but a former colleague of mine tried to sell one when he and his fiancee broke up. The jewelers on 47th St. offered him less than 1/2 what he had paid. He ended up listing it idonowidont - a website dedicated to selling wedding stuff (engagement rings, dresses, etc.) when they get cancelled and got about 70% what he paid.

Oh, and one more thing - that setting is very, very pretty. But....my advice is to just buy the diamond, not the setting. Or, if you have to buy the setting, take out the diamond, reset it in a "new" setting, and save this one for later.

I think as a woman, I would be fine with you getting the stone privately from a broken engagement, but I would want YOU, my fiance, to pick a new setting that would have special meaning for us.

I guess this could be seen as a little superstitious. I don''t think it is. Anyone else feel the same way? Or the opposite way?

PLUS, JK, with the original setting, you can hold on to it and in a few years, get a pretty colored stone put in it (what''s her birthstone or favorite color? Many colored stones are gorgeous and NOT expensive - you can get something stunning for a few hundred dollars.)

Anyway, good luck!

i remember this ring from somewhere

i would buy this stone if the price was right, but i don''t need the setting.

Wow, gorgeous ring. It''s a PSers ring, I remember the guy posting pics around Christmas time (?!) then a few months later the engagement was off. How sad.

But good for you, I guess. That stone is gorgeous and the setting divine. Do a search around here in Show Me The Ring, around December, you will be able to find out how much it was worth then, that might help you decide.

I think that stone would have been around the $10k mark back then, I purchased in Jan, and I think I remember seeing a 1ct D SI1 ACA for around that price, so you could estimate the cost of an ES stone and the setting be around the $2 mark? My maths is pretty bad so bear with me

Total $10-12k?

I think you couldn''t expect more than 50% on a second hand ring, so I would offer around $5k personally.

The owner has been trying to find a buyer for at least 6 months or more. I can''t figure out why he doesn''t put it on consignment at Pearlman''s.

the seller is asking what, $8000ish if I recall correctly? I considered his ring for about 10 seconds before realizing that I didn't want my girl wearing a ring that had been on any other finger. she's the same size as the one you found.

my petite torchiere, AGS0/1.06/J/SI1, size 6.25, roughly $7200 total, brand new:

Top Secret... A little off topic...

I''m debating between the Torchiere and the Flame for a 1ct stone. Do you have hand pics of your fiance''s lovely ring. Thanks.

bee - not yet but i''ll get some soon... gimme a few days.

either ring will be a good choice. pay close attention to the ring body; it basically depends if you like the body with a taper or with a knife edge.

Beautiful....... Thanks TopSecret! It''s a tough choice between the flame and torchiere; however you can go wrong with a Mark Morrell.

Gorgeous!!!

Stupid question but I still can''t tell after looking at the various pics online. What''s the difference in the body between the petite sunburst and torchiere? What does knife edge mean? Beautiful rings in this thread btw.

Does anyone know if this ring is still for sale? We are very interested in it. Is it possible to contact the seller privately here?
