To a Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil themed party? It will indeed take place in a garden, and starts at 8 p.m.

We watched the movie last night since we really had no idea what this theme was all about. There are two parties in the movie -- one is an informal raucous party, and one is a high society black-tie party.

Oh yes, and there will be a transvestite who's been hired to perform.

We've sort of been invited by friends of friends so I don't have anyone to ask what they're wearing (plus all the people we know who are going are men). The dress I would want to wear is what I was wearing the only other time I met the people we will be seeing, so obviously that's out. Any suggestions?

What about jewelry? Pearls to play up the high society aspect?

I feel a little stress because DH's association with these new friends is also work related, and I want to help give him the right image and not be the dowdy wrongly-dressed wife.

Wear a Little Black dress. You can''t go wrong.

Scintillating...

pearls I think would be a bit to prim for evening.

I say break out the costume jewelry.

Ditto. And maybe some nice Rhinestone jewelry?

Don''t forget the leash and harness for the invisible dog.

Thanks for all of the advice. I actually went out and got a new dress, but it is a cute little black dress.

Definitely no pearls -- that was when I was wondering if I was supposed to dress more like it was a garden tea -- I''m from NJ so I don''t always get the etiquette down here in the South.

Should be fun! Oh, and the transvestite is actually the one from the movie and the book (the real life person played herself [himself?] in the movie). At one point I was trying on this rather loud dress that wasn''t like me at all, and I could just imagine Miss Chablis coming over and commenting on it at the party, so I decided that was a no.

i would dress your huuby as a drag queen and I would go as the voodoo lady.

Oh my, that was some party.

Can you beat when the four bartenders suddenly all take off their shirts to be dressed like chippendales and bare their nipple rings? And Lady Chablis was a hoot.

I''m just hoping I didn''t do anything too embarrassing because the end of the night is something of a blur. It''s not good news when you wake up with a bucket next to you. I do have a vague recolllection of ordering DH to get it for me. Hopefully he''ll wake up soon and get me a greasy sausage biscuit for breakfast.

There was quite a range of dress, so I obviously wasn''t the only person wondering. The black dress was a great suggestion, although this other lady kept saying over and over how she had tried the same dress on that day. I did see one or two strange outfits that appeared to be attempts to dress up like the voodoo lady.

My only complaint is that Lady Chablis is skinnier than I am . . .

Keep in mind that this was the aforementioned end of the night . . .

What a fun idea for a party!! Sounds like you had a good time. I loved the movie and the book. We were in Savannah last year and the book is everywhere you go so picked it up. I really enjoyed it a lot after seeing Savannah.

What was Lady Chablis like? Was she nice?

SO, HOW''S THE HANGOVER?!

Oh, I''m too late. I was going to say to get a couple of plates and go as the statue on the cover.

this response is too late but i remember the book having descriptions of what people were wearing. this is THE SOUTH and i always think of big brimmed hats when i think of THE SOUTH.

It was NOT pleasant. I don''t know how I was able to upload the picture and all in the morning because I spent the rest of the day immobilized on the couch swimming in a sea of nausea, headache, and regret. I couldn''t even eat the sausage biscuit DH brought me. I did notice at the end of the night that the stripper/bartender appeared to be making a drink that was about three shots of gin and a little splash of tonic, but at that point I was too far gone to realize I shouldn''t drink it.

Yes, there was a big brimmed hat or two, but there were also people in shorts, so I felt comfortable somewhere in the middle.

Looks like a riot!
