What would you wear to be on TV?

This may seem like a bit of a random question, but I am going to be interviewed this week in a news broadcasting studio as part of a feature being made on a project I've been working on for the past year. I have NO idea what to wear, and was hoping you ladies could help inspire me!

I want to look professional, but current... I know I should avoid stripes and busy prints because they never look great on camera, but other than that I am a bit lost :loopy: !

If you were being interviewed for a documentary type feature, what would YOU wear?

Solid colours or a big, bold print.

Fitted clothes, definitely - not tight, but well tailored clothes that fit close to your body.

A fun accessory - bright scarf, bubble necklace, cuff bracelet, something like that.

Layers!

Don't get too bogged down in feeling like you need a matching suit - a basic black suit is great in person, but you will read as a black blob on screen.

Hope that helps!

I'd look to Michelle Obama for inspiration! I love her dress/cardigan combos. She looks professional without looking stuffy in a boxy power suit.

Great suggestions, ladies!! Thank you :)

How fun! It will be a neat experience.

Will it be filmed in HD? I do makeup for a living so those in my craft have learned to adjust for HD as needed. Reds and pinks read VERY red and pink on HD and any shimmer will look like sweat, so avoids those makeup-wise if possible.

I agree with what others say about not wearing prints. Warmer, neutral colors look best but any solids will do.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

Oooh, thanks for the tips RebeccaMUA!!!! I had no idea. I'll be chatting with the producer today about what to expect, so I'll be sure to ask and plan accordingly. I'm usually a bit of a control freak, so not knowing how it will turn out and having no control over the editing is so scary!!

I'll be sure to let you guys know how it goes. Thanks again for the help!!

OH HOW EXCITING! I agree with using Michelle Obama's outfits as inspiration. She isn't a small girl and she looks absolutely stunning in photographs and online! She really knows how to dress to whittle the middle, and bring out the best of a woman's assets! She always looks professional without looking like she's in court.

and good advice, Rebecca! I'm sorry to semi thread jack but.. what kind of foundation do you recommend to use in front of the camera? I know no SPF, no mineral, no mica.. what else? I have a couple's photoshoot (not engagement but it might just be used for the STD's since I don't want to do the actual engagement shoot until it's closer to wedding time) in September and would love your input! =) I know Star_Sparkle's having a photoshoot too, and I'm sure we'd both love whatever advice you can spare! I hear makeup "fades" on camera, so go dramatic??

You are more than welcome petit-bijou! I hope it goes very well :)

And Madelise, you are absolutely right. No mineral makeup (bare minerals, pur minerals, etc.) nothing with a chemical SPF, nothing with mica as one of the first three ingredients, and preferably no shimmer (unless you are absolutely sure there will be no flash used).

And if possible, I think false eyelashes always look great on film. They really make the eyes pop, even if you don't wear a ton of eye makeup :)

ETA and yes I would definitely use a heavier hand with the makeup. If you will be outside, the sun will sort of "blow out" the picture and make the makeup look lighter and if you use a flash, it will do basically the same thing. It doesn't necessarily be "dramatic" but lets say add depth to the colors that you are using ( a deeper shade of brown/eggplant/whatever on the eyes, a slightly deeper shade of lips.)

I second this!! spanx is for every body style , it just makes me feel more comfortable when wearing tight dresses or if its one of those days i had a little too much salt the night before.

Haha, thanks madelise for remembering my engagement shoot (it's tomorrow!!)!

And thanks to Rebecca for the tips! I'm still a little unsure what to do, but I'll be doing it for myself so I guess I'll just have to wing it. I don't want to do anything too crazy because obviously I still want to look like myself and not overly made-up, but I don't want to end up looking blah on camera. Would you recommend bronzer? Our photos will be outside with no flash, if that makes a difference.

(Sorry for the threadjack!!)

Hi Star Sparkle,
Bronzer is fine as long as it's matte (a good, cheaper, alternative is the NYX matte bronzer) so the mica doesn't reflect in the sunlight

Looking forward to hearing how it goes, and what you decided to wear!

Also appreciate hearing make up ideas for on camera, I have stored the information away for later. By the sounds of things my usual routine would be the worst thing I could do!

So much helpful info here!! Unfortunately I wasn't able to adhere to the amazing make-up advice as much as I would've liked, as I've been living out of a travel size suitcase lately traveling around to conferences, weddings, etc. and didn't have a chance to make it home to access my "full arsenal" before the interview.

In the end, the producer wanted a fairly low-key look, so I wore a white V-neck t-shirt, grey blazer, and a fairly substantial blue beaded necklace. Makeup was fairly minimal, but true to my usual style, so we'll have to wait and see how it goes. The interview will form a small part of a feature that is being done on a project I've been a part of, so it should be fun to see how it all comes together once it eventually airs!

Hope everyone else's photoshoots went well :D

Sounds good! I'm glad you figured things out!
